Historical note: This type music was relegated to the saloon because its composers were black and not allowed to play in the big concert halls of the time. Rag Time music had a more respected following in Europe by the European composers than it had in America with its silly Jim Crow laws. History kind of repeated itself 50 years later when many blues artists went to Europe and found a huge following...that later became the British Invasion.

What I love about this recording is how respectable the tempo is. A lot of people think you should play ragtime as fast as possible because it’s “impressive”. It makes it sound tacky and sloppy. Good work!

  • @hnnymn

Well done! Perfect tempo, nice clarity, without sacrificing the playfulness of this one. It reminds me of “The Easy Winners” - both are rare Joplin compositions of pure carefree joyousness without a hint of sadness or regret. I imagine Joplin wrote them during a happy uncomplicated time in his life, having found love, recognition, and a measure of wealth. But Joplin's nature was not given to endless sunshine.
Your performance of this one is as good as I've heard. Much better than Rifkin's, which is idiosyncratically slow (however, I generally view Rifkin as the gold standard of Joplin players).
Both you and Rifkin feel the need to accent the A♭ (bar 18) in the descending bassline at the end of the first strain. I don't like this at all. That note is so delicious in part because it is so far out of the key; it stands out on its own. If anything, it should be 𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘳emphasized.

I don’t mean to rain on your parade, but the king of ragtime didn’t enjoy a whole lot of carefree uncomplicated times in his life. As an African American living in the reconstruction era life was not easy, despite being a prolific musician. Despite record breaking sales he had continuous financial challenges and died relatively young of syphilis.

Now the curtain is going up
The Entertainer is taking a bow
Does a dance step and sings a song
Even gets all the audience to sing along
Yes he knows just what he must do
Knows how to bring down the house when he's through
Snappy patter and jokes, he knows what pleases the folks
The Entertainer, the star of the show
It was in vaudeville that he was on the bill
With all the singers, dancers, acrobats, and clowns
There was a dancing bear, even a dog act there
And a comedian who never let 'em down
But when he came on to do his favorite song
He really wowed them in the cities and the towns
They came from near and far
    To see the vaudeville star
    The Entertainer
Now the curtain is going down

Downloaded a tutorial for it. Once Again, Thank You for your educational videos, including all the ones which show your wrist motions ,hand shapes and your ease of finger gestures.
In this rendition, Im particulary interested or drawn to your Left Hand movements.
Your LH is kind of hypnotic as it swings in circular motion (if theres a term for that?)

A nice rendition. Maybe some people say it's just a slightly slower than usual but in the case with many of Scott Joplin's pieces, they're often played way too fast. At this tempo played by Paul, I can at least dance some relaxing lindy hop to it, even though this dance technically wasn't around when THE ENTERTAINER came out.
