He then wants to pay them for the privilege of keeping our existing military bases there. That's what the billions is going towards.

Chagos have no indigenous population. The population were settled there from (Sri Lanka?) by the french. They, about 1200 people, were removed in 1971 when the plan to establish a strategic base in the Indian Ocean was made. Construction continued until the early noughts.
They turned down help because the fire engines offered had the wrong exhausts, ignoring all the smoke from the fires they were worried about pollution from the engines 🤦♂️

Chagossians didn't own any property on the Islands they lived in accommodation owned by the farms they worked on, there's wasn't any food grown on the Islands it was shipped in by the farms, who is going back and what property will they live in and what will they eat, there's a reason they were uninhabited until the coconut plantations were started.
