I'm Dr. Mary Barbera and I fell into the autism world more than two decades ago when my first-born son, Lucas, was diagnosed with autism. Since then, I became a Board Certified Behavior Analyst, Host of the Turn Autism Around podcast (with more than 1 million downloads), and best-selling author of two books (including my newest book Turn Autism Around: An Action Guide for Parents of Young Children with Early Signs of Autism).

Thank you for this. As an SLPA working with students on moderate severe side of the ASD spectrum, I do not allow the rewarding of disruptive and even violent behaviors during my speech sessions. The aids has to be taught this. I am going to share this with the teachers of the students. They have gone so long with being rewarded( the students perspective of screaming crying , hitting , spitting to make me give them what they want) for the wrong thing. Nope I talk in a whisper voice or go completely silent looking at them and advising them "let me know when you are ready with a calm body and voice" It works every time .and By week three of sessions with a new student ; I have no behaviors just speech and language progress. Language emerges faster once behaviors have calmed down and they gain more language to express them selves. 8yrs in the biz, 15yrs due to my son being on the spectrum with a language impairment. I found my passion because of him and helping other children and families. I love what I do! Happy Teacher Appreciation MONTH
