  • We're baling something different today! I'm sad to say it's not our cotton this year, but let's take a look at the John Deere CP690, and see what we can learn from my neighbor Todd Rovey with Flying R Farms about cotton and picking. He's kind of a big deal around here.. people know him. Hope you all enjoy the short break from hay!

I started farming in the late 70s ang grew my first crop of cotton in 1984.
For the first 3 years we hauled cotton to the gin in wagons. We got our first module builder in 87 and we used modules til 2012. In 13 we bought a 3 year old 7760 round bale picker for just a shade under 1/2 mil. It just finished it's 11th crop for us.

I worked at John Deere Des Moines Works working with the cotton design engineers in developing new parts back in the ‘90’s. Some of those same parts are still used today, primarily on the picking units. My role changed as they were beginning work on the concept that became the round bale picker. Very nice video. Keep up the good work.

most of my neighbors are now buying the John Deere CS770 with 12 rows. They harvest charge 13 cents/ lb in the round bale. We are in the upper Panhandle using a corn cotton rotation. We put on about 5" of water in the summer to make 2.5 to 3 bales per acre. My grade is 21 color, 37 staple, 44 mic, 34 gpt 40 staple is the min for Pima cotton. Is your AZ upland cotton much different grade?
What does the grading show for your cotton.

Interesting! My wife's family grows dryland stripper cotton in West Texas. With the drought over the last 5 years or so they've had more crop failures than crops that went to the gin. They have also had plants that grew too tall in wet years. Very interesting crop.

Whether it's a round bale of cotton or cotton module (L 32'x W 8'x H 8'-10') it is completely raw cotton. Cotton Lint, Cotton Seeds, leaves from the plant, sticks & stems, cotton bolls (unopened cotton pod/Bloom) even rocks.

There are some videos on TH-cam that will show how a cotton gin works. The type of cotton and how it is Ginned. Irrigated cotton typically picked by a spindle cotton picker. Whereas in the Southern plains they typically use what is called a stripper cotton picker.

Cotton seed makes excellent cattle feed when it's mixed with grain and/or silage.
      It's high in protein.
We use a mixture of corn silage, ground corn, cotton seed and peanut hay. And we typically add molasses to the mixture.
It allows for faster weight gain and better marbling.
