Every time I walk past Chanel nowadays, they’re empty. The SAs are on their phones or are talking to each other. I think a lot of people are just annoyed by this constant price increase when the quality of the bags have been declining.

I agree with you. I can afford Chanel. But one of my goals is to never own anything from them. I think they are obnoxious and taking advantage of their customers. Also, i am not trying to impress anyone. In addition, i don’t think their bags are made well.

I agree. My leather strap is unequal and sewn badly.. I am conscious all the time to roll the strap to make sure it stays inside the bag. I watched reviews of people complaining about the chain&leather straps having the same flaw. It makes the bag look cheap.

Growing up, my mother had a few Chanel bags. Back in the days, such bags were to be worn on special occasions and for many year. People didn't buy high end new bags several times a year. I also have a couple. The last Chanel bag I purchased was over 10 years ago. Given the drastic price increase and the quality, I don't often consider Chanel. Take note that it's only the classic bags that are silly expensive. You can still get a Chanel 19 for half the price of the classic flap or 2.55. I don't consider bags as investments because I will never resell but for £10K, I would rather buy a watch or put the money towards another real-estate investment.

  • @kdcm6690
    @kdcm6690 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +17

I think there are so many second hand Chanel bags on the market now that are much cheaper that their strategy won't work, Chanel does not resell for anywhere near the current new bag price, unlike Hermes bags which actually go for higher. But at the end of the day, it gets to a point that even the truly wealthy won't use a bag that screams how much money they spent on it because it makes them look too vulgar for spending that much on a bag. Bags somehow are still not in the same acceptable category for spending your money on as jewellery or watches.

In this day of high crime, the last thing I'd want is to look too rich in many public places.
When your handbag is over $10K, thieves don't just want what's inside your bag. It adds to risk.
I only have one basic, black Chanel shoulder bag, and I'll only use it in safe locations.

Rolling my eyes at the latest Chanel strategy. Their bags aren't appealing to me. Toss in the conspicuous logo and its even more of a turn off. A few years ago about a year before the pandemic, the luxury brands were all putting out hideous plastic bags. One would have been better buying something at Walmart.
The prestige thing doesn't grab me. I love high quality and extremely practical combined that results in elegance. These days it seems that to get what I want, I will need to have someone make the bag for me with my own modifications that avoids the black hole scenario.

Luxury has always been about attaining the unattainable. Wealthy people don’t think about the purchase price because they don’t have to. It’s never been about quality is proportional to price, or material is proportional to price. It’s a status symbol for the wealthy. Has been throughout history. “I am in this strata, and you are not.” As soon as everyone has the bag, people carry fakes, or dupes are made, it defeats the purpose of setting the brand above all others. Just human nature. None of the bags in the luxury category are truly worth the value you are paying for them.. Hermes included. Hermes has literally played a psychological trick on people to entice them to do everything possible to get a bag that costs nothing to make. It’s a very interesting experiment int human psychology.

Anyone who can afford a $12,000 bag without batting an eye will opt for any Hermes over Chanel. Personally, I'd like to see more individual artisans getting noticed for bespoke bags from choosing the leather to unique design to final hand-stitched finish. At one time, I noticed some interesting bespoke from Tanner-Krolle but they seem to have lost their luster and going back to being primarily a British luggage maker to the Royals. I have one of their old designs made in the style of a 15th century money bag, not bespoke but very different.

Great analysis. What are your thoughts on Chanel's 5 year limit on many repairs?I believe Hermes on top of better quality vs. Chanel does not have these limits. I know I'm not alone to say it's a deal breaker to charge 11k for a bag that in 5 years cannot be refurbished completely as needed. It will rebound on them. Chanel & Hermès although heritage brands are very “done”. Old money will not buy into this. Look at someone like India Hicks - goddaughter of King Charles - who favours brands like Tusting or Lalage Beaumont. There’s kind of a reverse snobbery between the real, old-time elites who will distance themselves from ANYTHING that could be regarded as tacky - ie anything that represents an overt display of wealth. So far, Chanel has managed to straddle the rubicon between good taste and trend but they have over extended themselves.

Buying a bag for 10 000 euros that cost let’s be generous 500 to manufacture could be considered vulgar because it’s not intelligent and The company insults your intelligence when the profit margarines are too extreme. You risk being viewed at as the king without clothes. A bag will look sad not fresh just like shoes after a few years if you really use it as well while jewelry can be passed down for generations. People who say a bag is a good investment don’t know what they are talking about. Compared to other investments one can make its a terrible investment.

Hermés has high prices but they have high quality items meanwhile, Chanel makes items that are good not excellent quality and yet they charge 5x the amount for it and that doesn’t make any sense. Before I wanted a Chanel flap as an investment piece but I would look at the second hand ones and the outside looks perfect, but the inside was all dirty and the leather peeling which for Chanel is surprising to see given their luxury status. It’s ridiculous how Chanel is making these price increases on their bags but yet not fixing the main problem- the quality . They’re going to run Chanel into the ground. The first sign of this kind of business declining is their perfume. It’s the thing that produces the most money for them and it’s declining. The quality, longevity, artistry and even the packaging has been downgraded a significant amount. The thing that made Chanel Chanel was the luxury yet attainable price point. Coco set out to make her mark by altering how women dressed in their everyday lives. NOT by catering to a certain. EVERYBODY’s money was green. She’s one of the reasons women were even able to have bank accounts at that time. The point of all the fashion houses was to let anyone turn into the ad girl even if it was just for a night. Hermes who Chanel is trying to chase and copy managed to still maintain this while keeping their quality.

Chanel can possibly survive wth this strategy but they won't grow; they need the aspirational buyer and this is something Lagerfeld understood and exploited massively. But the macroeconomic conditions have changed and nobody wants to be caught out in a pretence of being rich, or being rich and making yourself a target for theft.
Long term Chanel is cooked if they don't supply real quality, this is something they are pretending to do but anyone can see it's cheaply put together from 'gold tone' onwards.

Chanel's bags are not in the same level as Hermés. Chanel mass produces its bags in a scale and fashion just like any other luxury brand. However, Chanel has decided that it wants to shamelessly increase its coveted 2.55 and Classic Flap to Hermés prices despite it's the same bag and same quality as before. Though there have been instances where Chanel's quality control hasn't been the best for the past few years. Even though Hermés products are painfully expensive, they do justify it, because they don't use shortcuts in manufacturing. Hermés could easily mass-produce the Kelly and Birkin by using machines, but they don't, they still make it by hand and by one artisan that takes two weeks to finish, just for one bag.

Thank god I’ve always found Chanel bags ugly. How beautiful leather being perforated by crisscross stitches is aesthetic to some people is beyond me.

Hi Tanner! I have a Vintage Chanel Classic flap bag and I am thinking about selling it, because it is not my style anymore. Do you think the price will keep increasing or do you think now is a good time to sell it, because maybe the prices will drop again. :)

If the quality doesn’t increase, the Uber wealthy won’t pay for it. Especially with the flap bag still being associated with the “I wanna look rich crowd”.

@@aleeback38 without watching his assessment, I'm 100% sure it's not. Know that when Chanel launched it was a few hundred $s. Even if we count inflation and the fact that we are paying for the Chanel prestige is still stupidly over priced in my opinion. If you compare it to a Dior or YSL the gap is significant. But of course this is my personal opinion. 🤷🏼‍♀️

as you said i think Chanel's price increase is to price out those not truly their targeted customers so as to keep the brand's exclusivity. Imagine if Chanel only wants the richest 1% of the population to buy from them and these wealthy people got richer and richer every year (not even COVID would make any impact to them), then it makes sense to have these crazy price hikes every now and then so that only the top tier customers can afford their products. I stopped buying Chanel after Karl passed away. First, they have indeed priced me out.😂 Second, I found that I was more impressed with the brand when Karl was still there. Good for me to save some money. 😉

I went to the PEGAI website to look at the bags his company makes, but I did not see where the bags are made. Does anyone know? Plus, the Quality doesn't look as good as the bag he Destroys. I’m not justifying their prices. Just noticing some issues of comparison of Quality.

I used to think that owning a luxury bag was an unattainable dream, until *amzrepe* told me that this dream is actually very close. The sense of fashion comes not only from the brand, but also from personal matching and attitude.

I do not understand why people still buy Chanel with their rapidly declining and horrible quality. I mean Chanel super fakes are better quality that Chanel.

  • @MrMaxemme

The more they increase the more they are pushing the counterfeit market. If a bag costs £2000 I may think of buying it original, if the superfake is £500 as the difference does not justify it. But if it costs £5000 then I would consider a £1000 superfake a good investment because the price difference is higher and because the superfake producer now have enough budget to source good material and pay for good craftsmanship, reducing the quality gap to something indistinguishable to the vast majority of people.
