the filters I really, REALLY need is a set of anti-cloud and anti-rain filter.
Aaahhh… if only it existed 😭
You mean the A-Tacama D.E.S.E.R.T filter? ;)
Now that would be useful :)
It’s been a brutal winter here in Canada ☁️
Through in anti - terrain and anti- neighbors yard and landscape lights and I'm with you!
I’ve been using the D1+D2 filters for over a year now. I have been impressed with every object I’ve photographed and the quality of data being returned. After some flailing in the post processing phase I’ve learned a couple of ways to reintegrate the data into SHO, SOO, HOO and some other combinations. The recent release of the DBXtract tool for PixInsight have really made a difference with data processing also.
Good review Cuiv!
Yes! That DBXtract tool looks great, I'm planning on making a video with it soon :)
@@CuivTheLazyGeek it’s something that would be a good follow up to the C & D filter reviews.
I’ve been shooting with this set for about 6 months now, I also shot a couple of reviews on them, albeit in Russian. I remember well my first impressions, especially from D2; at first my brain refused to believe, especially after L-Extreme, that I had a colored Touptek. Very decent filters for a reasonable price. Clear Sky!
Fully agree, clear skies!
This is very interesting! I know Askar has had issues in the past with band pass accuracy but I didn't expect this the D1/D2 filter set to be that good! Cuiv you really have become an expert in spectrophotometry of retail filters exposing the truth vs the manufacturer's claims 👍 I am happy to see that Askar has created a great filter set 🙂 Thanks a lot!
Great video again! Would love to see an image taken with C1 next to one taken with a D1, and a C2 next to a D2. And of course same object, same exposure time etc. Can you do that?
Unfortunately no, as I've already returned the D filters to their owner! Also it's always complex since it needs to be done in one night before and after Meridian so variables can be controlled, and I can't think of good objects to do so in this season
I need filters that will keep me warm and dry while in my back garden.
Hahaha
Nice and thank you Cuiv, been waiting for a video from you about these filters.
Happy to help!
Yours channel is one of my favorites. Although you do help me part with my money. Not like your twisting my arm, but you do keep coming up with things I want to buy. I do have the Optolong L-Extreme and L-Ultimate. So I think this time I'll get just the D2 filter. And then if I want to I can always get the D1. Another great Video! Keep em coming.,
I'm sorry... I do try to keep my videos objective but there's so many tempting shiny things :)
Thanks for the great review! I'm very glad you mentioned the performance with fast optics, especially the hyperstar. I thought this would get overlooked but you did a good job addressing this. 👍 I was aware of the dual Ha/Oiii filters but the Sii/Oiii was new to me. It's a great concept only you probably can't leverage these on nights with full/near-full moons... since they will both pass blue/green. IMHO, I'd still hang onto a dedicated Ha or Sii for that reason.
Yeah with monochrome - still the red pixels won't be that affected by the moonlight!
I bought these after your c1/c2 review... they are amazing
Awesome, glad you enjoy them!
@@CuivTheLazyGeek for me, the c1/c2 were financially the better option, but 35nm on OIII is a bit broad for my local sky conditions, the 7nm of thr D series has been incredible... even imaging 50⁰ angular separation to a 65% moon provides very contrasty images... it was my first foray into multi-narrowband filters with an OSC camera, and I'm pleased to say that my first night with them yielded one of my best astro photos to date...
i didn't know Cuiv also spoke german 4:15 xD sorry couldn't help myself there, great video as always Cuiv ! I love watching your filter reviews, please keep doing them. They are very informative and are of a huge help to me, as i myself am looking for a dual narrowband filter for my modified Nikon dslr to purchase. I have been looking at Altair Astro 6nm Dual Narrowband filter, would love if you could compare it to the 4nm variant, if you can get your hands on one. Greetings from Germany and clear skies !
NEIN! Ich kann kein Deutsch sprechen! :-) Not sure if I'll be able to compare but I'll keep it in mind!
Thank you for another informative review
My pleasure!
Thanks Cuiv.
Found the vid that I asked a question lol
Thanks
Great video! Looks like pretty nice filters, but I'm happy I got the Altair 4nm equivalents, even though they're super expensive. 😬
Yep, narrower is better!
Another excellent and helpful video.
Can you remind us which spectrometer you are using?
Thanks! I use the Goyalab Indigo!
Thanks for the great review. The SV220 have halos like the L-Extreme. I just picked up the new NBZ-II which would have no to very minimal halos. Of course I'm having storms here in Los Angeles. I hope you can review that filter soon and what would be a good Oiii/Sii pairing for the NBZ-II that also does not shift on band pass? I chose it for anti halo and that it works for my C6 Hyperstar as well as my AT102ED.
Like most I assume, my first bortle 9 filter was the L-enhance. Then because of posters on your channel, SV220. Then your Pleiades capture video, you commented on using a UV/IR cut filter, so I bought the ZWO brand. Then the C1,C2 review, and the Sii/Oiii is in my arsenal. I've been having lots of fun re-imaging targets and pulling out that blue green sulfur! Now you tease me again 😢
I'm so sorry! I do think you have all you need :)
It's galaxy season, contemplating Idas GNB. Your review was favorable.
Great video as always. Light pollution really does cost real dollars. Thank goodness for a Bortle 3 sky!
Nice! I'm jealous!
I just ordered the svbony 220, so we shall see how it performs. When filters get close to the price of a new camera, I tend to choke....But interesting nonetheless on the Askar filters, just a little to rich for my blood at this point. Thanks for this video !
I've also ordered the SV220 to see how well it does!
Oh yes, finally ! hope to see if you get better than I do with mine. Thank you Cuiv ! What do you think of them compared to the Altair you got few months ago ?
The Altair also had a great spectrum and are up to spec, that's what I'll keep using going forward :) I've already sent the D1 and D2 filters back to Dave!
Very interesting, as always! Any way to calibrate / adjust your spectro in transmittance ??
It is calibrated, but because of its slit window, it will underestimate tight bandpasses
I got these filters a few months ago, although I could only try it out once due to clouds and my newborn (not sure which affected more my astro-sessions). Nevertheless I got one of my best pictures so far with them. Thanks for the review and for my own sake of mind I’ll pretend I got a flawless copy too lol.
Yes I'm sure you got a flawless copy haha :)
Hi Cuiv. Really informative video. Do you think I can use this set for seestar S50?
It's something I need to test, I've never sure of what the exact specs of the default filter are, I'm worried they'd be blocking SII...
I've been looking for a good dual bandpass filter for a while. And, it's disheartening to hear you are in a lottery with these filters 😢 When you spend that kind of money, you expect to get what they are advertising.
However, these random filters you tested give me hope. Great video, Cuiv 👍
Yep, I fully agree. I get the feeling filters have gotten better since though....
@CuivTheLazyGeek lately, I have been focused on the upcoming solar eclipse on April 8th. So, all of my equipment is set up for solar work right now. I live on the eclipse path and hope to capture the event from my home observatory. Then it's back to deepsky imaging.
Hope it's clear here in 10 days?...
Hi Cuiv,
A little off topic but on your d2 image there is a ghost circle to the right of Alnitak. I know it’s probably common, but I’m wondering what caused that as I have that issue with my vixen r200ss rig lately. I never had that before. Thanks for your informative videos! Love it!
Dan
This is just a dust mote! Proper flats would have fixed it :)
@@CuivTheLazyGeek thanks Cuiv! I guess my flats aren’t working right as mine were in the image after doing flats and darks and bias. Using ASIAIR for them. Assuming the jpeg live image I’m looking at on my iPad integrates the flats and darks and bias frames
Hey Cuiv! Speaking of the sv220, I'll be quite interested if you tested it one day or another
Mwahahaha, stay tuned :-)
Darn you Cuiv (well, actually this was very good timing)! I was just going to buy the D2 filter since I have the l-eXtreme filter (which proliferates in producing halos), but after watching this, I’m selling it & now purchasing the D1& D2 filters. Thanks (I guess 😩)! I’m going broke…
Why sell the L-eXtreme?? Because of halos?
@@CuivTheLazyGeek yes!
I just grabbed the C1 and C2 but haven't had the chance to use them yet. I'd be pretty curious as to what the practical differences in end images would be between these and the D1/D2 outside of potential halos. I can picture the difference being significant somewhere like Tokyo, but I shoot from bortle 5 where I imagine the difference would be less drastic.
I think for Bortle 5, you'll be perfectly happy with the C1 and C2!
@@CuivTheLazyGeek - Thanks, that was my guess! I've been shooting narrowband with the ZWO duo band which I believe is pretty comparable to the C1 and have had few problems with processing so far (I only bought both C1/C2 as my duo band is 1.25"). Looking forward to getting some experience with them!
For the Sii passband it looked from the graph like it might be passing a few % of H-alpha even if the attenuation well outside the passband is strong, but you didn't mention a number. Given H-alpha is typically a fair bit intrinsically brighter than Sii I'm wondering if that's an issue?
Can't find a link to the potato filters you mentioned... Is that only on Alibaba? or maybe Temu?
Hey Cuiv -- great video again. I bought a D2 about a year ago and pair it with my L-eXtreme (LX) I've had for a while. The LX certainly has halo problems -- good to see the D1 is better. One thing I'd like to see and for you to comment on is to compare the two Oiii images from the D1 and D2 filters. I've seen that my LX Oiii (seems) much better than the D2. However, I then saw one of your other videos where you explained how the Ha may be leaking into the Oiii on my LX. Making it seem higher SNR, when it's actually contaminated by Ha. Hmmmm. I thought my D2 was bad, but now I think you are right about the leaking. Would be interesting to see your comparison and your comments on the differences.
I've mentioned that in a previous video about narrowband filters in general! It's the Bayer matrix:)
I've mentioned that in a previous video about narrowband filters in general! It's the Bayer matrix:)
I've mentioned that in a previous video about narrowband filters in general! It's the Bayer matrix:)
You can correct for the Bayer “light leak” using PixelMath. James Lamb has a video on it, or you can just calculate how much Ha is in the Green channel (and Oiii in the Red channel) using the camera sensor spectrum.
It works really well. If I could post an image, I’d show my workings but for a 2600MC with Ha/Oiii dual narrowband filter, Ha=1.23*R - 0.04*G, Oiii= 1.118G - 0.219R. I don’t have the D2 yet so don’t have those equations.
I believe APP (which I use) automatically does this sort of math when you process the data telling it you used an Ha/Oiii filter. But seems to me, once the leak happens there is no way to unwind it. The channel weights you mention still assume a perfectly isolated filter. I think…
And in the cart it goes...
Hahaha I'm so sorry!!
I have a color touptek imx571 like you do, and I’ve generally been exceedingly happy with it. However, people who know a lot more about astrophotography than I do keep telling me to sell it and go mono (which would cost about $3k)! I have an IDAS NBZ that does well without haloes, but have been considering a C2 just to be able to get tri-color narrowband images… think it will be “good enough” for a fellow lazy geek like me?
It would be good enough indeed (better if you're not in the city), although the pros aren't wrong: technically monochrome is better, but it's also a pain in the arse at the same time!
Thanks for your support by the way!
@@CuivTheLazyGeek thanks / you’re welcome! Was thinking C2 instead of D2 due to the wider bandpass for using with my Roki f/2 (and of course price).
Narrow band filter you get with the dwarf 2 in your opinion is it any good?
It's more of a wide dual band filter, not quite comparable
Is it only me, or the guy really looks like Mr Yabatan...? 本当にびっくりしたー!
Hahaha, a little bit maybe but not quite the same :) びっくりしないでー
@@CuivTheLazyGeek Mr Yabatan's ideos are very different but still quite entertaining. But yours are very Educational, which is an undoubted plus! I learn a lot from every video - 毎度ありがとう!
hello Cuiv
Do they suffer the same issue of failed flat calibration as the Optolong L extreme/ultimate ? It is really a pain in the neck with those filters.
I've never heard of that issue, nor have I experienced it! Are you talking about the 294 sensors with narrowband filters?
@@CuivTheLazyGeek It’s not only with the 294. With the 2600 you also get the issue of failed calibration, with hideous « marbling » of the images. Currently, the only known solution is to take very long exposures.
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Hello my lazy and useful friend,
Could you please send me a link to purchase a spectrometer?
I live in a very polluted city of about 16 SQM or less, and I want to know the efficiency of my filters.
Search for Goyalab Indigo! But it's not cheap...
But why not just Ha-Oiii and Sii?
Why not collect twice the SNR for OIII? :-)
@@CuivTheLazyGeek I know Oiii can do with a lot more time, but just wondered if there was another reason. Thanks!
I’ve come to the conclusion that these OSC filters are pointless.
The whole point of OSC is not to have to take several images with different filters and then recombine it in make a RGB image.
If one uses these filters then you may as well shoot mono with a huge benefit in image quality because you are using 100% of the sensor.
I use the Antlia Gold filter with my QHY268C. I really dislike the red tint (Ha) so I have to take L images and maybe even Oiii so I may as well use my QHY268M.
The only time using OSC filters is when you can’t buy a mono setup or cannot get to a dark site.
Pointless for you personally, you mean? Not all of us have (the budget for) a color cam and a mono cam and associated filter sets, filter wheel etc.
😂 I bought both ASI2600MM and OSC 2600 MC Duo along with 10 Antlia filters for both camera. But I haven’t used it in 6 months because of the the weather ! Now once again Cuiv is trying to make me purchase another set of filters and add it to my collection of 3nm and 5nm filters … I don’t want filters ! I have enough of them ! I could open a decoration store ! I just want clear skies nothing else ! Sometimes I think about dumping all that stuff into the bin and forget this stupid hobby. We call us « astrophotographers » when we’re only «astro-» ! I mean, how many photos did you actually took since last year ? I took only one. That’s ridiculous.
@@tvanpeer this is why I qualified my point by saying “if you can’t buy a mono”
But once you go down the rabbit hole of buying the expensive OSC filters you are close to the price of a mono setup
@@shaunozs1ra92 I am not sure if the math will hold up. Your QHY268M is $300 more expensive than the QHY268C (current numbers on Ageena), so that difference alone already pays for the first filter 😀. So at that point I can shoot RGB and HO (or SO) with the 268C, but I still need to buy 6 or 7 filters for the 268M and most likely a filter wheel. So cost wise I doubt mono can be cheaper than OSC with filters. On sharpness however mono will of course beat OSC hands down.
@@tvanpeer fair point. I’m fortunate to have a few cameras both mono and OSC. I live in a Bortle 9 area so without the filters the OSCs sees very little action. However, if the weather gods play along I go to a dark site at new moon and then with an Astromik L-1 it’s fantastic to shoot OSC.
Nice review Cuiv! I have a Optolong L-extreme I use on my 8 Edge @ f7 setup and IDAS NBZ for Hyperstar setup. Do you think Askar D2 filter will work with both filters for Hubble palette?
Yep, that works!
Another great video Cuiv, quick question, would these work with a hyperstar at f/2???
I actually think they'd be fine because of the larger bandpass in Ha and SII! But the bandpass needs to be well centered
how fucking expensive .... seriously ... it doesn't make any sense
you should see the rediculous price in the EU, over 850 USD for the $540.00 kit from the USA. Should feel lucky if youre in the states
