  • The West Montreal river beings near the village of Shining Tree in Northeastern Ontario. Paddlers can travel for several days downstream to the Montreal River proper, traversing the northeastern edge of Temagami.
    For our whitewater day trip, we paddled 23km of the middle section from Michiwakenda to Houston Lake. At mid-May flows, all of the rapids on this stretch can be run by skilled paddlers. Most are class two with the odd class one and a single challenging technical class 3. Portage trails are available to bypass the major sets if required.
    This video gives the paddler a POV run of all the major sets encountered on this stretch of river.

    As a northern Michigander, I love these videos! Please please please do a video on the essentials of canoe paddling, my girlfriend and I are self taught and I known the proof is in the pudding of the skill level of you two; real world experience that’s reliable!

      Hey thanks! What type of essentials? Flat water? Open water, etc? Lot's of different tips and skills. Could maybe work it into a future video. Thanks for watching!

      Explore The Backcountry I’d say class III canoeist skills would be good for the average rivers in the northern regions! Strokes such as the j stoke, pitch stroke, pry and draw stroke etc; an average list of the strokes you guys would use on a river that ranges from class 1-3 rapids at moderate speeds!!

    Holy heck, bud. That was awesome! Incredible shots! Whenever I have filmed myself in big whitewater it comes out looking like the tiniest swift. You've really got the right angles to put the real experience into the video. Well done.

    Having a warm place in my heart I was thinking of the more westerly Montreal River that flows into Lake Superior 70 miles north of the Sault.

    Being from the west island of Montreal, this title had me totally confused for a couple seconds.

      Ha, there's quite a few Montreal Rivers in Ontario. Even not being from Montreal it can get confusing! lol

    I'm from Texas and paddle in warm weather mostly. Started watching your videos as I'm heading to Upstate NY for the summer heading back when snow comes. So I will be paddling in colder waters. What gear are you wearing... looks light and comfortable? My kayak vest is fine with a bib but not in my canoe :(

      We are wearing Level 6 Drysuits. My PFD is a Salus Proto. Really nice fit and feel!

    how would this compare to the Opeongo river in Algonquin is this the better day trip?

    • @ExploreTheBackcountry
      @ExploreTheBackcountry  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I haven't paddled the lower stretch, but I hear it's a wild ride. We had actually planned on it 2 years back. Based off the map and what I've seen online, Opeongo at high flows is more pushy with lengthy sets. West Montreal is more pool and drop short sets. The next 10km of the WM we didn't run apparently has some bigger sets. Not sure how runnable they are in an open boat though. I would say Lower Opeongo > West Montreal in terms of whitewater though.
