"Simbi" (Paradžik plays Paradžik)

- A big, unusual kind of friendship that has bound me with the male cat Simbi (1997-2008) was an inspiration to compose this piece. The piece symbolically describes Simbi's entire life and our friendship. On the day of uploading this video, it would has been Simbi's 19th birthday and I couldn't have imagined a better day to share my "Simbi", a concertante composition for double bass and piano.
First half of the piece is slow, second is fast and it ends up with a furious Coda. All the three main themes are reoccurring in both halves of the piece, but in different harmonies, meanings and characters. Each of the themes begins with a descending minor second, at first on the very beginning as B natural to B flat, which symbolizes Simbi's name (in "Solfège", french solmization: Si-B). All the key parts of the piece were composed within six weeks around August 2008, while the connections and adjustments in the piano score were finished at the turn of the year within some three weeks.
This is my contribution to the literature, a big concertante piece for double bass and piano with some new sonic solutions, different than any of the standard repertory pieces I know. Regarding the composition form, I've tried to fill a gap in the chamber music literature for double bass & piano, where there are barely any pieces in forms and sizes between the miniatures and the sonatas.
