If someone here a whistle they won't come running thinking there is an emergency. I was only on TH-cam searching to find out what key chain alarms sound like because I heard and alarm in a parking lot just now. If I here an alarm I stop and think " should I report it?" If I here a whistle I smile and assume there's kids playing nearby

This is a very helpful comparison and my conclusion is that it would be sensible to have both and count on them under different conditions.
I can tell that the sound coming through the recording is not the full sound that comes across in person. I have what appears to be the same whistle. A good friend gave it to me to keep me safe, but my dog freaks out when she hears it and she runs away! She was lying right beside me while I watched this video, and I wondered how badly she would react to hearing it over the computer. She didn't even flicker an ear! That tells me that the terrible awful sound the whistle actually makes has been filtered out by the recording.
    :)

Andi Whitaker The dog test sounds like it is very decisive. I think you're right that both the alarm and the whistle have different strengths and would work best under different conditions. Thanks for watching :-)

Thanks for the review! We just shared it on the Vigilant Personal Protection Systems facebook page.

Very good info; thank you Peace. I read the other comments and some good points were made. I believe the alarm is a very good thing to have for some of the stated reasons and I will add: if you were injured in a way that impaired your breathing and couldn't use your phone for whatever reason, the alarm could save your life.

I used my personal alarm in the entrance to Rite Aid where they store their carts. I was putting my purchases in my backpack to carry home. I heard a voice behind me say "Give me $20." I turned around a saw a homeless looking big guy. I pressed the alarm hanging from my fanny pack and turned my back to him. (Not a good idea I realized later) He ran away towards a waiting pick up truck that sped away without him. He was never caught but I was fine. I would never have had time to get my whistle to my lips. I also carry my whistle on my keys. My keys were in my fanny pack. I just have to reach down to set off my alarm. I won't leave home without it.

beahaven Thanks for that story. It really brings home the importance of these kinds of things.

I used to carry my whistle in a small pouch on the strap of my bag, but I realised it took me too long to retrieve it -- whenever I needed to call someone's attention, it was easier and faster to just keep shouting that person's name until s/he heard it.
Then I got myself a medical ID tag -- I still have to make an ICE card -- and it came with a neck chain. I've managed to get a small key ring and now I carry my whistle on the neck chain. It's much easier to reach and it's closer to my mouth. It's also always with me, so there's no problem if I can't reach my bag -- as was the case before.

WalterWorld·Vlog Good idea. Whistles are great but not always accessible when needed. A neck chain would help.

Do people in the city often ignore alarms? In parking lots, car alarms seem to go off for no reason and it seems like people no longer respond.

Prepper Potpourri Yeah, I think since car alarms go off so frequently, alarms aren't as effective as they once were. They are just another tool which could be helpful depending on where you are, what is around and what is happening. I wouldn't rely on them exclusively.
beahaven shared a situation when she used her personal alarm in the comments. I also think they could be very effective, if I was trapped in a building or something like that.

    Aloha Peaceful Prepper.
Something I use all the time is the Master Lock 265D Door Lock Bar Master Lock 265D Door Security Bar
They are about $25 and can be used anywhere. I keep one in my vehicle, and if I travel and stay someplace, it goes in with my luggage. And, I have started expanding the usage to a true multi-purpose tool. Adding a walking cane handle to insert into the top, turns it into a door locking system that goes everywhere with you, doubles as a functioning cane, and of course, canes are legal EVERYWHERE! And a cane is a very effective defense tool. Also, the inside of the upper tube will hold anything up to about 1" OD and roughly 18" long. So, I am making PVC cache tubes to drop inside, for holding all sorts of things (emergency cash, spare keys, meds, instant coffee packets etc). Also, anything that can be inserted and locked in place with the pull-pin just increases the versatility. I am working on putting a variety of reciprocating saw blades (stainless steel, 12" long) inside, that can be pulled out and attached, turning the bar into a long handled pole saw for cutting anything from wood to metal, depending on blade/tooth type. 1" OD PVC drops in nicely, and putting hard rubber push plugs in the ends seals the contents in very nicely and watertight.
Once you have one of these, you find yourself almost feeling naked if you are in a room that you cannot close the door and put the bar up. I use them at every exterior door when I am home, and every interior door whenever I occupy a room, especially the bath room. Worst place to be in case of a home intrusion is the bathroom, so securing as much time as possible is important. Slow/stop intruders from getting in your dwelling, and slow/stop them at every door between them and you.
    Peace & Prepare

kawikahokulani I will have to check that out. Sounds like you are doing some very creative modifications to it and really turning it into an all purpose tool!

The storm whistle is the loudest on the market and is still loud even when coming from underwater

The "big button" is not a button. It is the speaker port. The little button is to test the batteries.

I don't believe any alarm including Vigilant has more then 120db sound, somebody should check Vigilant alarm by sound level meter and upload the result showing video on you tube it will benefit to everyone

Carry a whistle in the bush in case you get lost, or to signal to a partner. Alarm is a waste of money. Noise is not a self defense instrument. Count on people to ignore it.
