Hi loves! One of my most frequently asked question is why I choose optometry, why someone should pursue optometry, and how does it stand out compared to other profession. I figure i'd make a video explaining my decision journey and why i chose this amazing field! Hope you enjoyed!

HI! I am a junior in high school and I just want to thank you so much for the content that you release. I have been wearing glasses since I was 7 and I have always enjoyed visiting my optometrist, and that fascination with those appointments made me want to pursue that career. I applied for the first time last year and was unfortunately rejected. This year I've felt myself lose the passion to pursue optometry school. especially with how 2020 turned out. I'm 24 now, and time has just become really discouraging, being that by the time I finish I'd be 29 while most of my friends are already professionally working as nurses. Watching this video and seeing your genuine passion for the field as a student is really encouraging. I wish you well in all your future endeavors Khanh!!
You are on your OWN timeline, not racing with anyone else. We have people in our class that are in their 30’s and even 40’s. Those people are doing GREAT by the way. Who cares what everyone else is doing, you do what makes you happy. Reach out to the school and ask to REVIEW YOUR APP! See what you can improve on and what their marks are. You’re ONLY 24 you have your entire life ahead of you. That’s actually not old, a lot of people in our class started mid 20’s. Don’t be discouraged 💖 Wishing you the best!
Don't worry about your age. 24 years old is nothing. I'm 26 and considering applying for the summer. It's never too late to pursue your dreams.
This is one of the best descriptions of our profession I've ever seen. It's sometimes so hard to debunk the idea that all we do is correct refractive errors, but we are trained to do sooo much more :)
I start my first year of Optometry school this fall, I hope to be able to represent our profession as well as you do some day 😅

Hi! I have no idea if you'll reply to this but I'm a 3rd year college student who after years of knowing I wanted to go into medicine, recently decided optometry school is for me! It was really an epiphany moment because I feel like I didn't think about optometry as a career path ever, despite being obsessed with vision and eyes and having an amazing relationship with my optometrist for the past ten years. Now I feel like I'm really late to the game, especially since I'm already going into my last year of college. I know I'll take a gap year probably so I can get shadowing experience and see more behind the scenes. I was wondering if there was any advice you could give because this feels like such unfamiliar territory

hi! I'm a middle school student and have to select an endorsement next year. I have always wanted to be an optometrist and purse optometry. However, I am not sure if I should take STEM or Public service endorsements in high school. What endorsement would you recommend will set me on the path I need to become an optometrist?

I'm currently a sophomore in high school who is in a biomedical program, as someone who gets their eyes checked regularly (I wear contacts) I thought about how amazing being optometrist would be for a future career and this video made me even more so passionate about it! @@Random-js6em it’s actually something I’m still thinking about doing (now I’m currently a senior) and I’m actually very passionate about wanting to be an ultrasound technician and maybe further on become an reproductive endocrinologist!!!!
@@Random-js6em but it’s really crazy to think about how our interests can change as we go through highschool I’m still in the biomedical program, but I think through that I’ve found my calling for working in the OBGYN field whether that be helping couples who can’t have their own kids or just being able to help in some way 🙏

You have the option to chose a residency after your fourth year! I have my heart on ocular disease right now but I haven’t been exposed to all the fields yet so who knows!☺️

Hi, lately I’ve been studying for the MCAT. But I started to question my decision and looked at other options. I was wondering if you spend a lot of time with your patient? How does patient and optometry relationship/interaction is? Your video has made me more intrigued into this field :)
Great patient interaction! You spend as long as the exam with them so 15-20 minutes usually. For us students since we’re still learning and doing every little step, it takes about 1.5 hours!

Hey I loved your video, you’re so sweet and this provided so much insight. I’m a senior in high school and I’m not very good at math, and not amazing at science but it’s do-able. Would you say that you have to be quite smart in those areas to Pursue optometry? Or are the concepts difficult to grasp?
the optical (glasses) side of optometry relies a lot of having a good grasp of concepts in physics, but the math is actually very simple! as long as you like the field and are willing to put a bit of time into the science side of things, i'm sure you'll do well

You don’t need prior certification to be an optometry assistant! You just apply if you see an ad
Do they do minor surgeries? Trying to find a healthcare profession that doesn't involve surgery. Originally wanted to be a pharmacist but the field is oversaturated
Optometrists do not do surgery! That's what opthamologists are for
Optometrist can do minor surgery and prescribe controlled medication if they job in 17 grade government job holder

I don’t think there’s an age limit! We have people in our class as young as I am who started right out of college and people in their 30’s, and even mid & late 40’s! You got this!

I'm not 100% sure if the pre-med prerequisites are the same as the pre-optometry requirements, but if they are then I would potentially be favoring optometry over medicine. I'll just have to see. Also, I haven't shadowed an optometrist yet so I think that will be important for me to do! I hope you're doing well and that you pick which one is best for you :)

I’m about to enter my senior year of undergrad and I’m so discouraged and stressed. Due to COVID A lot of things I planned to do to apply to optometry school got pushed back and I’m nervous I might have to take a gap year now :(
There is nothing wrong with taking a gap year if you don’t feel ready! Apply when you feel like you have everything lined up so you don’t put any unnecessary stress on yourself and waste money. Best of luck!✨
