If anyones curious, a basilica is actually a shape, one of the ancient architectural shapes, it’s basically a cross in plan view and is typically rounded at the altar but doesn’t have to be.
7:45 Square is English. In Italian it is called a Piazza, which does not specify it's shape. And the center monument is an obelisk from Egypt brought by the Romans and placed in a circus the Basilica was built on top of. The obelisk is one solid piece of stone compared to the Washington monument which is made up of a brick construction.
History lesson: the monument on St. Peter's Square is actually an Egyptian obelisk. They are all around the globe, But the most famous obelisk is the trio of Cleopatra's needle, (London, Central Park, New York and Place de la Concorde, Paris) Those were gifts from Egypt.
To answer your questions @Bubbaflubba a Basilica is a church built “off of” a relic, which is a part of a body or some item associated with a saint (in this case it is built off of St. Peter the first Pope, who was crucified upside down not too far away from where he is buried, which you can actually see his remains to this day). The obelisk in the middle serves no real religious significance, the Romans took it from Egypt and the Vatican just kept it because they wanted to (I honestly do not know why they kept it).
Hello! Just a follow up for anyone like Bubba. A basilica is a Christian place of worship. In the so called ‘Hierarchy of Places of Worship’ , it is the highest rank. Below it is the Minor Basilica, the Cathedral, the Cathedral Church, the church, and finally the Chapel. God bless!
Just some food for thought: The difference between a basilica and a cathedral is that a cathedral is the home parish for the bishop of a diocese, whereas a basilica is the home parish for an archbishop of an archdiocese. An archdiocese is one large diocese or multiple dioceses under one bishop. So bc the pope is the head of the international church, that makes him the highest archbishop in the world and that therefore makes St. Peter’s a basilica rather than a cathedral or a mere parish.
This is actually not the case. The designation of basilica are kind of outside the Catholic hierarchy (although basilicas can also be cathedrals). They are given the Basilica designation by the Pope for their architectural, historical, and/or spiritual significance. Cathedrals are the home parish for any bishop or archbishop. Also St Peter's Basilica isn't actually the home parish of the Pope. St John Lateran Archbasilica is the cathedral (also a basilica) of the Pope. St Peters Basilica (not a cathedral) is in the Vatican and the Pope gives homilies there more often so its thought if as his cathedral.
Interesting fun fact the original design of this building was made by Michelangelo, which is why the back half of the building was so symmetrical because it was originally designed off a Greek cross which looks like this + and then it was later changed to a Christian cross ✝️, and the protruding end was added, however this unintentionally messed up the silhouette of the building by blocking the view of the dome, which is why the huge courtyard was added among other reasons.
If only someone would make a tutorial on home to build this even if it took many episodes I would rebuild it myself cause I’m working on a whole punch of cool builds going down while you walk my Golden Gate Bridge build
Wow the building looks great ! Great job ! But omg american history and geography ffs, calling an obelisk "a monument like the washington monument", or calling classical archistecture "greek" hahaha
I wish you can make a tutorial video on how to build this even if it takes a series. I would love to watch that. now I subscribe to your channel

Catholic Minecrafter spotted!
Why shouldn't they keep it? It's been there for thousands of years. It's like saying the Egyptian should take down the pyramids
@@thelostenderman-pinoyminec2827 yo guessed right lol

One way to differentiate a basilica from a church is that a basilica holds some sort of holy relic or artifact while a normal church does not
