Buddhism is not a religion its a teaching about our selves and the universe, thats what we have missed here. Buddha never said that he is a god and he never said to worship him like in religions. His main teaching is how we can end our endless sorrows by attaining nirvana as humans. A way to end all the sufferings. Other teachings about the structure of this universe and how we should live in order to live happily(inner peace) until we attain nirvana. Anyone can learn and follow Buddhist teachings like meditation while remain in their own religion.

NNE ENN some of d miracle wat buddha performed was not actually happened its was added afterwards by some fools to show how buddha was superior or to show luk buddha himself was extraordinary why other mythology can't be true coz buddha opposed such mythological and superstitious things....if u have gone through buddha's words after attaining enlightenment ...den u will come to knw dat how dat guy was against of supernatural he was completely a human being and he attain nirvana means the stage of complete satisfaction where not a single trace of craving and aversions remains....he was d one who made ppl to think in logical way....der are many examples but if u want to just opposed buddha and go on the great one accepts d greatness of buddha and not everyone can think same ...every one has der own point of view...

The problem is my fellow that once you start putting into practice what the Buddha taught it becomes very difficult to remain fixed in faith and assured within another religion, regardless of whether you consider buddhism a religion or something else. Too difficult to remain part of a religion that tells me my creator is a jealous creator or that only through his sacrifice and faith in him can I find meaning and salvation. I'm done with that bs!

i like Buddhists, they dont try to kill you for being different, they dont try and annoy you with prayers saying "so sorry that your going to hell", they dont force their beliefs down anyone's throat, and overall are just very kind people. if only all religious/spiritual belief systems worked like that instead of religions that are about child sacrifice, slavery, murder, rape, genocide, etc.

There are lots of Christians that don't force their beliefs onto non-believers, in fact the vast majority of Christians fall into that benign category. Having spent all my life in a number of different European countries, I've never even once in any way whatsoever felt intimidated or "attacked" by any Christian individual or group. I've never had any Christian say to me that I'm going to hell or even that I'm a bad person for not being Christian.
I remember my school's holiday celebrations in the local church with a lot of fondness, no indoctrination whatsoever, just a nice atmosphere and a great childhood memory. Now, as an adult and an agnostic, I can say that I find myself far more attacked and annoyed by aggressive narrowminded atheists who want to spread their materialist "gospel" all over the Internet and have zero respect for dissenting views and opinions. Quite a narrow-minded bunch, they make Jehova's Witnesses pale in comparison...

    • @UristMcTubedwarf

***** one of the biggest problems i have with religion is how parents brain wash their children with it. children should be at a certain age so they can observe both science and religion then choose for themselves which makes more sense. another is how it influences people's moral choices thus effecting the government's law and decision making which then effects everyone else. a women has the right to her own body and if a guy wants to marry a guy there is no problem there, but the bible and other religions say otherwise and try to control people.
also, if someone were to start talking to their imaginary friend in public, they would think he is crazy but if that person just puts their hands together its suddenly ok because hes talking to a god (still just an imaginary friend). religion is just public acceptance of contagious mental illness and many of us atheists are disgusted at how stupid people purposely make themselves.

Correction: All religions have their flaws. Christians have the Crusades, Muslim atrocities are well documented in the 21st century, and you only have to look to Myanmar to see Buddhism's violence. It's not the religion that is the problem - it's the believers.

***** in my country is so that parents punish the child to go to church. It is a compulsion. It seems to me that this is nonsense
In the countryside, for example, people go to church to show new clothes, cars, etc.

Happy to see this discovery. In my view, it doesn't matter when and where exactly Buddha was born, all it matters is what he left / taught us. In fact, Buddha's teaching about the rules of karma (Simply: you reap what you sow) have in deed changed or influenced a lot of people (including me). The rules are always true to the world and they will never change. Anyway, happy to see this.

What makes it not a problem for Buddhists to look into the past, is the fact that they have not committed any Major atrocities in history. Which just adds another reason, as to why they're humble. To me, I think its total outlook, revolves around that word, humble. To become humble, with knowledge and wisdom, while attaining the utmost Respect for all.
I will say, that I am disappointed in this clip because, it does not specify how Buddha's birth was earlier than suspected. It even states how, 600b.c. was already theorized but, I guess this carbon dating of the ash, just reinforces that hypothesis. They also said how 300b.c. is a suspected year of birth, and if that date were concluded in these carbon dating tests, it definitely would've been a far earlier date that would deserve this title that this video was given.

That's all. This strand was purely in connection with that original question and the answer I gave, but somehow your comment which didn't seem connected to her question or my answer got mixed in. Humbly, maybe it might have been better if you placed your comment separately; I'm sure people would find that topic re. 'which branch of Buddhism came first' interesting. This will have to be my last comment now as I'm pretty busy. Best wishes.

Buddhism is a combination of both speculative and scientific philosophy. It advocates the scientific method and pursues that to a finality that may be called Rationalistic. In it are to be found answers to such questions of interest as: 'What is mind and matter? Of them, which is of greater importance? Is the universe moving towards a goal? What is man's position? Is there living that is noble?' It takes up where science cannot lead because of the limitations of the latter's instruments. Its conquests are those of the mind

@Rhythm India was replete with "independant" kingdoms during that and succeeding periods, even during the period of when the British East India Company were present. It has always had kingdoms with their own "independent" maharajas. But ALL such kingdoms were part of India culturally, racially, linguistically, socially, and significantly, geographically. The modern nation state of Nepal is a relatively recent phenomenon and certainly did not exist in Lord Buddha's time. Put your stupid nationalism to one side. Learn first, then come back so I can school you some more. Btw, I am not Indian. I just gratefully acknowledge Asia's deep debt to India.

@@alangervasis You're right in a way because the Buddha didn't claim ownership or authorship of what we call "Buddhism" (he probably called it "paticcasamuppada" or "dependent origination", himself) or claim that he should be worshipped as a god, etc. All he did was decipher nature and its existence in a way that mostly applies to humans. He also didn't want anyone to take his or anyone's word without self verification (Kalama Sutra). So, if he existed, if so when, etc. are inconsequential questions to someone who wants to practice "Buddhism" just the same way a scientific publication is accepted based on the merits of its contribution and not on whether or not a scientist wrote it or if a machine generated it purely by chance. However... Saying a Buddha didn't exist has the same basis as saying Earth is the only planet with life.

There was no Nepal back then. It makes zero sense to say he was born in a country that didn't even exist when he was alive, that's the most moronic thing iv heard. Modern day Nepal was no different than any other land in ancient India. The people were hindu and spoke a Sanskrit language it was indistinguishable from any other Indian region. Nepali people really need to get off this high horse and stop claiming the Buddah was born in a country that didn't even exist in his time. Also just because a lot of Nepali people hate the Indian government that doesn't mean you should hate Indian people. A lot of Indian people aren't happy with the Indian government too.

You can then feel proud of that. You and your country are in no way diminished. I am not sure what the fuss is all about. Both Buddhist and Jain literature talk of Lord Buddha of Budhhism and Mahavir, the 24th Tirthankar (Prophet or teacher) of Jainism were contemporaries, Buddha being slightly younger. It is accepted in Jainism that Mahavir Swami lived 540 BCE-468 BCE and Buddha Bhagvan of the Buddhists lived 563 BCE to 483 BCE. I will also quote from wikipaedia that
"On 21 October 1974 the 2500th Nirvana Mahotsava was celebrated by the Jains throughout India"

vinoth vin : response - please stop being chauvinistic - Sumerian, Egyptian and Chinese civilizations were much older than what Hindus call their 5000 year history, and India's first settlers, the tribal people, inhabited this area long before that - 40-70,000 years earlier! Do they not have civilisations? Their languages belong to completely different language families whereas Sanskrit of the so-called Hindu Sanatanis is an Indo-European language, kin to both ancient Iranian and Latin - old German and English. 'Daughter' is the same as 'Duhitri', she who milks the cows, in Vedic speech. All cultures from Sumer to the Vedic people do of course refer to many much earlier events and origins.

While Indian Hindu scholars date Buddha age on the basis of Purans and extend Buddha's date before 18th century BC in contrast western scholars date Buddha at the same age of Alexander. Both seem biased Indian scholars want show that Indian culture and religions are the oldest but in contrast western scholars what to show that rest of worlds learnt from Greece. We must trust in science, the archaeology. The texts which were written very long after Ashoka how can they give exact date? Are there any key terms in the original Pali Canon? I think yes! There are few key words that can support the date of archaeology of Dr. Coningham. I have read the report of Dr. Coningham, he clearly dates Buddha between 8th and 6th century. National Geography and others seem mispresenting the new dating of the Buddha. Dr. Coningham et al clearly say 300 years before than previously thought. Most of people believe Buddha was born 563 that means Dr. Coningham means 563+300=863 BC. And this date is backed by the key words that I have found in the main Pali Tipitika.
