It works for me to keep a ‘donate basket’ in your cupboard, then everytime you go to get dressed and you come across things that make you think “why do I even still have this?” Toss it in the donate basket and then if you find you never go looking for anything in that basket then once a year donate the whole basket without going back through it. Makes spring cleaning the wardrobe much easier as well as helping to keep a closet full of only the things you actually want to reach for each day

That's how I do it as well since forever :) I just have a trash bag sitting in the back of my closet and do the same thing and just donate it once it's full. That happens anytime between once a year and every five years depending on how much my style changes and how much money I have for new things. I also have a strict "no new hangers" policy so once all the hangers are taken I can't hang anything new unless something old gets thrown out.
A good rule for buying clothes (whether from a charity shop or not) would be to donate something from your wardrobe every time you add something to it. So a 1:1 ratio, your wardrobe will always stay the same size 😊
That's a good idea! I always picture someone offering me the item in one hand and the amount of money it's worth in the other. If you would rather have the money, move on. If you're unsure, take a picture of the item (plus the price, shop, and relevant details) ao if you decide you want it later, you know where to go back to.
I need that rule, but for buying clothes 😂 Because I recently had to go out and buy all new trousers/ jeans because I realised I was down to my last singular pair that hadn't worn out! I need to actually replace the clothes I wear through, and not just hang onto the same clothes I had when I was 13 😂
I do this every time I buy something for me. If I bought a new jacket, I'm going to donate one jacket I already have and don't use for 6+ months, it's really good to keep this habit

I agree for the most part! I recently moved somewhere that gets 4 seasons so I had to get additional layers and whatnot. When I get pregnant I will do a mini capsule for that. Past that though, 1 thing in, 1 thing out, plus closet purge every 4-6 months! I went from having over 1,000 hangers 8 years ago to just about 30 now. However I do have far more sweatpants than ever before, but that’s okay.
Mia, I need to personally Thank you. My 3 daughters and son had the unfortunate experience of being in a womans shelter. The donations were SUCH A GIFT, it was an excitement we otherwise didn't have much of in our lives then ....it means more then you know❤

An antique has to be at least 100 years old, vintage is anything under 100 years old. So, vintage is the word you’re looking for. 💜 such a good video! 3:51
True, but with clothing, it is different (I think).
Antique: anything over 100 years, vintage: anything older than 20 years. Else it’s just second hand.
Vintage is under 100 years old, but usually before 1999. May change in upcoming years though. Antique is over 100 years
I thought vintage was anything between 40-99 years old...? I swear when I looked it up back in November everything said 40+ years, and then 100+ for Antiques.
I see people selling 5 year old clothing as "vintage" so often 🤦♀️

Selling your clothes and then keeping the money isn't a bad thing at all. Of course you are such an awesome person to give the money to charity. I just noticed you kept saying, of course give the money to charity and etc, like it's a bad thing to keep the money. No shame queen. Watching Mia attribute her sneezing to “being allergic to sweaters” after the life update and knowing that it’s mold/asbestos is crazy.
I went through this with toxic mold in my old apartment. I had to get rid of my entire wardrobe because mold was literally living inside the fabric and it would show in my skin and lungs.
Clothing hack: limit the amount of hangers and draws/bins you have for clothing so when you buy new ones your forced to go through the clothes to fit the new ones! It’s easier to get rid of clothes when you have ones to replace it❤
Just keep a bag for donations in the closet and take it to when it’s full! (Don’t ever go back through it)
I actually bought new coat hangers 🤣 I wish this tip helped me 😢 but hopefully I can limit the amount of clothes I have!

Hi Mia! I never comment but wanted to take the opportunity to highlight recycling programs that are available for textiles that you would normally throw away (I.e., intimates). Knickey, for example, has a recycling program that diverts old socks, tights, underwear, and bras from landfills by turning those donated items into new materials like insulation, carpet, and furniture batting. I just wanted to throw it out there in case you were interested in options for recycling items that you would typically throw away! There are also other programs that are available, the company Parade has a take back program, there are lots of options!!

I literally just re-watched last year's closet clear out a few days ago! It's fun to see the evolution of you telling yourself you'll get rid of a piece if you don't wear it in a year and then you actually do lol Also these always inspire me to clear out my own closet, so thank you!

Display your collectible clothes!!! Hang them on the wall or fold and frame them in a shadow box, etc. You’ll come up with something, you’re so magically creative 🥰
I resonate with everything Mia said while going through her pants, “Jeans are not comfortable… White pants are a bad idea. These pants don’t make sense with your lifestyle. I have a lot of statement pants… I kind of need to zero in on some neutrals - but, oh well”! 😂 This is literally ME every time I go to get dressed and feel like I don’t have enough pants, because I avoid my two remaining pairs of jeans in lieu of one pair of fancy joggers, a pair of black jeggings, Addidas track pants, and thrifted heathered gray sweats for around the house.
I stopped wearing jeans years ago and only wear leggings. But they discontinued the pair I wear 😭
I'm really starting to believe I'm the only person in the world who actually likes jeans. I literally live in them I can't stand any other types of pants.

i’ve been rewatching your cluttering videos before i dive into decluttering my room. i was recently diagnosed with horsing disorder which was really tough for me to come to terms with but listening to your rational while decluttering has helped me tackle small sections and make progress! thank you for letting us be a part of your process and being so generous by donating❤️
I’m so proud of Mia! She’s called herself a “hoarder” before but I feel like she’s grown so much! She’s a decluttering queen now and has gotten so good at just letting things go. ❤

It's really inefficient if it's for most typical desk things. If you do anything serious on your computer, the air flow in a closet is terrible.

@ESWilliams09 I have a shallow/small closet that's tucked away, so it would be a good space-saving idea for me, but I can understand it being impractical for other floorplans.
it's actually so good to get rid of a bunch of clothes, you just become lighter. And you actually get used to wearing the same clothes more frequently because you don't have a lot of choice. After I got married, I moved to a different state and all my clothes were in bags, I was only wearing a few clothes that I've taken to our honey moon. It was so good, and I lived like that for almost 6 or 7 months until I finally unpacked my stuff. Now my closet is too crowded and I want to declutter (even though I've made it while unpacking). Happy times with much less clothes!!! More space, less thing to choose from, less things to wash, just happiness. I wish you can experiment this sentiment too!

Video Idea: How about hiring a color specialist who will analyze your skin color and undertones to determine if you are a spring, summer, winter or autumn. This will help you determine which shades of each color best suite you and would be fun to watch. I'm seeing a lot of this on TH-cam lately and it seems interesting.

@@myra0224 You can wear whatever color you'd like, BUT there are colors and tones that will suit you the best. We instinctively gravitate towards some colors and avoid others but a professional analysis can be fun and expand the color choices.

I cleared out my boyfriends entire closet a few weeks ago (he hadn't done that since he was 10, so about 12 years....) it made me super excited, I love cleaning and organizing. probably one of the only people on earth to enjoy that and get happiness from it :P

So watching you get rid of stuff and the little things that you remind yourself while going through this process was so nice to see and hear. I’m so happy that you were able to get rid of so much. I've been reading and watching a lot of things about minimalism recently and I have made some decluttering ; it does indeed help you see what's suitable with your current lifestyle and aspirations. literally JUST last night I was thinking that I needed a Mia declutter video to inspire me. THAT TIMING
Loved seeing this closet clear out! It totally inspired me to go through my wardrobe this coming up weekend and do a ruthless clear out. I know deep down there's a large chunk of my closet that I'm not wearing. I'm also quite lucky because the area I live at there's a thrift store that sends seasonal letters in the mail when they're going to have their collection truck nearby and do free pickups!

This video gives me the motivation to tackle my overflowing closets, thanks, Mia! I am a photographer and I also like to revamp a lot of old or thrifted clothing so it's really hard for me to let a lot of things go because I always say to myself, "Oh, I'll use this for a photo shoot" or "I'll sew this up into something cute soon"! 😅

To a point, I do a 1:2 ratio. One new piece added, 2 go out. It helps reduce your closet over time, but also get to go buy new things. I mainly thrift.

Very comfortable filming after, you know you are the first person I see who says you have to get rid of a lot of clothes and you say clearly this is not me. I'm probably moving this year and I feel that is the perfect time for decluttering. Simply only taking what I love most, or replace some things with new items ❤️ bring a whole lot to the thriftstore and start again with a clean slate ✨️

I feel like a clear out is very cathartic. I always feel so much better in the space no matter where it is (kitchen, closet, pantry, etc). Being ruthless with yourself helps force you into making decisions instead of just hanging onto something because you can't let go.
