Thank you so much! So essentially, what matters is not 3.0 or 3.1 or 3.2, but gen 1 or gen 2.

    Some technical notes.
The USB Specification gets revisions from time to time.
USB 1.0 was the original revision of the spec, by the time it was released, it had been updated to revision 1.1.
USB 1.1 is an internal only link, it is not allowed on any external connector by definition but could exist on an internal connector.
There has been no revision to USB 2.0
USB Spec 3.1 replaces USB Spec 3.0, and Spec 3.2 replaces 3.1, and once USB 4 is released, all computers will have USB 4 ports, even if they have not been changed. The number is the number of the specification so in all cases, the spec will support old protocols.
Of course, this is VERY confusing to consumers and in trying to simplify it, we just tell people USB 3.0, 3.1 and 3.2, are based on the speed, but in reality, everything is USB 3.2 even if it hasn't changed since introduced back in the USB 3.0 days.
The specification for USB 3.0 on the Type-C cable also supports other protocols. In this case, if you think about the connector and cable as "RJ-45" and that you can have www, video, Voip, and FTP on the same cable, that is due to what traffic is being sent over it.
In the case of the Type-C connector with the USB 3.0 spec and going forward, there are multiple modes the port can be put into and traffic can be mixed.
This is also packetized data, so you can transmit a USB packet followed by a DisplayPort packet, followed by a HDMI packet (although you would not normally see different video packets at the same time)
These "Alternate Modes" include: DisplayPort, HDMI, Ethernet, Packetized Audio, Thunderbolt, and others
In all cases, it is still a USB port that supports other protocols, just like a RJ-45 connector is still a Network port with different protocols running over it.
Currently, the spec requires all Type-C connectors to **always** have a USB Link since it is the USB Committee that owns the connector.
If the Type-C is on the back of a computer, then it can also carry a video link (this has been updated to allow it on the sides, and some run it on the front as well). Remember it still has to have a USB Link, but can also have a HDMI or DisplayPort link at the same time.
Many Cell Phones with Type-C that support HDMI Video use this mode.
The Thunderbolt committee wanted to have an Alternate mode assigned to them, so there is also a Thunderbolt mode, but it can operate in 2 ways although only one is really needed or supported. One, that the Thunderbolt packets are mixed in (not sure this is possible), or two, that all packets switch into Thunderbolt packets and that definitions of the Thunderbolt packets indicate what type of sub-packet it is or the original USB Spec. In other words, that the TB Packet carries HDMI, DP, Ethernet, etc
For this to work requires a Thunderbolt Powered Device controller at the other end (and of course a Thunderbolt Host Controller in the PC)
When the port powers up, the Thunderbolt controller sends an Alt-TB packet out (in USB Mode) to see if there is a TB-PD at the other end of the cable. If there is, then it switches to Alt-TB mode for all traffic. If not, then the TB Host Controller powers down and routes all USB and DP traffic directly to the device.
If there is a TB PD at the other end, then USB, Network, HDMI, DP, and other data is packetized by the TB Host controller and forwarded over to the TB PD
The Device Controller peels off the USB traffic (if any) and forwards to a USB connector, Video packets to a local video connector, network to a local network connector, etc.
BTW, of all of the videos I have gone through looking for someone to explain this in a thorough way, yours is the best on the USB part, though could be updated a bit for when you try and tackle the extremely complicated Thunderbolt addition.
I have been looking for a video I can send to my customers to explain the confusing world of Thunderbolt since the term is getting thrown around willy-nilly with no relevance on what the device or cable is.
Thank you again for your video

All I could find was something like this:
      www.newegg.com/p/2WG-026C-00001
You might try to contact the motherboard manufacturer to see if they have anything. You may be able to find a case that comes with one included. Many newer cases come with a USB-C connector.
If you have an extra PCI-E slot, you could install a hub like this one:
      www.newegg.com/p/0J2-07AR-003H5?Item=9SIBMYSK4B6656
The bandwidth is shared, so you could use both of the links for 2 x 10g USB-C.

    • @hometechadventure4462
      @hometechadventure4462  4 ปีที่แล้ว

Wow, it's difficult to find detailed specs for this model. It has a USB C port, but it does not list what type it is. I suspect that it is only capable of 5 Gb/ second in which case you would not be able to take advantage of the speed of that drive. In this case it would still work, but not at the speeds it is capable of.

    • @hometechadventure4462

The type C connection can be capable of higher speeds, but it must be implemented on the USB device and the computer for it to work at the higher speed. You will need to check the specs for your device and your computer.

    • @hometechadventure4462

I do not know a lot as I have not looked into cables very much. USB 3.1 gen 1 is the same as USB 3.0, so you should be able to find this cable. It will likely not be able to do USB 3.1 gen 2 speeds. USB A is limited in speed and power output, so any cable that has at least one of the ends USB A will be limited by this. Try to find the specs before you buy the cable.

    USB 3.0, USB 3.1 Gen 1, USB 3.1 Gen 2, USB 3.2 Gen 1, USB 3.2 Gen 2, USB 3.2 Gen 2x1, USB 3.2 Gen 1x2, USB 3.2 Gen 2x2
I will not remember this for more then a few days.
Now that I think about it, one way to try remember this is:
    Ignore 3.0 3.1 3.2 - just consider everything 3
then count how many 2 after that:
    - no 2 is 5 GB
    - one 2 is 10GB
    - two 2 is 20 GB

Why are some USB sticks listed as USB 3.0 but achieve nowhere near 5Gb/s speeds?

    • @hometechadventure4462
      @hometechadventure4462  4 ปีที่แล้ว

The interface speed has a theoretical top speed of 5GB/s, but most USB sticks can't keep up. This is because the memory modules and controllers are generally chosen for cost savings. For speeds near the 5GB/s limit, spend a lot on a fast USB stick, or probably even better, buy and external case and install a SATA SSD. If you want a bit more portability, use an mSATA drive in a small external case like the one shown in this video: th-cam.com/video/s8rADv_h8XI/w-d-xo.html
M.2 enclosures are also an option and hopefully they will come down in price soon.

Dear Home Tech Adventure. Great Videos you make and very understandable. Thanks so much. I have one question though, which I don't understand. Supposedly I Understand, that USB 3.2 GEN. 2x2 has 20 Gps Speeds, which should translate into 20/8 = 2.5 GBs (Gigabyte/s). Now I would like to buy a Samsung T7 Touch Nvme SSD Hard drive. Now this drive according to what I have read, should be exactly a USB 3.2 GEN. 2X2 drive and so it should therefore have a read and write speed of roughly 2.5 GB/s, which with overhead and cable should translate about 2 GB/s. But not only does this drive not reach these speeds (only 850-900 MB/s), but the manufaturer, Samsung does not promise these speeds either, since they only promise 1000 MB/s and 1050 MB/s Read and Write speeds Respectively. Now these speeds are much more in conjunction with USB 3.2 GEN. 2 and NOT GEN. 2x2, which has a speed of about 1250MB/s and thus around 1000 MB/s in real world speeds. I have though seen several reviews on youtube, which for some reason misses this point and still presents this drive as a GEN. 2x2 drive, but according to the speeds which they all reach (850-900 MB/s), then in my humble oppinion, this drive is only a GEN. 2 Drive and NOT a GEN. 2x2 drive.
Is there something I am missing here or is this drive wrongly branded???
Sincerely Thomas and thaks so much, for a grear channel.
