I did the same test last night. Two trangia stoves and my new Pathfinder. Trangia had higher flames, but burned out in under half an hour. Pathfinder burned out after about one hour forty five min. Of course it had more fuel. I was mainly testing flame height. Both had their strong points. If you want a quick boil then go trangia. If you need sustained flame for slower cooking go Pathfinder. I don't think you can say which is better until you do a longevity test. Both seem well built. BTW.... The Pathfinder must have wicking in the inner wall. I looked down three holes when new and saw some kind of fiber. Don't think it could draw a flame on perimeter without wicking to supply vapor.

Thank you for doing the PF & Trangia side-by-side review. Especially since you're starting out with new burners for each. Fewer variables that can affect results. Good point about grades of SS. Applies to corrosion resistance. "Cheap", for lack of a better term, SS will rust/corrode. Thus, quality is important in situations where the SS is supposed to be non-reactive.
Suspect the slow bloom time, reported by others on the PF, is due to their ambient temperature compared to your lab. One way to confirm, may be to set burners & a bottle of fuel in a pan of cold water (or a refrigerator). Once chilled to x degrees (say 35F) compare bloom times. While I could easily be wrong, suspect mass & metal type, in relationship to ambient temperature has a direct bearing on performance comparison between these 2 burners.
Looking forward to seeing what your next tests reveal. Appreciate your time & effort, that's for sure.

    Morning Hiram
I just wanted to ask if you know why the Trangia burners are Known as "mini Trangias" in the USA. Here in the UK we just call them Trangia burners and I've never heard of any larger Trangia burners.

    • @ebikecnx7239
      @ebikecnx7239 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Because of the larger military version by Trangia and SVEA from the 1960s Swedish army mess kit set.

@@ebikecnx7239 Hiram calls em 'mini' because the first one he got was part of the 'mini Trangia cookset'. It's not the burner that is the mini, it's the set. He just kept calling it the mini out of habit, but there is no such thing as a Trangia mini burner. The Swedish army burner is not a Trangia product.

I suspect the size, material and fuel capacity of the PF burner will keep the small flame from being able to heat all that mass up to get the same flame of the Trangia. A can of Sterno will burn for a long time but doesn't boil water in a timely manner. Perhaps the PF stove will be more similar to Sterno performance than Trangia performance. If that makes any sense. Thanks for the great job testing these burners Hiram you rock.

Hiram, received mine a couple-three days after seeing your initial video - there were a few strings of unknown material sticking out of the holes. There is a liner of some sort in there. The strings burned off on initial lighting. Today I'll do my sixth burn. Mine seems to get a little faster bloom each time I light it. Had it blow out once from the wind with the "stove" off - never with the "stove" on. After a lengthy burn - the base gets *very* hot, just takes longer than my trangias.

very interesting comparision, thank You Hiram!
that deep yellow flame colour in the first moments could indicate any extra carbon content what may result from any manufacturing residues at a burner (maybe traces of any oils or so). If so it should disappear soon resp. not show up in future.
This long burning time doesn't say much to me as long as I cannot compare the resulting heat transfer to the liquids to be boiled. So far I guess the Trangia has much more flame and heat output, so I expect also a longer time to boil in case of the PF stove. But there are still so many unknown factors since the burner only doesn't make the setup ... means pot stand and so on are also important. That's why I'm looking forward to see Your boiling test ... ;-)
Btw to fix the pot stand around the stove is a great idea, I know and like it from the Swiss M71. But what I miss on the PF pot stand are those noses or flaps of the M71 stand, which allow to put there also smaller diameter things such as e.g. metal bottles without using further sticks or grills etc.

I'd also like to see a leak test done on it. Maybe fill with fuel, and tip them both upside down on a paper towel or something or weigh them both before and after being upside down for a week or so. See if any fuel slowly leaks out and evaporates before it's noticed leaking.

The coming up to "bloom" times were not that different, because the Trangia had burned for several seconds before you lit the Pathfinder stove. I have that same model of Pathfinder spirits stove and mine lights relatively quick...just like your result or better. I also like the larger capacity reservoir of the Pathfinder stove.

I think if there was any real benefit to a larger steel burner, trangia would probably have made one 30 years ago. Trangia is the gold standard. There are lighter burners, hotter burners and more efficient burners, but few which offer such a well thought out combination of compromises, it's very hard to beat IMO.

Perhaps you should measure the fuel level in distance from the top as opposed to a measurement in ounces. I think that would result in a better comparison of the two burners. If two ounces puts the fuel level at a 1/2" from the top on the Trangia put enough fuel in the stainless knock off to bring the fuel level up to a 1/2" from the top.

Hi Hiram- Regarding the improvement in performance after a few burns... Sometimes when manufacturing a woven cloth material, they apply a 'sizing' (think of something like starch) to assist the handling of the woven material. Perhaps the several burns have successfully wicked out all of the sizing in the cloth (out with the alcohol and burned up) leaving the wovem material more open or clean for improved wicking?

  • @ryanv7075
    @ryanv7075 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

As far as the quality of the stainless steel, I have heard the 300 series has less nickel than the 400 series. The nickel inhibits the magnetic properties of the iron, thus the more nickel, the less magnetic the metal is. Nickel is less corrosive, thus the "better quality" label for 400 SS.

Have decided mine is a keeper, primarily due to the very long burn time. Won't toss my trangia's but liking this one's handiness when it comes time to set a spell and relax. (I want quality time more than distance traveled). In California this year, seems like we have spent more time under campfire restrictions than not. Of course, now I'm going to be interested in a source for replacement "O" rings of the type in it - looks almost like some I have seen in gasoline cans.

  • @jaddkay1

The Trangia burned up its fuel faster because it had a much larger flame, whereas the Pathfinder took allot longer to burn up its fuel because of its smaller flame. This probably translates into faster cook times for the Trangia?????
I'm also wondering if the Pathfinders size, its stainless steel make up, and less holes acts like a regulator on the flame.

Hi Again Hiram. Could you try a test with only a small amount of alcohol in the stove. I believe this stove is designed to hold enough fuel for a two day trip or longer. Thanks.

    • @galenpatchett3560

In my experience, lower fuel in the pathfinder actually burns better than when it's full. I believe that's because the large amount of empty space along with the heat in a pathfinder stove causes the alchohol to evaporate and burn easier when the fuel reaches the burn ports. Also it takes along time to heat up the alchohol enough to evaporate but with lower fuel there is less material to heat up

Hiram; the boil test will tell the truth about this stove.
The person commenting that the PF took 6 minutes to bloom; I know where they got that because I watched the same video on another YouTubr channel.
What those people did was just pour alcohol in the stove and light it. You let the alvohol sit for a couple hours before lighting it.
With the speed it bloomed14-20 seconds It would be a safe bet that the Stove has a wick inside.
The stoves I make have no wicks and if you light the fuel inside the stove and wait for a bloom; the stoves take 17-22 seconds to bloom, and 1/4 oz aluminum gets hot a lot faster than 4-8 OZs of stainless steel.
Would you weigh the stove empty? I have not been able to find that piece of info.

@@robertmaxwell3220 I own both. The army surplus are no longer in production, and yes more than a little hard to find. But that doesn’t make the standard burner everyone uses, which is overall a more flexible and arguably better burner featuring all the innovations through the years, and comes with the standard trangia kits, a “mini” version all of a sudden.
It’s in the main production line and has been in it’s current form for decades and decades. Nobody calls it a mini and it was never advertised as such.
The army one was produced from 64-76 and was always an aside to the development of the main product line, which still existed during those years.
If anything the Swedish army version is the odd one out, and people including you tend to call it “the bigger army version” because it’s noticeably big compared to standard to suit specific tactical military purposes which may not generally be an advantage.
If I remember correctly you can’t even fit it properly into most of the standard products.

Not a very good, out of the box showing for the Pathfinder burner. Maybe it will get better, but I doubt it will improve very much with use. It might help it to have some thermal feedback from a cooking pot and windscreen though.
The size bothers me a bit. It's too large to work with many of the cooking systems designed to use Trangia style burners. So looks like you're stuck using that cheap perforated steel pot stand or building something yourself.
I'm also skeptical about how it will preform in cold weather, although if it does have an internal wick it might do better than I'm assuming. If there isn't any wicking, I bet it's a real chore to start on a cold morning.
Did you say it came without any instructions? I'm wondering how they recommend extinguishing the flame with a simmer ring/snuffer. Maybe you're just supposed to blow it out.
