    I have been dehydrating foods for over 15 years....tried almost everything ( strawberries are wonderful smelling and fills the house with pleasant pong, shrimps are good too....but like onions move the dehydrator into the shed! ). I do not like celery to eat raw....it's horrible. Dehydrated it is brilliant. We dry it and blitz it into a powder and add a teaspoon to soups and stews it's a game changer. It also helps there is almost always celery in the reduced section of the supermarkets. Enjoying your vids, keep it up and have fun.

    I have bought a small dehydrator to try out and done some mushrooms and sweet peppers today, I hope I’ve done them right because as it’s been so dull here the solar panels were off for most of the time and the electricity it took rather took me by surprise, Next time I’ll make sure the panels have kicked in. Rather excited to try them out (eating)in something so these may only last a couple of weeks. I think I’m going to try some fruit next as I have some ys lemons in the fridge and quite a lot of raspberries in the freezer. Jane

    haven't read all the comments but if you don't have a salad spinner you can use a clean dish towel (the linen glass towels are best - less fluff) - you put your wet salad leaves/spinach in the middle of the spread-out towel, gather the corners into one hand - step outside and crank - the centrifugal force is more than that salad spinner you've got there and more effective than dabbing with paper towels

    I absolutely take the stems off of my spinach, Tilly. I toss them into a ziplock bag and freeze them along with other scraps,(like everything but the stems of the pepper parts that went in your compost!), and wait until I have enough to make vegetable broth.
    BTW, I back my spinach/kale in because they dry so quickly and shrink so quickly that it doesn't matter if the trays touch. I have done a lot of leafy greens.

    Good video and tip about the stalks Tilly 😊. Just a wee thought about your garden next year, you could keep the pepper seeds from the red peppers for sowing next year. I don’t think the ones from green or yellow peppers are mature enough to be viable but could be worth a try to see if they germinate

    So inspired by you we took the plunge and bought one! We had been thinking of one for a while but your vlogs made me realise with our allotment and storage issues with freezer space it would be a good investment. It came today and am so excited to get using it but having a problem with the timer. Put it on for a while to do the cleaning thing but it won't switch off! Does yours switch off straight away if you turn the timer to zero? I thought it might run on for a short while like the oven does but it is still going after 30 minutes.

    • @rootofavalon3841
      @rootofavalon3841  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I hope you like yours as much as I like mine Sharon... With my timer I have noticed that it switches off when it goes past the zero mark... so if I put the timer on for 1 hour, it will switch off after about 1 and a half hours as it. It seems like the timer switch has been put on at slightly the wrong angle.

    Very nice! So what is your experience so far? Are you loving your machine yet? I use mine so often. It is good to use it all you can before electric prices climb even more or there is a blackout. Make sure to store water if you do not have a well or a way to get clean water without electricity. You will need lots more water to cook dehydrated food.

      I haven't worked it out for myself yet, but according to other people that have been using them for a while in the facebook group I'm in, they cost about 10p an hour... they are low wattage, and for the things I've dehydrated so far, I've only had it on low heat, and I always do it through the night when the electric is cheaper... plus it has the added advantage of warming the kitchen up a little so I don't have the heating on! 😃

      I thought exactly the same thing. If a dehydrator uses 800watts of power and I'm not sure what size that is, the time, effort and electricity cost may not make it feasible. At the end of the day fresh spinach would always be best. I think dehydrating things which are seasonal may be better as they can go up in price out of season. Bananas take 6 to 12 hours to dehydrate. That's an awful long time to run something, the same size as a small microwave or an oven on low. My mum used to grow her own vegies, blanch and then freeze, but they only cost the price of seeds or seedlings, so she was already in front financially. Maybe she would have stopped if the cost of using a freezer had gone up to the price it is now. I live totally offgrid and use electric appliances, rather than gas for cooking as gas costs me, whereas my power is free.
