  • "Pope Francis suspended Germany's infamous "Bishop of Bling" today after learning that the bishop spent as much as $55 million renovating his official residence, including a Bloombergian-$20,000 on his bathtub. Bishop Franz-Peter Tebartz-van Elst met with Pope Francis earlier this week to discuss the cost of his home's renovation, which includes $20,000 on a new bathtub, $35,000 on a single conference table, $1.1 million on a garden, and $4 million on a private chapel...".* Ana Kasparian, Cenk Uygur, Ben Mankiewicz (What The Flick?! and TYT Sports), and John Iadarola (TYT University and Common Room) break it down on The Young Turks.

    I appreciate your reporting on this item. I think the Pope made his point clear and recalling this Bishop was the right thing to do. However, your comments such as his "funny" clothes and "did he get thrown out for spending on that money, or being gay?" were extremely offensive and rude. Whatever your personal religious views, you claim to be reporters, so please do your job with a hint of professionalism and respect.

      I came here to type that exact same thing. You want to broadcast news, that's fine- but why is every news piece also an opinion piece as well? If all of you are not religious, and don't care much for tradition, fine- but don't mock things which are older than most nations.

    • @foobarfuubar2295
      @foobarfuubar2295 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Shamino1 Even if the religion exists longer than most nations I highly doubt that all of the traditions and the garments were like that over 1000 years ago. Also I think the argument "it was there before you were born so you have no right to make fun of it" is completely invalid.
      Will White I partly agree. I'm an atheist and mostly agree with their opinions, but those opinions had no place in this piece. But the style that every news piece is also an opinion piece was like that from the beginning as far as I know and usually I enjoy it. What I don't enjoy is when they all bash on a topic on which they know they agree on anyway. If it is a discussion between Cenk and Ana about if a 15 year old boy can be raped it is interesting to me. Not when the complete panel goes: "Ha! Look at those ridiculous looking religious people."

    Pope Francis is a Jesuit, that's a good thing and a something that's been a long time coming, they are not allowed to seek positions/promotions they must be asked. They are expected to have several PHDs under their belt by the time they've finished their "training" which takes up to 14 years. Your religious beliefs or lack there of aside, there's an educated, humble and good man in a major position of power in the world.

    What people always miss is that just because someone says they're Christian - doesn't make them Christian. It's like saying you're a car because you're standing in a garage. The proof is in the way someone lives their life. Pope Francis is a good Christian. .

    the mentioned bishop had already regreted and asked for forgiveness. he is now content in living a simple life alone somewhere. so let's give him a second chance to prove to God he is truly sorry. Don't judge so you will not be judged. Sometimes power and wealth blinds even a holy person. That's why many people changed when they are in power. What's important is that when you realized you had been wrong, you repented and changed your life.

    None of this should come at any surprise to the well informed. The best way to describe il Papa is that he's acting out the ideal of what a Catholic is supposed to be. I was educated by Jesuits (as he is) and this is EXACTLY how they taught us to act and behave. To be fair, Jesuits are a different breed of Catholic, the very antithesis of the anti-intellectuals you often see today. They were universally hated by the Church, in large part because they were more intellectual and spiritual (rather than religious and dogmatic), which naturally led to a continuous questioning of authority.

    I have to be frank here. The point of the Pope is to sheapherd the flock...The past popes have not done such a great job of this. They have taken the church so far away from the gospel message that the church of today looks nothing like the Church of Christ. This pope is making grand strides to correct that disasterous course. All I can say is out of all of the past pontiffs, Pope Francis has nothing but my undiying respect for finally standing up and saying we are doing it wrong.

  • @Darksido

    This is why you lose credibility sometimes TYT. You sometimes criticize things that are irrelevant like his official clothes; or making assumptions about his sexual preference like it was something negative. Let's say this greedy fuck is gay (sexuality still an assumption); is it really necessary to joke about "rent boys" or "being gay"? You need to understand that those sorts of comments: making a connection between someone who is obviously corrupt and his sexual preference as a focus are distasteful to many viewers, and particularly to the gay community. They actually fall into prejudice. The news is that he is a thief or avaricious person and the pope is doing something about it; good, comment on that. I am an anti-theist so this has nothing to do with religion, and I have defended you on a few occasions when I observe your opinions are supported, so is nothing personal. I sense you are fairly friendly to the LGBT community, but in the back of your heads there is an amount of machismo that jumps from time to time. So I would recommend taking a little consideration before how certain ideas are expressed. Best of luck and have a great 2015.

      Or their talk about "Vow of Poverty"... I'm not Catholic, but I'm 100% sure that doesn't exist anymore. That was the Medieval Monks. I find anyone that listens to these guys and actually believes half the things they say are tools. Time to to grow up, get off your ass, and do legitimate research before you open your mouth. And yeah, if it's on a right wing or christian topic, TYT becomes absolute hypocritical. They bash people who mistreat stereotypes, then turn around and do what they say is wrong.

    • @mycosys
      @mycosys 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Brady “Bradygg” Gordish you are 100% wrong - the vow of poverty does exist, they technically do not own anything, they have turned their lives over to the church. but feel free to rant in ignorance without checking. It is ironic you criticise them for doing exactly what you are doing, not they.

      +Darksido maybe you should use that tiny brain of yours- the gay comment was about the church being so homophobic, and why should they not criticise those ridiculous garments that they have clung to for so long, since they were an the all powerful rulers of europe and made owning bibles illegal and sold forgiveness. I don't think you should get too hung up on the actual amount of money he spent on the renovations until you saw what he was renovating.
    As an example, there's a bishop or cardinal in Italy (i think) who lives in a old-school roman villa with a massive garden, cluttered with frescoes, mosaics and marble statues, sculpted trees and a working antique fountain, that has been maintained til this day. It's incredibly expensive to renovate and maintain, but it's a historic... dare I say monument?

    Poverty for the church with its own bank?

    • @michaelbrunsdon635
      @michaelbrunsdon635 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The "Vatican Bank" is actually called the "Institute for the Works of Religion" and is a bank within the Vatican City. It's assets are not held by the Holy See, however the institute's surplus is available for the Holy to use in it's mission regarding works of religion and charity. It is not a central bank and is not a department of the Roman Curia which is the central administration of the Roman Catholic Church. Further to this, there is no requirement for priests or laypeople to live a life of poverty. Certain religious orders do give up their possession, like the Franciscans - but that is a discipline they place on themselves.

    • @technowey
      @technowey 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +CDenic - Most Catholic priests I know live modestly. The churches I know that are Catholic churches give most of their money to the community, and to Catholic charities. The money comes from parishioners who donate it. These parishioners, along with other churches, not all Catholic, periodically purchase food supplies and drop them off at their respective churches to give food to the shelters.
      Then there is my uncle, who was a missionary, who spend his entire live living in poor communities, one where he successfully got funds to build a school and.. due to education, it went from a ghetto to a thriving village in a few decades.
      None of the things I mentioned require that the recipients are Catholics, or even Christians. The help goes to anyone in need.
      People like vilifying people who are suppose to be good. Most people are good. There are always a few bad applies.
      Oh, and by the way, the Catholic Church isn't anywhere near the top of the richest organizations. I'm not sure it would even appear on the first page of such a list. The church does collect millions of dollars from millions of Catholics, but relatively little of that stays in the organization.
      If this story is true (and I have no reason to think it's not, but this is the Internet - I do expect it is true) then this Bishop was scamming people by spending money that should have gone to others. He's not only the exception, he's an extreme case.

    Pope Francis lived among poor people. He spent years helping and teaching the 'forgotten' one. After he accepted the position imposed on him by his Cardinal brethren. He changed from his traditional Cardinal clothes to his papacy clothes, he asked for simplicity, a white rope instead of the fancy attire and told his assistants...the carnival is over. His residency, his shoes, the car he wants to use, etc. wolves dressed as sheep are everywhere, the church is not an exception but he will find those looking for luxury while serving as priests of the Lord.

    This is not a new thing. This Pope is reacting to the fact that its membership is bleeding away from the church every single day. It's nice for a change, to see a pope who is not egotistical about his status, is intolerant of this behavior and tolerant of the rest of society.

    Why can't the Pope suspend Bishops? According to Roman Catholic doctrine the Pope is The Vicar of Christ and pastor of the entire Catholic church. As such he has full, supreme, and universal power over the whole Church, a power which he can always exercise unhindered:that, in brief, the Pope enjoys, by divine institution, supreme, full, immediate, and universal power. In other words the Pope is answerable only to God; the Vatican is NOT a democracy. It's called Papal Supremacy.

    True. I sort of live in a dualism on that; I live in Germany, where both catholic and protestant churches have their members taxed by the state. But as I am a christian not belonging to neither confession, I don't pay church tax. The US did a good job in seperating church and state (although religion and state still seem way too interlinked), but as long as a lot of countries still have church taxes, the church can rely on that. If it couldn't, I believe the church would look a lot different.

Also, keep in mind how much other high ranking Catholics freak out whenever Francis said that atheists can have morals, so he's probably scared to death of speaking out against the church's insane anti-birth control laws. In terms if priests taking a vow of poverty. In general there are two types of priests; one is a priest who is part of a specific order like the Benedictin, Dominican or Franciscan or Trappists Orders. Those who belong to this do take vows of poverty. The priests who work in parishes such as the Bishop do NOT need to take a vow of poverty. I was a Catholic from cradle until I was about 27 years of age. Of course I Note what the Bishop did was totally unacceptable and God Forsaken!

The fact is no matter where that guy lives there are homeless children, and anyone who was truly living his life to serve any god, and set an example to others to do the same, would make do with a $30,000 car and a $200,000 house just so they could use the extra money to do "gods work" and help the less fortunate in their community.

    If you write an article, it doesn't sound impressive if you say 2 million were spent on renovating the wooden structure of the roof. Another 3 million to update the insolation; 2.5 million to make the basement water-damage-proof, etc. 20,000 for the bathtub shows the bling-part, because it was an actual personal choice, most of the cost was probably not related to the bishops' tastes.

    Back in history only certain people can afford to actually hire music composers to write their hymns, since the church is soo rich, they can afford to hire composers like Bach, Mozart...etc.
    It's either the church, royalty or extremely rich lords and barons.

    And contraception does not directly lead to mass poverty. Seeing as a lot of people that use contraceptives are in poverty, it's not really changing anything. There was mass poverty before mass availability of contraceptives

    You have to keep in mind that that bishop's residence is probably adjacent to the church and probably several hundreds of years old. Renovating this kind of buildings is inherently expensive. All the work is probably made by hand craftsmen working with traditional tools and materials that are often expensive.

    How does a bishop even have the AUTHORISATION to spend 55 million dollars of church money?

  • @0Fyrebrand0
    @0Fyrebrand0 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Even if the entirety of the $55 M really did go into his home, it's still corruption. I would almost rather he DID just pocket the majority of that money, so that he at least has the option of throwing some of that out to charity, or helping people, or having to give it back if/when he gets caught. Instead, the money is already spent and its potential has been all but destroyed by being converted into material crap.

Then on the 7th day he said, "these sandals have no arch support and my dogs are barkin, so I must enter the house of pampering for rest, a foot massage, and a pedicure" and he did, and it was good. Then all rejoiced and said damn, that dude is fly. and he was, and it was good

    TYT I understand that you are not Christians but please be respectful of your audience who are just the way you would be of other religions. Christians aren't perfect, we are people like you. There are a lot of good Christians and also a lot of struggling ones. No one is perfect but speaking so poorly about the pope while praising him in the same sentence doesn't make sense. He's trying to be a good pope. Lets support that.

    Many people looks surprised about how Francis talks. This is how the catholic church acts and think (not all of it, but the biggest part) in South America. Many lost town in the middle of nowhere have nothing but a church. Many poor (slums) neighbourhoods have very little government assistance, so they rely on their local church (At this point I should said, evangelical churches do this too). So they DO care for the poor and they are very progressive compared to the 1st world church.

    I don't know about you, but at least the church doesn't impose an obligatory 10% donation. You can donate or not, and you'll still be considered for their sacraments. Also, in my church, they give an annual financial report from a third party (so no bias) about where the donations go. We are perfectly informed about the financial needs of the church.

    The religious priests do not all take a vow of poverty.
    The Bureau of Labor Statistics includes priests in its "clergy" category. Members of this category earn an average yearly salary of $46,960, or $22.58 per hour, based on 2009 information. Those in the lower 10th percentile make $22,940. In the 90th percentile, the average salary is $75,320.
    Not shabby wages for talking to an imaginary friend and working one day a week.

    Not really, the Germanic tribes who destroyed the Western Roman Empire were mostly Arrian Christians, they didn't recognise the Bishop of Rome or the Nicene Creed, the Germans didn't really start becoming Catholic until around the 8th Century. And the Eastern Roman Empire lasted until 1453 and was the center of the Greek Orthodox Church, in schism with Rome for about 1000 years, so no, the Church isn't just the old Roman Empire it came later.
