What Life Was Really Like for the Average Spartan

  • Sparta had one of the most respected and fiercest fighting forces of their era. Daily life in ancient Sparta supported the military machine to the point where all other aspects of life revolved around it. From the time a Spartan was born to their death, they served the state and its armed forces. Spartans had to be perfect, both in society and on the battlefield. Their civilization worked as a military unit, preparing both men and women to be their best for whatever challenges they faced.

I believe if Spartans knew the art of not only empowering the physical aspect of a man but the mental aspect not in terms of torment but in terms of appreciation, they could have endured more training due to their conscious wanting to do it for a possitive reason instead of being forced to do it, because they still loved their families so they clearly had emotions, that's the conscious you have to empower to become out of body like a plant for example and work for a purpose.

'28 years old now, I've ran, skated, rock climbed, and currently work in a warehouse. Sometimes however I think back and would wish they did me away in Spartan style. 16 years is more than half my life in crutches and a cast. Lots of stress could've been alleviated before I was even capable of acknowledged pain, humility, happiness, sadness. All the best and more so worse things could have never been felt. I still struggle wondering if I should have existed at all.

@@TheCaptain008 Thanks for sharing. I never had your type of persistent struggle or any type of chronic illness. Pyloric stenosis is easily treatable once identified so that's not such a big deal in modern times. Apparently, I also had pneumonia three times by the time I was six. So I definitely wouldn't have made the cut in Sparta. As far as your last sentence, I was diagnosed with clinical depression when I was 16 so there have definitely been times in my life where I've had that same exact thought. My only real response is that we both exist now, so let's keep plugging!

@Matt Lombardo Herodotus' record is what I meant by romanticized by historian. I am not disputing his record. But that is his record. It is similar to a reporter reviewing North Korea from regimen's point of view. He wrote what he saw. It doesn't mean it's 100% truth or Sparta's society was constantly the way Herodotus wrote. It peaked and fell like a sine curve. The fact was that they had lost to Athens at Battle of Sphacteria and to Boeotians at Battle of Leuctra proved that they didn't fare significantly better than other armies in Greece soldiers. That's proven fact from multiple sources that they were defected. Their abilities on average was better but not significantly better.
It was a myth that they were invisible. Romanticized later on by later historians.

In the rise of classical Greece stories were mostly oral. I do know that not all historians agree that they were entirely as harsh as said. They could’ve been. Perikles was known to be the one I guess, to create historical lit. They did have an honor code which was cool. They upheld women in the highest honor as life givers. Even a conformist war breeding society could’ve been easily corrupted from time to time. I would’ve chosen my Spartan cousins nonetheless.🤘🏼

Spartans were famous for how little they would speak in a conversation...their whole goal in life was to serve the army and big conversations were not part of it. In fact, this trait was so unique to Spartans, that today....even after ~2,500 years we say : "Μιλάς Λακωνικά" ...You speak as a Lakonian (meaning a Spartan), to emphasize how dense and short someone speaks.

Really good video but I wish you would of talked about the the Class of citizens known as the Periokoi. They were a free non citizen class of Sparta. As the Spartans themselves would pursue no other profession besides warfare they needed the roles of artisan’s and merchants in the cities who were not treated like helots. They also took positions in the spartan military that were considered too risky for True Spartans like skirmishes and weak Calvary. They acted as the barrier between the Spartans and the helots and were friendly with both classes. They were allowed their own laws and customs but they could not vote on spartan foreign or military policy. I believe I even read mention somewhere that if a Perikoi performed well in battle and impress Spartans they could be elevated to the class of being a Spartan but I don’t know how true that one is. Still I feel like it’s important to mention because in your video to someone who might be new to spartan culture they would probably view them as ruthless owners which is true helots were treated very poorly.

Top tier fighers only get higher up their mental toughness through phycologists and meditation , the Spartats were learning that from 7 years old .
