Star Wars The Roleplaying Game D6 by West End Games- The Backbone of the Star Wars Expanded Universe

  • The very first Star Wars RPG by West End Games (often called "WEG Star Wars") remains, in my humble opinion, the definitive Star Wars RPG. It is the bar that every Star Wars game since has only been able to reach for. Now... with Disney in control of the IP licensing, I see no hope of this situation ever changing. Star Wars' golden age is over.
    Return with me to the heady days of 1987 when LucasFilm was still making Lucas films. When the promise of the Prequels was distant but full of hope and a little game came out of a little publisher in NYC that reignited the passions of fans across the globe. It became the spark that exploded into what would eventually become the Star Wars Expanded Universe. The movement became so powerful that it was embraced as canon by fans, publishers, and eventually George Lucas, himself.
    Then, of course, Disney came along and threw it all away.

    This is a complete set of cardboard miniatures, standees, designed for use in Rebellion Era campaigns. I strongly suggest using them to unwrite the sequel trilogy. Give your players a more worthy end to the Star Wars saga than Disney did. The good Lord knows that won't be hard...

    WEG Star Wars is the only SWRPG anyone would ever need.
    I started DMing it almost simultaneously with AD&D2E and both have become lifelong addictions.

      Off topic, but D&D 2E doesn't get the love that it deserves. It may not have shattered any ceilings, but it was a worthy evolution of 1E AD&D.

    the last star wars game i ran a few years ago before the Rona we had a gunfight in the happy jawa all you can eat buffet. I used a dry erase battle mat to help plot out the battle for my characters.. thanks to the simplicity of the D6 system i was able to easily run a pretty large scale indoors gunfight.

      D6 excels at large, epic, cinematic fight sequences. West End Games also published a compatible set of rules called Star Wars Miniatures Battles for even larger engagements.

    In the star wars d6 imperial source book that came out about 12 years before episode 2 there's a vehicle called the juggernaut that's exactly the same 8 wheeled vehicle seen in the attack of the clones on the Wookie home world .
    Plus every thing from the star wars d6 rpg is canon and has been used in the many novels and other non game related books .
    It is the best version of a star wars rpg ever created

    I still play the fan made Revised and Expanded version of Star Wars d6. It's so fun and fixes many of the issues with the base game. Force powers and Jedi are no longer as broken as they were. It's a great game. I even got my friends interested in the miniatures war game for d6. I 3D printed them all kinds of Star Wars minis to use and we had fun with that. More fun than we had with either FFGs Star Wars RPGs or Wargames with their disgusting gimmick dice.

    • @grumpyoldgrognard9561
      @grumpyoldgrognard9561  ปีที่แล้ว

      I discouraged my players from taking force powers. I was playing a post "Strikes Back" campaign. It didn't make sense for players to have access to force powers. I only had one Jedi in my campaign and his character never got unreasonably OP, but he also died about halfway through the campaign.

    So many people loved this! West End Games is releasing D6 System Second Edition right now on Kickstarter. Are you planning on a video talking about the upcoming update?

    • @grumpyoldgrognard9561
      @grumpyoldgrognard9561  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Honestly, no.
      I love this game. And YES! A LOT of people did. And I love the D6 system. It's elegant, simple, easy to use, and PERFECT for the kind of cinematic gameplay that Star Wars demands.
      But honestly... That's not a style of play I usually indulge.
      I just don't see myself using it.
      I certainly DO recommend it strongly for anyone thinking of running any kind of cinematic action adventure.
      Lucas. Spielberg. OBVIOUSLY.
      Also... stuff like James Bond. I'd give it a hard look for other movie styles like Predator, the Thing, Starship Troopers... It's a super flexible system, easy to homebrew. You can design pretty much an entire campaign by assigning skills to a character sheet.
      But, again... not my usual style. I am more of a wargamer. I prefer a less narrative cinematic and more open strategic campaign.
      "Open" is a lot more work. Worldbuilding is a BEAST. WEG obviously did all that worldbuilding for me. They gave me stats and skills for soldiers, aliens, vehicles, the force... And it was STAR WARS! We had a BLAST with it. Even today... d6 is the best solution for Star Wars. d6 is open source and FREE. The stats for every Star Wars element are available online for FREE.
      I don't see myself using it for much else, though.
      I like the minutiae. I like spending action points and counting out squares. I don't usually run action-oriented campaigns but when a fight does break out, I like a degree of tactical depth that D6 doesn't really support.

    I bought Star Wars RPG back in 1979. A great RPG for Star Wars universe (films 1-3). I have most of the supplements & adventure modules, but I am still collecting. The SW miniatures table top games (Legion, X-Wing, Armada etc.) are worth buying for the minis & tiles to use in Star Wars RPG. The material for Star Wars RPG is just good reading if you are fan of Star Wars.

    It's basically the same system as GURPS just with less options. But for some reason GURPS is described as clunky, crunchy and hard to learn while d6 is described as cinematic, action oriented and easy to pick up. Yes, Character creation in GURPS is more involved but in play, they are basically the same.

    • @grumpyoldgrognard9561
      @grumpyoldgrognard9561  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Both are D6 systems, but there are significant mechanical differences between them. I agree, though, that Steve Jackson's GURPS is an unfairly maligned system. I used it back in the day to play in a "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Other Strangeness" campaign and I found it a fairly straightforward and wonderfully flexible/extendable system.

    I share your opinion on SW Eps. 7,8,&9. I've watched them all several times and I still don't know what's going on---and that's due to the fact that they can't hold my attention long enough. It's sad that the directors of those films took it upon themselves to intentionally destroy the legacy of a truly great film franchise. I do make an exception with Rogue One--I liked that one for the sense of doom that lays over the entire film. It reminds me of those great Samurai films of the 1960's.

    • @williamlee7482
      @williamlee7482 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      There was a few things I didn't like about rouge one but it had to do with Disney not knowing the lore of things like the star destroyers hovering over the city when they don't have repulsor lift engines or else we would have seen the same type of star destroyers hovering over mos eisley which it couldn't do .
      But storywise it did bring things together and answer a few questions.
      It was a good movie

      @@grumpyoldgrognard9561. We have many of the same opinions on Star Wars d6 and AD&D 1e. Just an FYI - "Many Bothans died to bring us this information" was Mon Mothma in ROTJ regarding the 2nd Death Star. Rogue One is a great "movie" but is Professional Fan Fiction IMO. My Canon is Legends. To me, Kyle Katarn got the Death Star Plans in 90's Dark Forces (video game and novels.). There are several Legends sources of how the Death Star Plans were obtained. Legends explains that there were several Death Star plans and that the Rebellion compiled them to have the information needed to find the Death Star Weakness'.

      @grumpyoldgrognard9561  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah. I really wanted to like them, but the franchise was dead the moment they hired J.J. Abrams to direct. Nobody who isn't willing to learn the canon should EVER be trusted with a reboot, much less a sequel. A lazy jackass like Abrams has no business working on established franchises.
