    Hiram, I´m a former army captain that used to work in the Swedish arctic brigade. One thing we taught the soldiers was a variant of your "lid burner" at the end of the video. Take the lid of the Trangia burner, remove the rubber ring and add some fuel in the lid. Dig/scrape a small hole in the ground so that the top of the lid is about flush with the ground. Light the fuel and then place the rest of the Trangia set above it. The burner will go into "after burner mode". It will use more fuel and one need to be wary of the much larger flame. We pretty much only used it if we wanted to quickly boil water.
    As you know, the main issue in the winter is the temperature of the fuel. In our kits we had one large 1l fuel bottle and one small bottle, like a nip(?) flask. That was meant to be worn inside our clothing to warm up the fuel. Worked well, but we seldom wore it that way for obvious "military" reasons. No reason to not do it for civilian use, at least when one nears dinner time. :)
    Just wanted to share some anecdotes. :)

      Spill a bit liquid outside of the Trangia and start the fire. That is far enough of pre-heating. The burner is that cheap that you can afford after 30/50 usage a new one. But till - 20 C there is no pre-heating at all.

    • @jepulis6674
      @jepulis6674 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Candle works too. But warm liquid is a lot safer to play around with. Even -10C alcohol is a bit cold if you spill some on fingers. -30C and you could lose a finger if at remote location.

      @pedroclaro7822 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jepulis6674 don’t you mean candle is safer than the liquid fuel?
      Personally I have a DIY Kojin stove. Só thing I can put it right under the trangia. I light the bottom one with the simmer ring fully close on the trangia - only a little vapor evaporates and I light that. When the bottom runs out just remove the simmer acessory and cook and repeat if needed.

    I’ve basically just invented this idea today! Was thinking of writing to trangia to say ‘why don’t you make one of these?’. Then I stumble on this video and feel a bit stupid!

    Hi Hiram,
    I saw a guy on TH-cam making a wick of toilet paper (rolled it as s thin wick) and lighted it in the middle of the Trangia. It was in minus temperature and it worked flawlessly.
    In this case you don't need a winterburner at all. To isolate between snow/ice and the burner is a good idea with any alcohol stove I should think.

    Never noticed grooves on one before... I'm sure you have tried this but I use a 2" disc of carbon felt under it with a "highly modified" Westwind for large pot/skillet. It's not a MoJo but works way better that the unmodified version. Less of a heat sink. Thanks Hiram!BTW, found the winter attachment version on amazon for 22 bucks.

    I use a gas storm lighter in winter to preheat the spirit burner to allow it to vapour and burn better

  • @jayheaddaaa
    @jayheaddaaa 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    when i am out in winter for more than 2 or 3 nights in the norwegian mountains, i use an old can to preheat the trangia burner. i take some tea lights with me, 1-2 for a day. the can is the size that the trangia burner fits exactly into it like into the original stove so it can hang into the tin can. i made some holes into the can at two different levels, so the flame of a tea light has enough air to burn. and then i use to trangia burners, and while one is burning to melt snow/boil the water the other one gets preheated over the tea light can. so u never have any problems to light the alcohol. and if you have to melt a lot of snow u can work very easy with it. the other point is, u have a bit of light and warmth in the tent with the tea lights.

    Here in China, you can buy a sort of electrical heat mat which works off a USB battery bank- it's designed more for gas canisters, which have their own problems when it goes below 0c, but I reckon it would work. Keep the battery in a pocket so it doesn't go flat in the cold, obviously. We've never needed it- coldest we ever camped in was -6c here in NE China, but might grab one if/ when we repatriate to the UK.

    Can't you just add some alcohol onto the indented ring on the top of the trangia stove to prime it? It always works for me to add alcohol to the flat portion, light it, and it blooms pretty quick. that is a happy dog!

    The winter burner will work with the triangle but you can’t pull it down as much and it doesn’t work as well. But let’s not forget you can warm the burner in your hands.

    try it with the Redcamp pot stand.
    The lip between the 'burner cone' and the outside of the trangia body has a slight depression.
    place a few drops of alcohol on that groove and light it.
    Should accomplish the same preheating.

    Save yourself the weight and the hassle and just add a little extra fuel around the outside rim to pre heat the burner I live in Scotland it’s alwayst cold here my burner works fine I’ve had I’d down to -10c. With no lighting or burning issues

    you could use the mojo if you prop the corners up on somethin solid that should give you the space needed, i'm sure there's a couple of rocks that would work laying around camp?

    If you use the yellow bottle of HEET fuel line antifreeze in the winter with a trangia or esbit burner does it work better than regular alcohol or does the type of fuel not matter???

    • @dsbdnet
      @dsbdnet 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I tested yellow heet at 15F last night and it worked great in the trangia. yellow heet will be my winter trangia fuel. fyi - my experiment at 15f with white gas in the trangia was a failure. white gas had too big of a flame.

    • @martin.feuchtwanger
      @martin.feuchtwanger 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yellow Heet is just an expensive brand of "regular alcohol" which is properly called methyl hydrate (aka methanol). See outdoors.stackexchange.com/a/20057/11563

    • @markholm7050
      @markholm7050 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Martin Feuchtwanger Three types of alcohol are commonly available, in the USA. I don’t know about the rest of the world.
      1. Ethanol, aka ethyl alcohol. This comes in different versions.
      a. Denatured alcohol and the confusingly named methylated spirits. These contain something to make them toxic, usually a few % methanol.
      b. grain alcohol including the brand name”Everclear”. These contain 10% water.
      2. Isopropanol aka Isopropyl alcohol
      a. Sold as a disinfectant with 9% or 30% water added.
      b. Red HEET contains 1.5% other unidentified, chemicals.
      3. Methanol aka methanol, Yellow HEET is methanol.
      These have different boiling temperatures and vapor pressure curves. Methanol has the lowest boiling point and generates the most vapor at any temperature. Isopropanol has the highest boiling point and generates the least vapor at any temperature. Ethanol is in between. Adding water causes any of these to generate less alcohol vapor at any temperature, and of course water does not burn. In addition, evaporating water absorbs some of the heat generated by burning alcohol.
      Based on their fundamental characteristics, methanol should be the easiest to light and quickest to “bloom” in a Trangia at very low temperatures. It is possible the methanol makes too much vapor for a Trangia to operate well at very high ambient temperatures. I haven’t seen anyone address the question of suitable Trangia fuel at very high ambient temperature.

      Yes sir RedCamp mini alcohol stove. I have her is exactly the same but then they start talking about they don’t know what’s inside they know what’s inside the trangia because someone opened it but nobody dares to open the redcamp because I’m afraid that it’s going to be the same and people are very fanatic of the trangia.

      I am in the market to buy an alcohol stove and a canister stove and I have to make a wise decision because I’m on a budget with disability and I see that the redcamp mini alcohol stove offers a stand and a handle for the cap in other words more for the money. I mean if I have to buy the trangia because this is a better one then I would do but nobody has been able to demonstrate that the trangia is better And no one talks about the cracks they just keep buying them
