When I was 16 I got charged as an adult for assault and battery, for a lie told by a girl at a party. She said a tall blonde boy beat up her boyfriend. And 2 years into my sentence she came forward and said she had lied to cover for a friend. After that point in life my faith in humanity has slipped. I am now 22 and doing my best to get through college.

Eloise Sanderson I thought there WAS a law, that a minor must have a lawyer present during questioning?!? I’ve seen videos where cases were dismissed when it became known that the young person had been without legal representation. It was a compilation of people talking about how they got around the system by deliberately doing something minor (like shoplifting - I’m not saying that’s not wrong!) as a kid, immediately confessing, then at sentencing pointing out that they hadn’t had a lawyer, and the case was thrown out. And they did this several times!! But why would the police force or accept a confession when there obviously isn’t a lawyer in the room? Don’t they realize it won’t stand up?? (Well, I’m not naive, cases have obviously stood up, that’s the whole point of the current video! But why is the justice system so screwed up??)
@@syneiro5497 The law states that any person under 18 must have a parent or guardian present whilst being questioned, the police that just want a conviction get around this by getting the child to agree to one of them being the guardian
Sometimes mental illness can also cause people to falsely confess to a crime they didn't commit. Also corrupt cops/detectives can threaten someone's family and loved ones if they don't falsely commit to a crime.
I agree with you Landon. There should be a parent at least when a child is talking to the police...period. For a confession, there should be a lawyer present to explain exactly what they are doing from a legal standpoint. Children don't understand how the law works and are very easy to manipulate😞
My boyfriend was a juvenile delinquent and did 5 1/2 years in prison starting at 17. We met about a year after he was released and he has been a model citizen since. However he was locked up with a man who after serving almost 30 year was acquitted after DNA evidence proved he wasn't even at the he scene of the crime. He and my bf were good friends and kept in touch and he came to visit us a few months after he was released. This man is in his 50's and basically had to learn to live again. I had started my career but was still waiting for tables part time at a restaurant that had a AYCE buffet. During his visit the bf brought him to dinner at my restaurant while I was working and he would asked if me if he could use the restroom and basically we had to teach him how a buffet worked and that he didn't have to ask permission to get seconds or dessert. He easily got overwhelmed with everyday task that we take for granted and seem simple. He did get a decent settlement check for his wrongful conviction and over time has gotten more comfortable on the outside but one thing you can't buy with a settlement check is time and the nearly 30 that were lost. Keep a positive vibe out for this man if you are reading this, he definitely deserves it.
How was that 13 year old questioned without a parent or guardian present? They are not allowed to question a minor without a parent or guardian present. Children don't understand legal terms and don't understand the seriousness of the crime, and the consequences of it, either. If i was his parent, I would sue the cops!!
Possibly the most important video you've ever made. Please do more of this. TH-cam can be a real channel of truth for those who are wrongly convicted and any other type of injustice. Please keep doing this work. It's not just about being the top 10, it's about speaking truth to power. Again, thank you for telling these stories.
Didn't work when I was tortured, I confessed things like before I was born to make the torture stop. I got physically damaged and am now scheduled for volunteered lethal injection propofol. And kalium chloride to stop my heart, because they want people to look happy with a smile the extremely painful kalium chloride is used because without it people turn blue and that causes upset people during the funeral. I assure you that you should be happy for me when I receive my lethal injection.
The pain is exceptional, people assume that when torture is stopped the physical pain stops. That is not so. The entire body is physically damaged, no pain killer would help anyway.
All underage people should be automatically given counsel during interrogation. And anyone who falsely accuses someone of a crime, they get convicted, and then the person comes forward and says they lied should get the same sentence of the person they falsely accused.
This is sad. If your someone who is uneducated, low IQ, disabled or member of a marginalised community, justice doesn’t work for you. Rich people can get good lawyers, while the lesser are screwed over. Some police want to bully people into a confession, just so they can arrest someone to conclude the case 🤦🏼♂️.
During my torture it was obviously clear that the police enjoys it. The more pain the more their joy. And besides me, almost everyone else waa tortured too. They can make people confess whatever they like. It's their job, having fun inflicting pain. Is it legal? Officially it doesn't happen. Torture by police doe not exist in the legal system.
Great video, such a sad topic. But how did you not include the Central Park 5, now Exonerated 5 case? It is one of the most influential and famous cases involving false confessions...
If the Police force someone to confess to a crime they did not commit the officers involved should lose their jobs, and be made to pay compensation out of their own pockets to the innocent person they accused of that crime.
Guilty until proven innocent is not how our culture works it's so sad. Great video Landon. You have much compassion and are a wonderful host. Underrated for all the hard work you do. Xo
My whole reasoning for going to law school is to protect people in which have falsely confessed to crimes they couldn't possibly have committed. It happens wayyy more often than we like to think it does. Teach your kids that although it is important to adhere to authority, they must never discuss anything with them without your presence. I'm serious. Its not just for cases involving those charged with aggravated sexual assault or capital murder or whatever. It can be anything from theft to drug dealing. I don't care how closely you follow the law. The state is not always in your favor.
There are three issues with these, one an innocent person loses their freedom, two a victim does not receive justice, and three the real criminal is out there to target another victim now with the courage that they probably can get away with it.
Cool video but you should make it a little bit longer!🙂 I feel like I blinked my eyes and missed half the video. You're going too fast for me. haha No it turned out to be perfect! Interesting information in this one too, really cool.
On the Chicago matter, I can relate to that. I worked as a prison guard in IL. for 25 years, and very early on I learned that many would cop a plea for things they had been accused of just to get out of Cook County jail. You never take one convicts word on any thing, so I asked around and found out that no matter the race, no matter the sex, Cook County jail is hell for anyone there.
Same here. I was waiting for Jessie Misskelley's false confession. Even though they were released due to the Alford Plea, the judge pretty much admitted that thanks to all the outside help and DNA, was the reason for the release. It makes it obvious for us who followed the Paradise Lost stories that they're innocent, but had to admit guilt so the crooked state wouldn't have to pay a huge settlement. When Mark Byers & Pam Hobbs ended up on their side, that pretty much said it all. I believe in due process, but I honestly think it was Terry Hobbs. I'm glad an innocent man wasn't executed though.
I am thrilled that the men in this Top Ten finally were released. Being accused of a crime I had no part.in and going to jail is one of my biggest fears. Sadly in middle School scince I was the out cast alot of my peers tried copying my hand writing and tried frameing me for a bomb threat on the school. Luckily after the police conviscated my homework and checked the hand writing they realized it was infact bullying gone wrong and they left me alone.
