All the best Man Cave. Quite an injury or injuries ya got ya self there. Shall pray for your recovery. Hopefully you’re in good hands when ya get back to your digs. Cheers.
Really sorry to see you got injured - will miss you great bike reviews. Hope they return very soon. It was wonderful to meet you at the ABR - thanks for being so friendly - it must be hard when strangers want to have a chat! I guess we feel we know you but you don’t know us. Get well soon.
I met Tony at last years and this years ABR festival, a nicer man you could not hope to meet. So friendly, like you say, we sort of know him, he has no idea who we are.
I hope you feel better soon. That was a really interesting video by the way. Riding in fourth gear to make it smoother and that you balance more with your body and feet - that was new to me. I’d like to try that! Your videos are always interesting and I learn a lot watching them. I’m looking forward to seeing you fit and filming again in a few months time. All the best.
Wishing you a speedy recovery Tony 👍! Sadly I had to give up on my off road adventures a few years ago, just not enough Ace wraps to hold my old battered body together 😆, and at 67 now I don’t heal up as quick after an “off” as I did as a young man 🤪.
Great video as usual. 👍 I’m hoping to do that course when time and money allow. I’ve got the ATAS and want to see what it can do and more importantly what I can do. Sorry to hear you’ve hurt yourself. I hope you have a speedy recovery. 👍
I’ve been there twice this year, loved it, had random dry weather, the instructors are all decent, I was very lucky with the weather, was a different location to where you went. Lots of including myself didn’t realise how tiring it can be, and a few should have picked the smaller more manageable bike, because of the lessons learned there I had an even better time at the ABR this year and a massive confidence boost with my ability’s, I still have more to learn, practice practice practice. Hopefully your back up an onto it in no time.
You are not the only one either to go down there, that bit almost felt like ice. I remember trying to stop on the hill bit after the tunnel as the group had bunch and sliding backwards
We spoke yesterday on your short video. Your crash was different to mine. Looked the same but my leg under the bike spiral fractured. I am 15 days out from accident. Just fibula. No more blood thinner injections and the cast was off at day 10. In the fibrous stage of fixing now so pain is really manageable and I am more mobile. Doctor said keep the plastic boot off. Physio said keep it on. Its off! Definitely helps with it off. Its still massive but movement and feeling returning. Good luck with your tib and fib.
Thanks for the info. I'm two weeks in plaster now, and i'm getting fed up with the injections, my stomach looks like a pin cushion ;) Pain isnt too bad so i'm hoping I can shed the cast in a couple of weeks, but my fib was a little displaced, but luckily not a compound fracture.
Another great video Tony like the thought of learning new bike skills will think very seriously about doing this course myself. Sorry about the poor taste comment surrounding the status of the bike, I was only pulling your leg oooppps done it again. Stay safe 😂😂 Robin
That looks a great weekend, how you ride and narrate at the same time still amazes me. I hope you get better soon, put me down for a plaster signing £5.00 a go. 🤔
Hi Tony 👋... really was looking forward to seeing this footage (sorry no pun intended) after the abr, I got a little trail bike (I sent you the pic, lol ... no it wasn't a hint to get a smaller bike after your mishap 😂!!) So I have been looking for tips and guides and things I can do to improve my off road riding 👍... this place looks incredible!!! ... stunning backdrop to the trails .. I just wonder if id cope with the Africa twin .. being a vertically challenged variety .. anyhoo, hope you're on the mend.. really enjoyed this video .. brilliant info and well edited as always ✨️💯.. cheers deb and Ian
@@mancavemoto arh.. OK.. I'll watch it again . . dunno why i missed that .. thanks, that's good to know 👍 .. and good riding btw , some of those trails looked quite challenging
After your unfortunate accident I have decided that my 500lb plus v85tt will not tackle anything tougher than gravel. Having dropped it once in the middle of nowhere and just missing a good hernia picking it up I have come to the conclusion that for me a 300lb dual sport is more fun on the trail. Get well soon.
Sorry to hear of your injury. Hope you heal 100% asap. Could you say something about the boots you were wearing & whether they prevented a more serious injury or whether they contributed to the off? Slippery roots are tricky!
Thanks Oliver, I was wearing my Rev'it Discovery GTX boots, which are a more Adventure Touring style boot. I like them because they offer comfort and a good feel on the pegs/controls. But they certainly offer up as much protection as an MX boot. But having said that, the twisting action would have happened with any boot, and arguably a much stiffer one would have transferred the force into my knee. as painful as its been, fractures heal quicker than ACL injuries.
I’m on a Tiger 900. Been running the Dunlop Trailmax Missions. Not sure what they’re rated, but they’re great on pavement, not too reassuring on gravel. I was after the Raids, but I’m on a GT Pro with a 19” front wheel and the narrowest I could find was a 120. I’m running a 90 and want to stick with it. Let me know if a 100/90-19 is out there. I”d love to try them. Ended up with Bridgestone AX41s. Beautiful off road but far from ideal on pavement. Extremely noisy and my front end feels pretty vague.
Really unfortunate accident there Tony. Should heal fine, you’ll need to build up nice and steady with a wobble board (I’m an Osteopath!). Course looked amazing though, great fun! Thank you👍
Great review Tony. I’ve gone from bikes where I can flat foot to a cb500x where I am only 1 inch shorter inseam that you , but it has taken some getting used to and made me slightly anxious . I commute in central London so I’m thinking this course may build my confidence up - what do you think? Real shame about your injury, hope for a speedy recovery- really enjoy your content - best of luck .
Nice video Tony, it looks like a great training experience. Are those trails just for the training school or can anyone ride them..? I'm a big fan of the Raid's..about to order a new rear, they are super tyres for the T7. By the way you described the day as ' cracking ' ...your poor ankle!! Glad your on the mend, cheers Steve
Cheers, yes, its a good one. Most of it is on private land, but there are a few 'BOATS' included. Where i filmed the view and talked about the tyres is on a byway
Prompt rétablissement Mister Tony! I've just bought an Africa Twin AS DCT 2021 and at slow speed in town the heat on my legs (thigh) is almost unbearable. How is it at off road speed?
Merci! It’s fine, I think the heat management is good. I guess we rarely get the temps in the UK where I’ve noticed a lot of heat that’s caused any problems?
@@mancavemoto Here in Montréal by a 31°C, I had the chance to test ride a 2024 for a couple of hours. I can't explain why but my 2021 is hotter for my legs 🤔
Don't we have to change some electronics settings such as TCS to Gravel, ABS off, Etc... I had to do all this on V-Strom 800de and it really makes a big difference
Yes, we spend the two days in ‘off-road’ mode and as I was riding the DCT, it was manual mode also. We then just adjusted the level of traction and wheelie control depending on the terrain we were riding.
@@mancavemoto awesome, I also turned off Quickshift and it all really makes sense to have those electronic thingy turn off when you are out in the jungle
I wouldn’t feel daft for breaking your ankle on a seemingly easy section - I broke my lower tib and fib quite badly after a simple spill at low speed on easy terrain - just bad luck. That was after I’d been fairly confidently negotiating very steep uphill / downhill off camber / rutted rooty, very rough terrain. Had to take around 6 months off before doing anything on two wheels. Do the physio religiously; you will also lose a lot of muscle mass in your leg quite quickly so take time to build it up before getting on a moto again. Do lots of cycling when you can. Good luck
I think its always the slow simple ones that cause problems. Thanks for the info, I'm going to try and get back as quickly as i can, which may mean quite a bit of physio. I've got my eye on an e-bike to help me get back into it and build up the strength
Sounds good , any bike will do once you’re given the ok to push on. You might be given an exercise plan with resistance band exercises - they will help too.
I think your little off tells you everything you need to know about your average 50/50 tyres. If you're lacking in skills then for me the dumbest thing you can do is put 50/50 tyres on your adv bike - you were on just a very simple bit of trail but because the blocks on those Dunlops are quite big they don't penetrate far into the dirt and won't hook, which means as soon as it get loose and wet you are in the lap of the gods with 230kg swinging about trying to find traction. I think you really need to go for at least something like Motoz Rallz or MItas Enduro Trail XTs, or possibly the full on Dunlop rally tyres. Be nice to know what boots you had on, guessing it wasn't proper off-road boots as you've done-in your ankle. Well heal fast fella, maybe you'll be back on ya bike in no time as you have a DCT! Thanks, Mike
Cheers Mike, but where the incident happened was an old tarmac road with max 4/5mm of mud/silt/moss on top, and it had started raining a little earlier. A more aggressive tyre wouldn’t have made much, if any difference as there was nothing to ‘dig’ into, it was tarmac underneath. The tyres dealt with all the conditions and surfaces we rode over the two days including deeper mud. If the track had been a little wider I would have had a little more room to correct it, as I almost had it straightened up before making contact. I was wearing Rev’it Discovery adventure boots, so not as protective as an MX boot. The injury happened because either a rock, root of branch grabbed my foot and twisted it round. An MX could have made a difference, but it wasn’t a crush injury. The hospital said that a very stiff boot would most likely have transferred the twisting force to my knee, which could have resulted in an injury that would take much much longer to heal. It was just one of those freak accidents, another half a metre forward or back could have meant my foot not catching anything! Sadly as it’s my right leg the DCT will make no difference, but I hope to be back on it asap. Thanks for your get well wishes. Cheers Tony
😱Get well soon and thanks for this lovely report
Wishing you a speedy recovery Tony. Look forward to seeing you back on the bikes.
