  • College football is a prominent and beloved aspect of American sports culture, deeply ingrained in the traditions and identities of many universities across the country. Here are some key aspects to explore further:
History and Evolution: College football has a rich history dating back to the mid-19th century, with the first game believed to have been played in 1869 between Rutgers and Princeton. Since then, the sport has evolved significantly, with changes in rules, playing styles, and the development of various conferences and divisions within the NCAA.
NCAA Divisions: College football is organized into different divisions within the NCAA, primarily the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) and the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS), with each division having its own postseason structure and national championship.
Conferences: Teams in college football are grouped into conferences based on geographical location and historical affiliations. Some of the most prominent conferences in the FBS include the Southeastern Conference (SEC), the Big Ten Conference, the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC), the Pac-12 Conference, and the Big 12 Conference, among others.
Bowl Games: College football culminates in a series of postseason bowl games, which are traditional matchups between teams from different conferences. These bowl games provide an opportunity for teams to showcase their talents on a national stage and often carry significant prestige and financial rewards.
College Football Playoff (CFP): The CFP is the culmination of the college football season, featuring a four-team playoff to determine the national champion at the FBS level. The playoff was introduced in 2014 as a successor to the Bowl Championship Series (BCS) and has since become the premier postseason event in college football.
Rivalries and Traditions: College football is renowned for its fierce rivalries and longstanding traditions, which play a significant role in the culture of the sport. Rivalry games often date back decades or even over a century and carry immense importance for the teams and their fans.
Impact and Influence: College football has a significant impact beyond the field, shaping university identities, generating revenue for athletic programs and universities, and serving as a focal point for alumni engagement and community pride.
Exploring these aspects further can provide a deeper understanding of the intricacies and significance of college football in American sports culture.

Interesting. You don't want to have a school or two in the lucrative Texas TV market? Fox does. Remember, we are not talking about athletics or academics in this conference realignment craziness, we are talking about who can sell beer & soap ads well enough for Fox/CBS/NBC & ESPN spending so much money on the B1G & SEC. Hogwash utah is never going to be invited to the Big 10, their market 1.1 million households is too small. It was the smallest in the PAC, and they split that small number with BYU. BYU is fortunate to have a national brand.

BYU is a thing of the past and hasn't done a damn thing in almost three decades despite their fanbase and brand. Utah is the here and now, and has made a significant impact on college football world since the Urban Meyer days. Whittingham has taken Utah to a whole another level. Like Boise St and TCU, Utah has earned everything on the field they have without a so-called "national brand." If BYU is trying to boost their program to the P4 level, then they better figure it out! If Utah didn't exist, BYU would still be struggling to remain revelant. Utah just so happens to be a damn good football program that BYU is trying to compete with for the top spot in the state of Utah. Unfortunately for BYU fans, they just don't have what it takes to be a P4 school and probably won't regardless of who they hire for coaches or recruits. So if Utah stands in BYUs way to remain relevant, then that's not a Utah problem, that's a BYU problem.

The biggest problem I see with this “super league” is that when there are only so many seats at the table it will end up killing the sport all together. By doing this you now have the upper Midwest and south east that is interested in the sport, but no one else. College football isn’t the NFL it depends on local or alumni ties to care about it. So by splitting into these more exclusive leagues the SEC and BIG10 that money I predict will dry up.

You guys aren't differentiating the future of Cable TV Industry and College Athletics Associations. You assume they have complete mutual interests and they do not. The conference associations were created to make regional associations for competition against historical centers for college athletics such as Notre Dame and the primary state schools. The college athletics associations are against the interests of limiting industry participation. Same as the interests of TH-cam are opposite the interests of Disney and Fox. WVU and Tech are described as attractive targets because they have the more intrinsic monetary value in Athletics as a member of the Big 12 Association than selected current members of the SEC or Big 10 such as Vanderbilt or Northwestern. Absent a competing new association, The Big 12 would consequently acquire an additional target school with the most intrinsic value. The conference association is naturally nonbeneficial to the school with the highest income from athletics and beneficial to the low athletic income schools. There is no long term benefit from only one conference. That's why Notre Dame, one of the historically highest grossing schools for college athletics has never joined a conference.

relegation is the way to go(include both FBS & FCS, maybe div 2 & 3), but with that there are no more easy games at the top. football & basketball need to be separated from the other sports for conferences(maybe each have their own). media contracts should be negotiated by a single college football commission, they should include a flat rate for the level of play the team is at plus bonusses for viewership, and post-season play. the commission would also negotiate player benefits/rights with a player union. but a relegation model would really incentivize better play all around.

I think at this point, it is obvious that this is where we are heading. Since Fox said they did the deal with the Big 12 because they wanted to maintain a presence in Texas, I think Fox adds Tech & Houston to their B1G conference. This gives them a chunk of the DFW and Houston markets. Tech has one of the largest alumni and new student base in DFW and certainly the most passionate & loyal in all sports. Tech draws more fans to the Tech/TCU game in FW than TCU does, to the point to where you have to buy a 3 game plan if you want to buy a ticket to the Tech/TCU game. While UT & TAMU own the Houston market, the Coogs can get a lot of attention when they are winning.

@@observer466WVU is the flagship university of its state, no small consideration when the SEC is severely limited in the number of new states it can expand into that can be considered "southeastern". The state's northern panhandle where Morgantown is located lies just miles from its borders with Ohio and Pennsylvania---two large B-10 states. Also, WVU has a large passionate fan base in this region that travels well. Just look at the huge number of fans WVU sent to the Mayo Bowl this year.
I think WVU should definitely be on the SEC's short list (and I'm not even a WVU fan-----lol).

Unfortunately you don't know much about football but that's okay most people don't but West Virginia is the 15th most winningest team and West Virginia has about 2 million people not counting all the fans that moved, with good TV ratings and great rivalries with pitt backyard brawl and others. WVU also travels well we packed Charlotte stadium with 90% of mountaineer fans against the tar heels and beat them 30 to 10 this year. We have pretty much owned the ACC in about every bowl game. Even beat the SEC bulldogs in a bowl game. We lost two national championship games one to Notre Dame unfortunately. I could go on and on.

Maybe, maybe not, but we will sell a lot of DFW TV advertising, which is what the networks want. CFB is not what it used to be, it is owned by the networks, get used to it, like it or not. Also, we will probably see unequal revenue sharing in the B1G and SEC in the very near future.

Sir I’m going to need you to do some research before you make a blanket statement. TCU viewership is higher than most big 12 schools not named Texas & OU. If TCU leaves the Big 12. The conference is done with. Everybody in this conference should be rooting for TCU to be good every year for relevance. The big 12 got its TV deal largely because of the TCU squad that played in the Natty.

    "I'm a die-hard BYU fan..."
Yeah... no shit. The reality that all BYU fans can't seem to understand is that NOBODY CARES YOU HAVE A BIG FANBASE.
In 2010, all the P5 conferences added teams and nobody wanted or was interested in BYU and guess what... The Big XII wasn't interested even if Holmoe and Mendenhall begged for 6 years for an invite.
If Texas and Oklahoma never left, the team down south would still be a wannabe Notre Dame independent. That's a fact.
"I think BYU is the most powerful but I don't know if that translates into TV ratings..."
The delusion is strong with this one. Nobody cares about the team down south outside of Utah. Their TV ratings are and have been terrible, regulated to Thursday and Friday night games with an occasional ABC bone given on a Saturday afternoon. Which nobody watched either.
This is what Ute fans deal with every year... A tds fanbase whose team hasn't done squat in 30 years but think "they're the most powerful" because of some kind of irrational logic of having a big fanbase.
Win some games first, win more than 5 games first, win a Big XII Championship first, make the playoffs first before you start calling yourselves "the most powerful."
...and you thought Texas was bad, wait until the tds gets a little success in football and tell me in 5-10 years if the tds doesn't remind you of Texas and that statement was just a little taste of what's to come. Hilarious.
