Yeah, not to mention you have to often think outside the box if you want a specific contrast or texture (especially when you have no means to get screentones)
By far the best video ive seen so far on value, that finally actually explained it with concrete examples, instead of just stating what they are and moving on without examples of how to actually apply it! Loved it! One bonus tip that helps me a lot when doing colour illustrations, is to also remove your saturation and hue, through a filter, to check if the values work for the chosen colours. One good rule of thumb i saw recommended is that you illustration also needs to work when you put it into greyscale. The simple trick of checking the values on your colour illustrations can really help identify problems.
In volume 30 of aot I honestly love how Isayama made the whole page black with the pannels. I wonder how he did that it’s looks extremely beautiful imo.
Thank you so much for the tips. I have been stuck for so long on how to shade properly. I tried different ways and all of it didn't turn out well. I didn't go to any art classes so it's hard for me to master stuffs. 😢
I have a question... When should we use this technique? I use hatching and cross hatching a lot but after reading some mangas, I realized a lot of mangakas used this technique + hatching.
yes, but i think dif. shades are sorta better. I mean, when i read the naruto manga it was mostly B&W however spy X family had a lot of variety of shades
i guess im wondering how do you do values with inking, like is your pencil supposed to be the half tones like gray or do is hatching supposed to be the halftones
If you want to learn more about hatching techniques, you can watch the dip pen tutorial videos on our channel. You can start here: th-cam.com/video/u6ob4c2TwhY/w-d-xo.html
Hatching and crosshatching are techniques for actually drawing in the shading. The level of darkness of the shading is itself a value. You don’t have one without the other. Darker shadows = darker value. No matter what, once you start applying shading whether that’s with flat blacks or grays or if it’s using crosshatching or hatching, that shading is in itself giving you more variety in values.
This vid is wat i need anyways is there like a group or platform am not in a position to take calls😶 so if there's another way to reach u guys without calls and revealing myself that'd b great

It’s up to you and what you’d like to draw. :) Just as an FYI, mangakas usually use A3 or A4 paper. If you plan to create your own manga, it might be an adjustment from A7 to something much larger.
@@aphlearntodrawmanga Absolutely! I am a beginner, I've got a dip pen equipped with four varied nibs, a set of bold Sakura brush pens, standard pencils, black ink, and plenty of A4 sheets to work on. Also could you use hard pastels to color?
@@aphlearntodrawmanga Hey, just wanted to follow up on my question about shading equipment for manga. Would really appreciate your input whenever you get a chance. Thanks!

@@Hollowguy920here's what I found : while drawing Manga, pencils isnt the answer you could either use alcohol based markers to gray scale them if you are working on paper or scan or take a photo of your work and add values, scales, screen tones digitally using a software called "clip paint studio".
I love how these videos brabble about a thing but not clearly show it , to have 0 authencity and use random examples of POPULAR manga. there are 50000 that shade just the way the video says not to do and they still get enough readers

I think pure black and white art actually looks very good in manga. Gives it a nice texture!
Yeah, not to mention you have to often think outside the box if you want a specific contrast or texture (especially when you have no means to get screentones)
Depends on the artwork though but yh it can be great
A simple tip is to create charts to study creating different shades. I try to do 10 of them from white to black.
Great tip! :D

Should I use values or hatching/crosshatching

But what about Masashi Kishimoto, Akira Toriyama and Eichiro Oda who use pure black and white?
It’s all about stylistic preferences. 😊
Should we use markers or pencil ?

2) What art supplies do you have on hand?

why can't you just color digitally then later apply effects for darkening 🥸
