    I just modded my Reddragon Kumara the other day, and as a tip to strip those annoying thin wires that don't strip cleanly with the wire stripper, make two or three shallow cuts into the insulation with a box cutter or any other sharp knife, then pull the insulation with your nails. The wire will strip cleaning without loosing strands. If your keyboard has RGB and you use it on all the time I'd be careful soldering the red cable because a bad connection (i-e more resistance) could make it overheat or make your keyboard malfunction due lack of current.

    Fun fact: my Das Keyboard 4's non-detachable cable is actually detachable! Internally it just has a standard USB 3 micro-B connector plugged into a daughterboard.
    So with a $6 adapter cable I now have a USB-C Das Keyboard that still supports USB 3

    It's C for common, its a term we use in electronics since its a common area to put your ground or negative in.
    I EXTREMELY recommend putting hot glue or epoxy to secure it or over time you might yank the breakout board accidentally

  • @Tentenszx

    I got a budget mechanical keyboard that is really valuable to me not in terms of price. The keyboard was from my girlfriend. I went home I went home from school (I'm in College) and just saw my keyboard's USB plug dented and flat. I tried to fix it but it fits too tightly now when being plugged to my laptop which I am afraid might break when plugging and unplugging. It's not a detachable cord so I am definitely going to try this out since the connections and soldering seems simple to me since I am studying electronics engineering. I just needed the guidance of this video for assurance lol. Trying this soon once my Type C female breakout board arrived!

    • @Tentenszx
      @Tentenszx ปีที่แล้ว

      Update: Well like I said, I'm an ECE student so it was a bit simple for me and of course it works as I expected. But since I do not have shrink tubes for now, what I did is is since I stripped the four wires a bit long and my type C female breakout board does not have a hole, the excess stripped wires was covered with electrical tape to avoid any contact to each other which may cause shorting. And then wrapped the four again as whole with electrical tape again this time, to be secured. As I do not have a putty like what I'm planning in the first place, I just melted extra black plastics from random things using my extra soldering iron. That way, the breakout board is intact and looks good since I used plastic and just did a bit of sanding

    • @goodjihad
      @goodjihad  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can solder it to the same ground black wire or to the casing of the usb-c female. It is a shield wire. You must have soldered the wrong black wire to the gnd. Try the other one and it should work and check your pinout 5v is typically red and black is typically gnd. If there is an extra black which looks thicker and is adjacent to the gnd wire it's the shield wire. You can probe it out with a multimeter to confirm.

    "I have so many tools that only I use"
    Now that you've recommended them, that's no longer the case. ;)
    Sorry, stupid joke. I know you meant "I only use" rather than "only I use".
    Edit: Also I like the recommended USB soldering iron. Although, the pinecil is about the same price, goes hotter, and seems to have more features for the display/os. On the other hand, pinecil's are all out of stock until sometime later this month, which is a bummer.

  • @BowsettesFury
    @BowsettesFury 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    What would happen if I grounded cc/cc1 to the same zero ohm resistor with in the keyboard? Came factory with it on the ground wire on the left board.
    Some have said USB C needs a 5k ohm resistor in series with CC1 to generate 5v. But if it’s already populated on the board internally I’m not seeing the reason behind this and why the mod isn’t working at all.

    • @BowsettesFury
      @BowsettesFury 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Update: with the zero ohm resistor in series the lights actually came on but no key inputs.

    would it be the same general idea if I wanna do this to my corsair keyboard? I don't really use it so I wanna mod it as a fun little project but I'm just wondering if making it detachable would require an extra step due to the usb pass through

    • @ntsbuild4875
      @ntsbuild4875 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Corsair keyboards have a separate pcb and cable for the passthrough. You can just ignore it but you would lose the passthrough.

  • @rubenpoveda9254
    @rubenpoveda9254 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Im going to try this in my MSI Vigor GK80. I dont know if it would work properly because this model has a cable with two USB connectors to allow an USB passthrough on the keyboard. As long as the keyboard works is fine, I dont mind if I lose the USB passthrough capability. My main keyboard is a 60% (modded Anne Pro 2) and I would love to be able to change it easily when I need a full keyboard. I have my keyboard connected with an usb c coiled cable with gx12 aviator connector and it would be awesome if I could use the same cable to connect my two keyboards as I please. I've ordered the adafruit usb c breakboard and a jst ph 5 pin connector with 30 cm of cable to try if it works without damaging the original cable.

    For the Adatafruit board, what wires would you put in what connections because there's
    CC2, SBU1, D+, D-, CC1, SBU2, VBUS, GND? And what would you do for the empty connections?

    • @goodjihad
      @goodjihad  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      GND - Black/GND,
      VBUS = V+ = +5V/Red,
      D+ = Green/D+,
      D- = White/D-
      You could use the CC pins to enable C to C compatability if the adafruit board has the resistors on it.
