    Something you did not mention and you might not know. Unlike the A series Canon bodies the meter in the FTB is not an averaging meter. It is very heavily center weighted and almost a spot meter which might explain why you had issues with poor exposure. Basically the camera completely ignores everything not on that center square so first step is to point the center of the frame at whatever is darkest or lightest in the frame to essentially get a spot reading. Then recompose and shoot and you should get great results. Because of this I find especially for backlit subjects I get the best results out of all of my cameras since it completely ignores the giant light source behind the subject. But if you start shoot with it without knowing this it can make for very inconsistent results. Also if you are worried about camera shake this camera has mirror lock up.

      Thanks. This camera is my main workhorse for 35mm. it was my father in laws camera. I have the original manual, warranty card (doubt Canon would honour it now) and the original sales receipt. :) So yeah not all of the info that came with the original documentation is easy to find online.

      Hi Daniel... it's not heavily weighted, it meters ONLY the reflected light in the center rectangle. It is a defined central area meter. So you either want to place a middle tone in that center rectangle, or use the central rectangle as a spot meter. It is really quite useful, but very different fron the built in meters in just about all other SLRs.

    This video was VERY helpful to me. I bought a FTb back in 1977 and loved how it worked. but, sadly, I let it sit around and go downhill. I am trying to clean it up and get it into usable condition. One of the main problems I have come up against is the battery. trying to find a replacement. I appreciate the info you gave about the battery. VERY HELPFUL!! Also, all your info was helpful to me to get back to using this camera. It alwys took good pictures. I also subscribed to your channel. Thanks!!

    My meter died. Put a fresh battery in. Any idea how to fix? Heard your comments about not using your meter, but would like to have it working none the less. Thanks for any ideas you may have. Could just be a loose wire. I may take the plunge and take the top off and have a look. Great old camera. Thanks for your content.

    Thanks for video , especially for the tip with the lightmeter app. I immediately installed, using to control and use for Voigtländer Bessamatic ( incredible camera ) :-)
    I use the Canon FTb long time... very long time... The camera doctor take my FTbs and adjust the internal Lightmeter to 1.5V batteries, That one we can find everywhere in germany...
    I love the FTb, uncomplicated, build rock solid a lot of lenses, i prefer fixed focal length ( Festbrennweite )
    Have Fun with Your FTb :-)

    I've heard this style of light meter being called matchstick and needle it is a fairly common to find on a wide range of cameras. I have a Minolta Srt100 than uses it. But to be honest I've never tried it has a oddball cell battery that I just didn't want to.spend money on. I just use a iphone app mylightmeter pro instead. There is a free version that works great but the pro lets me chose a big f stop like f175 which is super handy for pinhole cameras.

    • @DanBullmanPhotography

      Josh, do you know if that app is available on Android? I use Pocket Light Meter, but it's kind of annoying to use at times (like it will give me a reading of f/16 at 1/30 second - who the hell shoots those kind of settings handheld?). So I'm shopping for a new metering app now.

    • @mustangjosh94
      @mustangjosh94 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      The free version is but not the pro version. I haven't tried it much on android the free version is set up like a vintage light meter so you can only pick iso and it matches multiple fstops amd shutter speeds and you pick the one that fits your needs the best.

    Thank you so much for this video! This is my first FTB film camera and the only other film I've shot was with an A-1 which is very** different mechanically. I actually thought the light meter was broken because I had added a new battery, but was expecting a digital light meter reading (like in the A-1). I'm currently gearing up for my first road trip through the southwest with the FTB , so I'll be sure to watch some of your other videos for other helpful hints. Thanks again!

      Fidelis George I put a Varta 1.5V battery in mine and compared the meter reading, for the same subject, to the one on my Nikon fe. They were exactly the same so I left it in. I haven't had any problems with exposure.

      They use a volt regulator, so 1.5v wil go down to 1.35 by the camera

    • @kacper2kaczmarek

      @@user-tj1el9uo1m The FTb has no voltage regulator unfortunately.

    • @mrastro5226
      @mrastro5226 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kacper2kaczmarek you have to install it. It is just a tiny Diod that need to be soldiered on the power cable. May be a previous owner of his FTb camera had it done, and he didn't know about it, reason why his Nikon and his FTb meters readings are the same, assuming that his Nikon meter is calibrated. Otherwise a 1.5 battery alone without the diode, will definitely throw the exposure by 1 to 2 stops (I don't remember), for negative film no much of a problem because of the latitude of the negative film, if you shoot slide film (reversal film), then you are in trouble, unless you know by how much your meter is off, and make the proper adjustment. Anyway, in either case, it is always important to calibrate your meter to the film you are using no matter if your camera is 60 years old or brand new. This mean that you have to sacrifice a roll of film for testing. A lot of literature of these test. I will recommend to buy John Shaw book "John Shaw's Nature Photography Field Guide", cost 4 to 5 bucks on ebay, including shipping. Best book you can read on nature photography, and exposure, and page 22 he explains extremely well in detail on how to calibrate your meter. I guarantee you that you will not regret buying this book. I have all his books. 4 to 5 bucks for the book, one roll of slide film, 10 to 11 bucks for development.. I suppose you own a light box, a good loupe, and you are on your way to make spot on exposures to your own taste, and with great consistency. A handheld spot meter, like a Pentax V spot meter, will be a big plus, unless your camera has one built-in, like the Canon T90..(the best camera ever made even with today's technology to my humble opinion, I own 3 of them, they will never die). But with good discipline and good field technics any camera of any brand will do an excellent job, as long as the shutter speeds are accurate, the body is very tight to light, means light seals and mirror bumper are in good condition, offer option to shoot in manual mode, and can operate without a battery (if you already own a handheld meter), like the FTb QL, the FT, the F1 old, etc..I mentioned Canon cameras because I am a Canon guy, and they are very reliable, said that any camera from other brands with the above condition will perform as well. Of course, have good quality lenses. FD lenses are excellent, if in good condition. Let's keep film alive. Hope this will help..

    This is my first film kit coming from a purely mirrorless background. Most videos say about the battery, oh well they might not make it anymore or blah blah get this and get that. You straight up showed the page in full detail. I ordered one seconds after watching this. Great info here all around. I was going to try my luck without a light meter, but now no need!
    Is there a standard ISO film # to shoot for? I got Ektachrome E100 because of some recommendations for film in general but I don't know if this would translate to my camera or if I just wasted money based on a Goggle search.

      +Adrian Marin I'd recommend searching online for a camera shop in your area that will do repairs. You should still be able to get parts for it. Or you could buy the part online and find a TH-cam tutorial to replace it yourself if you like to tinker. Canon FTb bodies are fairly cheap on the used market so definitely weigh the cost of repairs with the cost of just buying another FTb

    • @roiloubia4483
      @roiloubia4483 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes you can use the FTb camera without a battery. You can use the "f16 sunny rule" ( Google that and you will find a bunch of article explaining this rule and how to use it), or get yourself an external Light Meter ( check on eBay, there is a bunch of them). A Spot meter would be the ideal, most accurate way of metering a scene, but you need to educate yourself on how to use it (Google Zone System). The FTb is an excellent camera, professional level if we'll maintained). I own the Canon Ftb QL and the Canon FT QL. Got them many years ago from eBay in good condition, but nevertheless got them CAL'ed, just after purchase. I use a Pentax Spotmeter. My. Battery compartment are empty. I strongly advice to get yours CAL'ed by a professional if the camera is very old, worth it in my humble opinion Feel free to ask me any question about this subject). Have fun with it, and film photography.

      Dan, Apparently the battery I mentioned in my question is a 1.5 volt battery and I understand that it should be 1.3 volts. Would that be the reason the meter is not working. Ebay shows that I should use MRB6251.35v. ?

    Hey Dan,
    Thanks for the video. I had a roll developed and out of the 36, maybe 15 were salvageable; and maybe 8 were good to actually use. Had a combination of using the light meter and used an app. Yet some are dark, some were so bright on the film that you can’t even see what the subject was. How accurate would you say the light meter is? For all the photos, I used wither the light meter or light meter app. Not super pleased with that developed roll

    • @DanBullmanPhotography
      @DanBullmanPhotography  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's hard to tell the difference sometimes with speeds that high. There might not be anything wrong with your camera. It might just be that 500 and 1000 both sound the same to your ear. If you want a definite test, try to shoot a few exposures using the same aperture with both 500 and 1000 shutter speed. The 1000 speed should come out slightly darker. If they are identical then it might be worth having your camera looked at by a local shop or person.

    Hey Dan, does the lens effect to light meter? If I don't use the fd lens it will still work or not? THX

    • @DanBullmanPhotography
      @DanBullmanPhotography  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It does, in that the lens communicates your aperture settings to the light meter. So when you adjust your aperture on the lens the light meter adjusts accordingly. You can still meter with older FL lenses if you use stop down metering, which is explained in the camera manual pretty well.

Currently I have a Fuji 400 film in my Canon FTb ql, and with the shutter speed at B and aperture at 5.6, the needles are properly exposed in the center of the light meter.
