Pope Francis Goes Off On Capitalism

  • "Pope Francis has attacked unfettered capitalism as "a new tyranny", urging global leaders to fight poverty and growing inequality in the first major work he has authored alone as pontiff. The 84-page document, known as an apostolic exhortation, amounted to an official platform for his papacy, building on views he has aired in sermons and remarks since he became the first non-European pontiff in 1,300 years in March. In it, Francis went further than previous comments criticising the global economic system, attacking the "idolatry of money" and beseeching politicians to guarantee all citizens "dignified work, education and healthcare". He also called on rich people to share their wealth...".* Ben Mankiewicz (What The Flick?! and TYT Sports) breaks it down on The Young Turks.

    Actually, he has always lived frugally. He walked or rode a bike as a Bishop, and did not employ maids or servants. HE cooked for himself. He chose not to live in the Pope's Palace, but instead lives in the most modest of the Vatican's properties that he was allowed to. HE rejects as much ostentation as he can. Do your homework. He is a figurehead, not personally responsible for pedophile priests. HE is the MOST visible Catholic on the planet, and also THE most PROGRESSIVE Pope in recent centuries. I am not Catholic, I'm not even Christian. But I like this man, I like what he stands for and how he is flipping the Catholic Church on its head in so many ways. THe mere fact that he DARES to speak out on stuff like this is admirable.

      While being the Archbishop He used to take the bus to work every day in Buenos Aires until he was elected Pope and even cooked his own meals, remember he is a Jesuit, they are very different kind of priest.

      As an agnostic I concur, It seems that Catholics are starting to act like there actually Christians (according to what Jesus said they should act). I am really impressed with this Pope; before this guy I could have given two shits about what the fucking pope said. Yet it seems this is a stand up gent and with a flock of millions he can be an actual voice and power of change. For example look at what he said about atheists (basically its not his place to judge, that's gods). Bravo to this pope.

    This Pope seems like a good guy (especially compared to that last ghoul), but let's not forget how wealthy the Catholic Church is. They own their own little country with a gold throne and many hundreds of millions of dollars in assets. It's a bit ironic to hear the figurehead of that institution talking about the imbalance between the rich and the poor.

    Remeber when I used to joke that the conservatives down in Jesusland where more right wing then the Pope? I can't make that joke anymore.
    Seriously though, this guy is actually acting like a Pope is supposed to!
    Going amongst the masses, personally caring for the sick and weak... he's even doing random 'pope calls' where he calls up Catholics for a tete et tete. His Holiness tore the 'Bishop of Bling' up and put down the 'Cardinal Rulers' who treat the Vatican as a personal bank account... As a youth he followed the teachings of the Christian liberation theorists in south America and it shows.

      I totally agree. Hating gay people because it tells you in the bible that its wrong is like hating shellfish eaters. One, the bible tells you not to hate people, even sinners. Two, it's like, one line. Jesus talked about way more important stuff, but greedy republicans that pretend to be Cristian ignore so many of the important things in ordeder to line their pockets they have to chose mundane details to focus on so that people believe their charade.

    • @michellesellers7315
      @michellesellers7315 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Clare Hansell Christians are called by God to hate the sin not the sinner. Being gay is a sin against God just like hating someone is a sin. God calls all gays to repenting of their sins not embrace it. Yes God loves them and all of us the same, however God is a God of Justice as well. just like Sodom and Gomorra God judged it because there was no repentance. He is the same yesterday, today, and forever. This is a serious offense to him just like hating you brother. Lets not dumb it down, but show Gods love by telling truth so that gay souls will be saved from hell.

    This Pope gets it. I'm not even Catholic but this guy is amazing. I love to see someone in a powerful position speak out on important issues. The who gay marriage dispute is really just something to keep the public busy arguing amongst themselves instead of paying attention to the real issues. The rich live off of the blood of the poor. This has been the way of the world since the beginning of time. We are slaves to the white collar. We work our fingers to the bone, miss the milestones of our children, worry ourselves into an earlier grave and they don't even want us to have affordable healthcare. The right forces us to accept laws written to enforced their religious beliefs. They are not showing God's love in their actions. Instead of leading people to God by example by showing God's love and patience they attempt to terrify people into belief. Alas this is the way of man.

    As an anti-theist _a la_ Hitchens, I have to say that this pope is surprising me as well. I would rather see the Catholic church dismantled, as well as other religious organizations, but if he's fighting the good fight and concentrating on important humanist issues, then I have much, much, less of a problem with him.
    For those who are commenting that he should be doing something about these things: I think that he actually is. I've actually read the paper released a few days ago (and yes, it is very long), and he calls for massive changes in the church, including changes on issues which were previously dogmatic and never thought to be changed. He has called a special council for discussion and reform, and I believe he actually means it. Of course, we'll have to see what he does in the future, but we all know that changes in the church take epochs in general. As it is, he's as much of a revolutionary as we'll ever see in the church today and I believe he truly means what he says. Even though he could technically rule by fiat and change everything overnight, he knows full well that it wouldn't simply be accepted and would form another rift. If he's going to change the church, a rift isn't going to change anything but harden the stance of those dissenters and will accomplish nothing.
    No, I think he's doing something wise: he's trying to change the conversation and forcing people to discuss the issues which are important, and trying to get them to see the humanist side which he apparently truly believes in. And if he's able to get a consensus, then change will follow.
    So I'm in the wait and see mode. I do, however, have high hopes for this pope. He may not live long enough to see all the changes which he wishes to enact, but he appears to be setting the tone, pace, and discussion for years to come. Perhaps that is his ultimate goal: to change the entire tone for the long run so that the next pope will have no choice but to go along with it, and future popes thereafter.
    By the way, for those who point out that the vatican has been accused several times of money laundering and close ties with the mafia, this new pope has already angered many in the vatican by lashing out against this and saying that there will be no more of that. So much so that a few articles have been written about how the mafia has found itself in a very bad spot all of a sudden with what lies ahead in their financial stakes within the vatican. He appears to be ready to take that corruption on as well and, some think, could be risking his life in doing so. It's not a completely idle threat, so I believe that he is truly genuine in his humanist activism.
    We'll see what he brings in the future. But I don't recall reading about such an active pope since the middle ages, nor do I recall reading about such a pope who has made such provocatively humanist statements in the entire history of the church.

      ***** "No one can serve two masters. For you will hate one and love the other, or be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money." (NLT, Luke 16:13)
      Do not wear yourself out to get rich; have the wisdom to show restraint. Cast but a glance at riches, and they are gone, for they will surely sprout wings and fly off to the sky like an eagle. (NIV, Proverbs 23:4-5)
      What good will it be for a man if he gains the whole world, yet forfeits his soul? Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul? (NIV, Matthew 16:26)
      Those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs. (TNIV, 1 Timothy 6:9-11, emphasis added)
      "Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. (NIV, Matthew 6:19-21)
      Let every person be subject to the governing authorities; for there is no authority except from God, and those authorities that exist have been instituted by God... For the same reason you also pay taxes, for the authorities are God's servants, busy with this very thing. Pay to all what is due them - taxes to whom taxes are due, revenue to whom revenue is due, respect to whom respect is due, honor to whom honor is due. (NRSV, Romans 13:1, 6-7)

      banditontherun1024 Fact check your post buddy. He is Pope Francis.
      And he didn't get rid of the throne on day one, that was fictional propaganda you were reading. He hasn't sold off the throne, which you imply, it's still in the Vatican and has been used during several meetings with Cardinals and high Church officials.
      He has made more moves towards humility and reasonable expenditures than any pontiff in recent memory. But you shouldn't exaggerate those gestures. Focus on the facts, like the apartments he is living in, which are not a simple hotel room. They are much more modest than JPII's chambers, let alone Papa Benni's.
      This is the first real action, not spin or grandstanding, that we have really seen from Pope Francis. It may be a good sign. Or the princes of the Church may rein him in, they way they did when he said atheist could go to Heaven or homosexuals weren't evil. We will have to see how much influence this Roman Bishop is willing to exert and how much he wants to exert.
      If he moves much farther to the left (and make no fucking mistake, he is still extremely right wing) he will need to trade his eurotrash classic in for the old bulletproof popemobile. The Far Right won't stand for this kind of talk.

    The problem isn't economic inequality-- it never has been. It's economic opportunity.
    We should be less focused on simply giving low-income people money and more focused on providing them the opportunity to make money. Make college free; no one who works hard should ever be burdened by tens of thousands of dollars of student debt.

    • @RedroomStudios
      @RedroomStudios 10 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      the problem right now is certainly economic inequality. Over the past 4 or 5 decades executive pay has increased by 300% while average income has actually decreased when you account for inflation. Fixing economic inequality has nothing to do with welfare or giving people money. It has to do with paying people a fair living wage for their labor.

    • @devourerofbabies
      @devourerofbabies 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Inequality most certainly is a problem in today's world. Inequality is okay when the basis of that inequality is a difference between people's talents and willingness to work. Nobody is suggesting that a neurosurgeon should make the same as a convenience store clerk, but in today's world, great inequality is being driven by the exploitation and predation of the powerless by the powerful. That kind of inequality absolutely is a problem.

    • @Gnomefro
      @Gnomefro 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      RedroomStudios "the problem right now is certainly economic inequality. Over the past 4 or 5 decades executive pay has increased by 300% while average income has actually decreased when you account for inflation."
      That's not actually an argument that supports your claim though. unless said increase also could amount to a tangible pay increase for workers when divided over billions of workers, it actually is completely irrelevant. There are also many good reasons to pay executives well, such as preventing corruption and otherwise aligning the interests of executives with those of the owners. It's entirely possible that you'd lose money overall by paying executives less due to the executives selling out to your competition(Which might even be foreign and the whole thing could lead to, not increased wages, but unemployment).
      Overall, this actually is a fairly complex system and you are looking at a single variable. Beyond that, it's easy to agree with your concluding remark. Fair wages has a lot to do with "living wage". No job should ever be done unless people are willing to pay a living wage for it. Beyond that, wages should probably be tied to meeting economic goals for the company as well as figuring out ways to improve operation. One should probably focus more on that than how much the executive director makes, because his salary is dictated by the fact that it's him alone who will give the ok to purchase raw materials worth $5 billion and his salary simply has to be large compared to the expected payoff for any one such transaction to avoid corruption. This simply has nothing to do with fairness.

    Let's collectively end poverty on the planet. What is needed is both a will and a way. The will is up to each person, but the way - a new way is easy.
    Set up CBA's, community bank accounts. A government, or any group of investors, or any interested individual can set it up. They put money into a community bank account, and the interest goes to the community. The capital is never spent. Plus the banks that have the CBA, have money to loan to the community.

      But, John Paul II and Benedict both advocated Capitalism as a response to Communism. Francis is just harkening back to that and saying that, "hey, unfettered capitalism is no good; it runs off of vicious greed, and it incentivizes violence and oppression." He's only doing as much as any other Pope has done in the past. And further more; religion is hardly a powerfully moving thing if it DOESN'T affect your politics and economics, right? I mean, the reason many Catholics try so hard against abortion is because we BELIEVE it to be wrong. If we didn't believe it to be wrong, we wouldn't ACT against it. Thus, religion affects political practice. In the same vain, the Pope is saying that a capitalism that feeds itself by harming human dignity is morally corrupt, and ought not be practiced. When Vulture Capitalists can literally extort and hold hostage the entire nation of Argentina, we can be well assured that this form of unfettered Capitalism has gone too far, and become a beast straight out of revelation. It seems to me, that the Pope is just doing what Popes do: pointing out grievances and atrocities against humanity and human dignity wherever it exists; in other words, "Poping"

    Why does everyone ignore the scandinavian? I Norway we are a socialist democracy that works! The taxes that the rich have to pay here is > or = 40% of incoming + taxes on top of stored richness. This is the same thing as ignoring Amsterdam when it comes to legalization of marijuana. Social democracy works! And Amsterdam works!

    I like that Francis hasn't backed down from any of the pressure he's been receiving. If I didn't know any better, I'd almost want to convert.
    He needs to keep telling it like it is, and hopefully Catholics will follow suit.

    Go Pope Go! This system we live by has inequality/poverty built in. More and more people are seeing this and I'm glad that some people in high places are not only realizing it, but actually talking about it. I'd like to take it a step further... instead of wealth redistribution... imagine wealth elimination. Let's move past the monetary system already and start taking care of everyone.

      Dennis Pearce Is everything black & white for you? Just because Darwin got loads of things wrong, do you reject the things he got right?
      Who cares what Pope Francis believes that we don't. This is a man with great political influence who's accusing so called Christians of acting in woefully Unchristian ways.
      He's actually striving to clean house, he's always lived a frugally as his office has allowed, & I think he's a man of conscience.
      I was raised Catholic, & this is the first Pope I have respect for. He's walked the walk & I'm glad he now has the power to talk the talk.
      The deluded have to be led, better this man than his predecessors. His message is that unfettered capitalism is fundamentally Unchristian.

      Dennis Pearce Listen, he is a religious guy (no shit), so of course his views will differ from mine, or clearly yours. But to be honest, his beliefs are in my opinion a lot less important than his actions. He is, at least when compared to an American with equally strong religious beliefs, a pretty good guy. Really, what I meant to say was not that I love the guy, but merely that I was impressed with how different he was than the views I have a right wing religious american.

      guird4 Perhaps what we should do is make churches and other places of worship go through the paperwork that a non-profit has to go through, otherwise, it is open to heavy abuse. Just last year there was a swinger club in Texas that classified it as a church in order to evade taxes. Additionally, non-profits must also proof that they as an organization, do not endorse a particular candidate.
