What a good movie. So many really good lines in this one. Of course, if you have Kathleen Harrison(even with only a few lines) and Margaret Lockwood in a movie, it can't help but be good.
Cheeky devils! This flick plays like a real send up of Hollywood films of the 30’s, from Finishing School to Stage Door, to Gone with the Wind, It Happened One Night, and practically any or every Dick Powell film of that era 😂
Surprisingly fast-paced and engaging for its time. Directed by the man who would direct Oliver! Wish it were subtitled as I couldn't get all of the fast cockney dialog on that decaying soundtrack. We'll never know for sure, but I bet this movie was the inspiration for The Gang's All Here.
Absolutely marvellous. Margaret Lockwood is so familiar that I'd assumed everything of note from this era had already been widely shown. But not this hidden gem. Maybe the frilly underwear had been deemed unsuitable in some quarters. I found the whole thing thoroughly enjoyable, but especially the lingerie, I must admit.
A Girl Must Live, released UK 19 April 1939 (London), UK 25 September 1939, USA 23 March 1942 (New York City, New York). Margaret Lockwood as Leslie James; Renee Houston as Gloria Lind; Lilli Palmer as Clytie Devine; George Robey as Horace Blount; Hugh Sinclair as Earl of Pangborough; Naunton Wayne as Hugo Smythe; Moore Marriott as Bretherton Hythe; Mary Clare as Mrs. Wallis; David Burns as Joe Gold; Kathleen Harrison as Penelope; Drusilla Wills as Miss Polkinghome; Wilson Coleman as Mr. Joliffe; Helen Haye as Aunt Primrose; Frederick Burtwell as Hodder; Muriel Aked as Mme. Dupont, headmistress; Martita Hunt as Mme. Dupont, assistant; Kathleen Boutall as Mrs. Blount; Michael Hordern (Undetermined Role); Merle Tottenham, College inmate; Joan White, College inmate; Judy Gray, Dancer; Hal Walters, Barman at Party.
From the Cinderella rope till the marriage office at the end so beautiful jsut wonderful one of the best movies ive watched after devil on my shoulder amd dream girl
haha! what a good comedy and a great movie, such intelligent conversations as well, women are so intelligent, and not like usually in these movies dumb, looks realistics, showbusiness is nasty business. Margaret Lockwood is adorable and Lilly Palmer too, awesome movie. Highly recommended, trust me, I am a conaisseur! Oh I love these old movies.
What a darling movie!!! It actually did a great job of showing how phony and sinister some women can be to “get their man”! My friends did that with me, they would go out dancing and “forget” to ask me also. They FINALLY told me it was because the men always wanted me and not them!🤦♀ How ridiculous
No, it isn't! I have a sister-in-law who did that to me until I confronted her.( I really liked her and we had a warm relationship, so I was puzzled. ) What you implied is true...it never occurred to me, as a bit of a nerd....but she was accustomed to sole attention, and I did have a reputation as an up and coming concert pianist with the Symphony Orchestra . We worked it out...we are still good friends and laugh about those years. Never close the door on a family member's problems. We all learn.
The script of this film is so witty with very English references that might not be picked up by non-English or modern audiences. I loved the line from Kathleen Harrison (around 15.00)" They couldn't tell the truth to their dying fathers - if they knew who they were!" Also (around 18.20) "Well If it isn't Mr Morgan - weren't you in Cannes last Christmas with Lady Bartleby? He replies in a contrasting working class accent, " No, last Christmas I was in hospital with Sciatica!"
I do like this movie, but I can see so far as I have watched, that it is a cross between Gold Diggers of '33 and Stage Door (1937) with Katherine Hepburn and Lucille Ball. One of the two girls sharing the bedroom, has the same personality that Lucille Ball played. The show girls have the same personalities as some of them in Gold Diggers of '33.
"You look as though you'd appeal to men whose wives don't understand them.." Well didn't that dog take the biscuit. And sadly he's still running with it. All the way through to 2022
"it must be something aweful to plant rubber in the jungle and watch the little seeds growing into DUNLOP" hahaha..... Now, this comedy was really funny. But most of all because of Margaret Lockwood and Kathleen Harrison, I love them. Thanks for the upload. :)
“Oh hang tomorrow, it never comes!” Funny joke, this was the year “Gone With the Wind” came out. Even if ppl hadn’t seen it yet the Hollywood news scene was all a buzz since Vivien Leigh got the coveted part. Oh well! English ppl can pull off a southern accent better than many Americans!
Very funny! Where do you think the Southern accent came from? Visit the Southeastern area of England and the Lake Country. When I came over for Graduate School, they thought I was returning home.( North Carolina is my home)
@@sarahhearn-vonfoerster7401 ha! Exactly! I’m from NC as well, never made it to the Lake District but spent a school year in England. Enjoyed it and envy you matriculating through the system! The traditional Banker’s accent on the Outer Banks of NC is said to have descended from Devonshire, England. I hope local accents don’t die out, they are quite interesting.
I wonder if anyone can help. I have been desperately looking for a old film about a married women who has many admirers who constantly come to her home. Her husband is a very patient man and just allows her to live her adulterous life. Then he dies and goes to heaven. Wife continues to live her life until the day when she is also about to die. She sees the ghost of her dead husband and begs for his help and forgiveness, but he refuses and I think her fear sends her to down to hell. I can’t remember anymore about the film or who stared in it, but have been trying so hard to find it.
@@fredneecher1746 Clearly you do! Who are you to censor a person's opinion just because it doesn't accord with your own? I think Whaleshrimp makes a valid point: I too found the dialogue too fast to follow and the gaps between too short for credible conversation. Indeed I had to slow the playback speed to 0.75 in order to make any sense of it at all! My interest in watching this film was aroused by its award of two stars in Halliwell and from reading many of the gushing comments here. However, like Whaleshrimp, I had neither the patience nor resolve to endure it. Sorry if that offends you.

It’s amazing watching these films 83 years later
Kathleen Harrison looks so young. It is wonderful to see these classic British films. TCM pays then no mind!
She was born in the 19th century.
Always a pleasure to see Marg Lockwood.
Thanks for another beauty A.O.

I loved Margaret Lockwood in " The Lady Disappears " 😍 ! Wonderful movie..Classic now!
The fight scene in this was worth paying for ! Hilarious ! The dialogue was priceless throughout. 2022
Love anything Margaret Lockwood,or Carol Reed for that matter💯Thank you for the flick🎥What a treat👍

FUN FUN FUN & THE BEAUTIFUL LILLI PALMER........
Love the graphic design of the credits.
delightful little film
I love this film!😍
WOW. Fantastic movie.
Omg this is so funny !! The old lady making cat meows at the table :)
THE THREE LADIES IN THIS ONE (Margaret Lockwood, Renee Houston, Lilli Palmer), WERE ABSOLUTELY MARVELOUS TOGETHER.
The wonderfull Renne Houston - theres a huge park named after her Grannie Bella in Glasgow

For captions, tap the upper right corner of the screen, then tap the three dots.
Captions are poorly written and very often don't make sense.
I slowed it down so I could get more of the dialog. Now I have to watch it at normal speed!
This movie is a riot 😁😁
So fun to watch!

"What's he playing?"..."a Bach fugue" ...."Don't be silly, that's an organ..." !
Really funny to a Classical musician 😁 !!
Many organists play Bach fugues on that instrument.

Even when slowing down the playback speed (& captions on), I cannot follow this high-pitch cackle-speech of these women. 😢
The captions are pretty useless by the way.

Hellarious.
There are few things as entertaining as watching people backstab each other, lie, cheat and steal. At least, that's what entertains the devil.
Ooh a fresh faced Lilli Palmer! This is reminiscent to “Stage Door”!

If men behaved like this he would be considered a worthless joke.
If you like squeaky, whiny, women who shriek non-stop, at 300x normal speed, about stupid stuff... you'll love this.
I did! But I did slow down the movie to catch more of the dialog.
I struggled through the first 12 minutes then shut it off. British women screaming and talking very fast impossible to understand.
So why tell us? No one cares.
