कृष्ण भक्त मीराबाई की मौत एक रहस्य है।
राजस्थान के मेड़ता में मीराबाई का जन्म हुआ था। उनके पिता मेड़ता के राजा थे। कहते हैं कि जब मीराबाई बहुत छोटी थी तो उनकी मां ने श्रीकृष्ण को यूं ही उनका दूल्हा बता दिया।
इस बात को मीराबाई सच मान गई। उन पर इस बात का इतना असर हुआ कि वह श्रीकृष्ण को ही अपना सब कुछ मान बैठी और जीवनभर कृष्ण भक्ति करती रहीं।
मीराबाई का विवाह राणा सांगा के पुत्र और मेवाड़ के राजकुमार भोजराज के साथ हुआ। कुछ साल बाद मीरा के पति की मृत्यु हो गयी।
पति की मौत के बाद उस समय प्रचलित प्रथा के अनुसार मीरा को भी भोजराज के साथ सती करने का प्रयास किया गया। लेकिन वह इसके लिए तैयार नहीं हुई। धीरे-धीरे मीरा संसार से ही विरक्त हो गई और साधु-संतों की संगति में कीर्तन करते हुए अपना समय व्यतीत करने लगीं।
मीराबाई की कृष्णभक्ति का यह तरीका उनके पति के परिवार को अच्छा नहीं लगा। उनके परिजनों ने मीरा को कई बार विष देकर मारने की भी कोशिश की।पर श्रीकृष्ण की कृपा से वो बच गयी।
जब यातनाएं बरदाश्त से बाहर हो गईं, तो उन्होंने चित्तौड़ छोड़ दिया। वे पहले मेड़ता गईं, लेकिन जब उन्हें वहां भी संतोश नहीं मिला तो कुछ समय के बाद उन्होने कृश्ण-भक्ति के केंद्र वृंदावन का रुख कर लिया।
अधिक मत तो यही है कि यहां पर ही वो कृष्ण भक्ति करते-करते श्रीकृष्ण की मूर्ति में समां गईं। मान्यता है कि मीरा पूर्व जन्म में मथुरा की गोपिका थीं। उन दिनों वह राधा की प्रमुख सहेली थीं और मन ही मन भगवान श्रीकृष्ण से प्रेम करती थीं।
बाद में राधा की इस सहेली का विवाह एक गोप से कर दिया गया। उनकी सास को जब इस बात का पता चला तो उन्हें घर में बंद कर दिया। कृष्ण से मिलने की तड़प में मीरा ने प्राण त्याग दिए। और बाद में मीरा के रूप में मेड़ता के राज के यहां जन्म लिया। मीराबाई ने कृष्ण से अपने इस प्रेम का उल्लेख अपने एक दोहे में भी किया है।

जाति ना पूछे कोई जो हरि को पूजे सो हरि का होई...कोई भी जाति अछूत और अस्पृश्य नहीं है अहम ब्राहस्मी, अयात्म ब्रह्म ,सर्व खलविद्म ब्रह्म, प्रज्ञानम ब्रह्म..सब कुछ ब्रह्म ईश्वर ही है तो फिर जाति क्या है...यह भेद बुद्धि है और ईश्वर भेद बुद्धि वालों से भेद रखते है.. दलित समाज के संतो ने ही सबसे ज्यादा ईश्वर के साक्षात दर्शन किए हैं यह सत्य है कोई संशय नहीं।
The royal family heaped humiliation, insults and taunts on Meera, just because she loved Lord Krishna. She refused to follow the tradition of worshiping goddess Durga, the family deity as well as eating cooked meat as prasad prepared from the goat sacrificed to the goddess. Her sister-in-law Udabai did everything to poison the mind of Meera's husband, Raja Bhoj, but Meera remained steadfast in her devotion to Lord Krishna. She declared to her husband that she would never be able to have conjugal relationship with him, because her husband was Lord Krishna. After the death of her husband, Meera was further tortured by her younger brother-in-law, which made her to leave Chittod permanently. She had also accepted a low caste (cobler) great saint Raidas as her spiritual master (Sadguru), which had angered the royal family further. She has declared that her Sadguru was Raidas in many of her compositions. After being thrown out of Mewad, Meera went on a pilgrimage to Mathura, the abode of Lord Krishna in His childhood. There she discussed spiritual matters with other saints and sadhus. She later returned to Dwarika rather than Mewad. After Meera's departure from Mewad, it was fully razed to ground in a muslim invasion. Thereafter, Mewad slowly gathered its glory, but there was a severe famine (Akaal). The king, Uday Singh asked why the kingdom and its subjects suffered continuously, to which, the brahmin Padit in his durbar told that, Mewad suffered the wrath of God, since a pious saintly woman like Meera was tortured and thrown out of Mewad. The king then immediately ordered the Padit and his colleagues to go to Dwarika and bring Meera back. He ordered them not to return without Meera. The brahmins reached Dwarika and requested Meera to return to Mewad, but she refused, since she was happy being in the holy company of her beloved Krishna. But the brahmins told her that they would undertake fast unto death if she did not return with them. Meera was very unhappy to return but at the same time she did not want the brahmins to die due to fast. She agreed to return to Mewad the next day. On the following day, she arrived and straight went to the temple of Lord Krishna. When she did not come out after a long time, the brahmins wondered and finally entered the temple. Meera was not to be seen anywhere in the temple, but her dupatta lay on the hand of Lord Krishna. Meera had merged into the Lord Krishna. She reached mokshadhaam (मोक्षधाम) and was liberated. Meera would never have to take yet another birth as God freed her from the cycle of birth and death permanenly due to her single-pointed devotion to Lord Krishna. Interestingly, the royal clan never allowed others to know what torture Meera had undergone. About 200 years after Meera's final communion with God (Nirvaan), historians accidentally found her own books of poetry, Meera Sur Singhavali (मीरा सुरसिंघावली) and Meera Bruhat Padavali (मीरा बृहत् पदावली), where she had clearly described everything. This is the real story of saint Meera. Presently, her poetry has been translated in all languages worldwide. Annually, her poetry is recited in US by her devotees.

Mira bai got merged in Sri Krishna at Dwarka temple when she was being pressurized to return to Udaipur,which she did not favour.Maharshi Raman of Tiruvannamalai had told about his experience of Pranav Sharir, which disintegrated into small particles and after some time these particles coalesced to form his physical body again. Thus it is very very probable that she merged into the lord or His idol.
