  • In this Video I go over why I went from a 2021 Yamaha MT09 Base model to a 2022 Yamaha MT09 SP.
I recently sold my 2018 R1 and my 2021 Yamaha MT09 base model to get this bad boy and trust me I do not regret it at ALL! Watch to find out why.

I have been riding 43 years and many long trips and have never got sore/tired hand syndrome from the throttle. When I'm on stretches where throttle speeds vary only slightly the throttle is held/controlled 90% by light pressure from the palm with fingers relaxed. I have the sp (it's great) but am certain I would be happy with the base model knowing I was trading off superior cornering control for a softer more comfortable ride quality that is better for the majority of relaxed ride mode. Always trade-offs.

If I use my palm it cuts the blood flow in my hand and it goes numb.

FYI: CC can be cancelled in many different ways. EX: brakes, the on/off button on left hand side or rolling the throttle slightly forward. And the CC is a god-send for long riding, which is my current application for my SP. :)

You done well as there is no comparison between that base model, and the SP!
Some of the cheapest made "adjustable" forks I've ever torn apart. Ditto for the rear shock. I upgraded mine to the Andreani front, ktech razor r rear and it is much better but still not as good as the sp.
Because the forks are so long there is no easy swap from a gsxr or zx10.
Both of which have in the past used the same fork design on the sp.
I weigh 200 w full gear and it was dangerously soft in the front. Not many online testers have mentioned this for some reason.
You are 100% correct about the finish as well. The base Raven black looks like it was sprayed with dollar store spray black.
I was so disappointed I picked the bike up at dealer I brought it straight home, tore it down and refinished it in the storm fluo colors.
And no, oem cruise control can't be added to the base model without spending several grand (even if parts are available through Yamaha)
I really wish I'd waited and found an sp for that reason alone.
Anyone following this channel on the fence about which model to buy, the sp is worth every penny over the base model.
It will also hold its value better down the road because the base model suspension gives out very quickly.
Ride safe, and keep the great content coming!!!

@@yamayari8351 I contemplated selling my base model for an SP until I rode a friends. TBH…I didn’t like it on the street. I’m a light guy so @ 150lbs with gear on the suspension was just too stiff for normal street riding. I’d have to end up swapping springs to adjust the rate anyway so I decided to keep my base model and get a custom tuned suspension for my specs. Ohlins just released the blackline version of the SP rear shock and it can be setup from the factory with rider specific springs and valving. I still love the all black version of the bike so I’d like to keep that theme. As far as cruise control, I have zero interest on a bike like the MT. That’s just me and to each their own but when I ride this bike, the fun of it is feeling the torque from twisting the throttle. I’ve done some pretty long weekend rides and never had my hands tire out enough to justify wanting that feature. Happy to see you loving your new SP though! It really is a great bike 🤘🏼

Daily rode a 2017 base mt09 for 4 years, never really found the suspension an issue and it stayed strong through multiple slams from wheelies and offroading. Only time I found the suspension lacking was when hitting a pothole mid-turn and things would get hairy. Not sure why people lose their mind over the base suspension. Skill issue maybe?

I have the base model and I found the bike a little too soft on stock settings.
So I gave the rear 1 notch more on the preload and 1/4 turn in on the rebound.
It has made the bike more stable and confidence inspiring in the corners without totally ruining the ride comfort.
