This is one of the best informative & useful tutorials on TH-cam. Thank you so much for sharing, much-needed. Cathedral Windows just got a lot easier...😀
That windmill trick you showed I made a quilt over 30 years ago doing that, my back ground is black and I added 12 colored blocks, 5" squares with 4 black windmill points inside the colored 5" squares. The entire outside of the quilt is border is edged with the prarie points also on all 4 sides. As pretty today as the day I made it. I can see it from my chair in the living room. I'm 72 now
Sue, I like the fact that the extra fabric will add more dimension to the block……even more so with quilting. I did see this technique so where else but thanks for your efforts.
Very cute. Many of the designs I'd probably very carefully trim out the extra bottom. Bulk. From there incorporate those into a scrappy or crumb quilt.
I think it is a unique and quick way; however, I, too, have a problem with the fabric waste. Good fabric is expensive, and I try to use all of it I can. I do think this is a great way to make a quilt if you're in a hurry. Thank you for these tips.
I was smiling during theirs laughing time!! Good! Your first block is magical! And all the others! Cuz my shoulder have problem to move and I am not able to cut! Thanks so much! You have a new quilt friend! Me.
a good idea for a cleaner backside; the first one (block in center) because I don't want to waste an extra useable fabric, I will cut out a 4" or 4.5"square in the center 10" square; then position & place 5" square in the center of that "square hole" with pins & do the fold/sew like she does (may use extra time/effort but result: lighter block weight, less clear backside, saved a small fabric).
The fabric waste may be torerable, but those seams can't nest because they can only go in one direction. Now for pillows, and small projects, this would be fine, but I can't imagine trying to quilt a larger project with all those thick intersections.
Oh for goodness sakes. To all you critics out there be thankful someone is taking the time to show instructions to others. I am a newbie to making blocks and really appreciate the info.
I have been a hand quilter since childhood. I bought a sewing machine last year during COVID. Someone said I can use my machine for quilting. This is blowing my mind
I have 3 quilts planed starting them today this seems simple and quick to do i my next quilt after the 3 i want to do all kinds of blocks in one quilt i believe its called a sample quilt i want to do it in matching fabrics and i like the layers seems like it will be warm ans snuggly
With guilting fabric so expensive, this technique seems to be wasteful, besides the top will not be flat because of the added thickness of the folded edges! I like the precuts but I think I will continue with the usual way of piecing them. Thanks for sharing your ideas!
What would you do if you wanted to use several of these blocks, but they don't all finish at the same size, and to cut the larger ones down ruins the corners.
I have to agree with some other comments. Fabric is really expensive and it seems like a waste. I watched a you tube that uses this technique when cutting apart a panel and and/or T-shirt quilts and it works well of your in a hurry and dealing with odd sizes if you don’t mind waiting fabric. Also, it would be very difficult to quilt something made with this technique.

The woman laughing out loud in this video sounds JUST like my mama, gone over 30 years, THANK YOU FOR THIS!
10 inch and 5 inch square sewn together makes a good block strong. Like it. Children's quilts need to be sturdy. Also, your quilt is tough.
Great ideas and explanations! Thank you

Wow! this is fascinating. I am going to try these ideas. I am a fan of precut squares.
Thank you for sharing your talent. -j
This is really neat, but I cant waste the fabric that is underneath , plus later a lot more bulk.
You could trim away the under neath fabric and use it in a crazy quilt pillow or pot holder.
How could a quilting machine quilt those with turned up edges?
Joyce Weaver I agree, it would also make it heavier
I like a heavier quilt. 😁

That's what I was thinking! How do you quilt that? Especially with those open pockets! Help, we need Angela's quilting tips for this!

This technique is called fold and sew and was developed by Peg Spradlin.
Cool!!1
Nice indeed
Cut the back fabric out and no waste.

I don't understand why you would use polka dots with that beautiful floral fabric.
there is alot of waste but brilliant!!
