I got to be a Clean-Up artists on this. You mentioned keeping the guide lines in the animation, those guide lines were actually added in last in the Clean-Up process. Once the character were finished with Lineart, Coloring, and Lighting; the artist would add skeleton shapes of the character on top of the animation for the keyframes (if not the whole shot), as well as sketch a few lines over the Lineart to look rougher and give it the feel of a Disney film from the 60s/70s
10:09 The voice actor for mordecai is ProZD, I believe he made some videos on his TH-cam earlier. He used some panels from the comics and voiced mordecai as well, very fitting that he got to voice the character
@Infinity Yeah, they are pretty enjoyable and entertaining. The lackadaisy channel also has videos like those ones this time with the actual cast from the pilot.
"Watch the worlds most idiotic stuntman ride an elephant through a flaming gauntlet of-" XD A hilarious detail that I missed when I watched the animation myself, since I had subtitles turned off.
Great Pilot! Wasn’t aware of the comic before watching and immediately fell in love with the world and characters. Which is all you can really ask for from a pilot.
Tracy Butler is going to continue the Lackadaisy webcomic soon! Depending on the reception and financial aid, she said they would do more animation; though they do have comic dubs.
17:35 the reason Mordecai doesn't shoot is because he used to work for the Lackadaisy speakeasy, alongside Viktor and the speakeasy's owner, Altas (Mitzi's husband), before Atlas was killed and Lackadaisy fell on hard times (after which Mordecai was hired by Mr. Sweet of the Marigold speakeasy). this is referenced when Serafine says "do we have to worry about you getting sentimental about old times?" Long story short, Mordecai used to know Rocky and Ivy, and the two times he missed his shots while aiming at the car during this animation were when Rocky appeared in his vision ( 11:13 ) and when Ivy looked back. Mordecai could've also have hesitated when he saw Ivy because Viktor (Mordecai's former partner-in-crime) thinks of Ivy kind of like a daughter figure, and is very protective of her (as evidenced at 24:50 ). Mordecai _knows_ how dangerous Viktor can be, especially if any harm were to come to Ivy
Yep. Unofficially, Viktor assumed the mantle of Ivy's godfather when Atlas died. Viktor was also Mordecai's mentor in the beginning and the two were partners for years - they both know each other *very* well. Had Mordecai taken his shot at Ivy, he might as well have autographed the bullet; Viktor would have known exactly who shot her. Mordecai is extremely analytical and, in that split-instant, he decided that the liability of Viktor's personal animosity vastly outweighed any potential gain from stopping this particular shipment of coffin varnish. Rocky, too, knows Mordecai quite well. This is why he grabbed the wheel once he saw Mordecai aiming at them - while he didn't know precisely who Mordecai was aiming for, he could sense when Mordecai would fire and chose that exact moment to swerve the car.
It's funny you should call the Tommy Gun a 'Chicago Typewriter' while watching this. That actually _is_ a nickname for it, it wasn't invented for RE4. And it gained that nickname _during the Prohibition Era,_ the very era in which this story is set. Chicago was the de facto center of illicit booze in the US, between all of wide, empty Illinois and Indiana and their endless cornfields to use for moonshine and woods and isolated houses to hide stills in and make moonshine en mass, Booze-legal Canada being right the other side of the Great Lakes where a small boat could easily slip back and forth with genuine quality beer, wine, and whiskey, and the good Ol' MIssissippi River right there running right down the whole width of the nation for easy secret transport and distribution to hundreds of supply lines along its length. If a gang controlled Chicago, a gang controlled _most of the quality illicit booze in the US._ So gang fighting was constant, and Tommy Guns were widely employed in this constant gang superwar because they were cheap, reliable, effective, and the Thompson company didn't ask much in the way of questions (Infamously the first crate of commercially available Thompsons was sold to _the IRA.)_ So the nickname comes from the fact that a lot of news during the Prohibition was caused by tommyguns. A lot of news during that period was written... with a Chicago Typewriter.
The cast is really awesome in this. There's already comics about Michael Kovach of Murder Drones and the Hazbin pilot, but Malcolm from Nostalgia Critic is Nicodeme (the Creole brother) and JJ and the carnival barker, and ProZD is Mordecai the serious one.
Something I really like is that the charecters and the world feels in touch with the real world. Sainy, crazy, and insane characters do not have the same impact if everything and everyone around them is just as crazy. Like In Helluva Boss, a big personal peeve for me was that the human world and even the sheep angels were just as insane as the people in hell and the main characters. So they are just normal and their out there nature for the most part is just normal and feels almost cheap because everything is like that. The shock value quickly wears off for me. But with shows like this, where everyone is a bit more in touch with the real world, the character's funny, out-there, and insane quirks have a bigger impact. And the different levels of their different out-there quirks do affect how the world reacts to them and how they react to the world. Idk, all respect to all the hard-working and talented people out there creating an animated show or episode. But for me, this show "fixed" a lot of the issues I personally have had with those other more popular animated shows we have been blessed with on TH-cam.
Yep, and so's her dad, as is evident in old photos of him. Though Tracy has stated the cat part is just a stand-in for humans. She just happens to like drawing cats.
That building in the background over Rocky's shoulder as he played is still there in the St. Louis, and the city does have limestone caves under the streets, which brewers used for keeping beer cold back in the day.
12:16 yeah something i've always liked about Lackadaisy (even more so in the comic) is how well-researched and accurate a lot of stuff is, in general, but also specifically to stuff during that era! Tracy's always put a lot of work into research for this story
Lackadaisy as a IP has been around for a real long while now. Since the 2000s era like 06 for example. I got into it upon watching the very first trailer for it and immediately subscribed to the Lackadaisy Channel and learned all I could about the production, animation progress, the cast , and the artist herself Tracy J Butler and her awesome artsy skills and just the many amazing ways of how well researched this series is in terms of historical accuracy. Especially when it comes to the comic which I've reread about maybe 11 or 14 times already. I love all of the characters and their history and its just good stuff.
You're right, Ivy was based on Tracy's cat Ivy, as were Rocky and Calvin ("Freckle"). All of them have since passed away since this was started in 2006. Tracy had to take a break doing art for a bit to mourn them. Also, her one-eyed cat, Luca, died during production. You can see his photo in the "Production Cats" board in the end credits.
It's depressing how many people reacting to this don't realize tommy guns aren't built for accuracy. Likewise, it doesn't matter if you have the most accurate rifle in the world, if you're shooting from the hip like Serafina does, you WILL NEVER BE ACCURATE.
There were a number of Prohibition-era slang terms to describe agents of the US Government tasked with cracking down on illegal booze: ~ "Feds" and "G-Men" (short for "Federal Agents" and "Government Men") ~ "Revenuers" and "T-Men" ("Treasury Men") owing to the fact that enforcement of Prohibition was originally under the IRS ~ "Dry" and "ProHee", though these terms were generally applied to anyone who supported/promoted Prohibition "Dragons" were the 'worst of the worst' as far as speakeasies and rum-runners were concerned. While most were professional in their demeanor, "dragons" were zealots to their cause and wholly incorruptible. While all agents paid lip service to enforcing Prohibition, many were easily swayed - fat bribes to 'turn a blind eye' or 'look the other way' was fairly standard, as kickbacks vastly outmassed an agent's official salary; some agents would turn around and resell confiscated alcohol; a number of agents actually 'sublet' as enforcers/torpedoes for one (or more) underground enterprise and operated as gangsters under the color of law. Bonus Trivia: The popular ginger ale Canada Dry originated during Prohibition.
I wondered if those sketch lines were either on a separate layer or due to time constraints or budget. With it being a pilot, it wouldn't be as weird to expect some minor flaws.
@@NOWABOmusic It's not as noticable after the intro, though. Even if it were intentional, why isn't it as prevalent afterwards? Either by accident or they don't have the time to clean all that up, which is fine.
Tracy and the Lackadaisy creative team mentioned the sketch lines were intentional as a callback to the Xerox era of animation long ago. Like the 1930s and early 40s hand drawn animation.
@@cherrygrabber7172 actually, because sketches generally go on the bottom layers of a drawing when doing art digitally, they wouldn't have been visible over the tops of the drawing had the animators not had time to clean it up/accidentally left it in. the sketch lines were added in after the drawings were inked and colored. not to mention the fact that when animating a big project like this, the animations get watched over and over again hundreds of times both by the animators as well as by project supervisors and the director. there's no way a a mistake that big would go unseen (plus the fact that if they didn't want sketch lines there, they would've prioritized that over the fancy light tricks in the intro, as cleanup comes _before_ fancier rendering in the drawing/animation process). Tracy and the Lackacrew have said it's a stylistic choice, in homage to an older style of animation. the reason the sketches aren't so obvious after the intro is either bc it's darker in most scenes after that, or because they wanted the style reference more in the intro (since that's the "artsiest" part) than in the rest of the animation, where it might be more distracting :) you can see more sketch lines later on in the animation, like here 17:41
