  • NYO-USA performs Bernstein’s Symphonic Dances from West Side Story in the orchestra’s Carnegie Hall debut on July 22, 2014, under the direction of David Robertson. Watch additional highlights from this concert at: bit.ly/1nCz8oF
    West Side Story, first produced on Broadway in 1957, is universally recognized as a landmark in the history of American musical theater. After an initial run of 732 performances, it returned to the Great White Way for the first of many revivals in 1960, the same year in which Leonard Bernstein invited the show’s orchestrators to extract a concert suite from his score.

    Each summer, Carnegie Hall's Weill Music Institute brings together the brightest young musicians from across the country (ages 16-19) to form the National Youth Orchestra of the United States of America (NYO-USA). In 2014, following a two-week training residency with leading professional orchestra musicians, these remarkable teenagers were joined by conductor David Robertson and violinist Gil Shaham for an eight-city coast-to-coast US tour. You may or may not know that the the National Youth Orchestra of the USA post dated and was inspired by the creation of Doctor Jose Antonio Abreu, the Simon Bolivar Youth Orchestra of Venezuela. Check out this version of Bernstein's West Side Story for comparison purposes.

      The search for the documentary video of the orchestra, Tocar y Luchar.

      You will be amazed. Sadly the tyrant Maduro has cancelled the program, probably Venezuela's best ambassadorial program. More sadly, Doctor Abreu died this past month (March 2018).

    roughly half an hour ago, I've been to a place where this was performed live by the Halle orchestra. I will truly never forget tonight, and I of course had to go right to youtube to listen to this phenomenal piece again. Blew my mind completelt, I loved every single second of it, at the edge of my seat i could not contain myself from grinning wildly, every crescendo lifting my soul to the very ceiling

    Hi,
    what means choke cymb (warning: not chokeD cymb) at the beginnig of
    Symphonic Dances? I guess a SPLASH cymbal. Not a normal muffled
    suspended cymbal (the note is different on the five lines system; in
    addition on the same score we see a "choke cymbal" with legatura meaning
    "let it vibrate"!!) nor a Hi-hat (when Lennie want an hi-hat he simply write
    hi-hat). Thanks

    Clearly I'm out of place here compared the the comments so far, but this performance comes across as way too technically clean. If anyone, it's teenagers who know how to party and are full of unexpressed passion but I don't feel/ hear/ see any of that (except, possibly, the flute player in "Cool"). Such a pity. My heart sinks if this represents the kind of live music societies in the USA can expect in years to come. C'mon guys - let go! Be passionate! Show the love and hurt you can't express with words! Party! Being technically brilliant is only the beginning of music.

    • @billsullivan3920
      @billsullivan3920 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      ***** Fair point! Actually, I am more disappointed with the overly gushing and somewhat artificial praise of the commentators below rather than the performers. This may be the "Best performance... I have EVER heard" for some, but then I guess that doesn't say much for the performances that have been heard to date. And, not to be too contrary, there are a vast number of orchestras made up of teenagers throughout the world who do let go, are far more passionate, and less clinical than this orchestra - particularly in the UK and South America. I see no reason to give this bunch of talented young folk a false impression that they are the absolute best, when they are clearly not by global standards.

    • @Chad.Lilley
      @Chad.Lilley 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      +Stephen P Brown Which youth Orchestras do you speak of? I believe all are entitled to opinions but if you speak of say, Dudamel's Simón Bolívar Orchestra from the El Systema Program, many of the artists that make up this orchestra are no longer youth musicians, contrary to popular belief. I believe the average age of that group is now somewhere around 24. I digress, I think the point here is that CH has created a spectacular program for our Nation's young musicians, and they perform as well as anyone else, objectively speaking. I may be biased, but I think Maestro Robertson did a spectacular job leading this Orchestra; he did just win a Grammy, so he must be doing something right...
