    Nice job!! Your starts look great! You guys did a great job setting things up! I use led shop lights. I built a rolling table 4ft x 8ft in my heated garage, hung the lights in a row and plunged them in to the ceiling plug. I roll my table in and out when I can 👍🏻it's working fantastic 👍🏻 my starts are huge! I purchased a couple heat mats for starting my tomatoes and peppers. The ones I started with heat sprouted twice as fast and did much better. You can also put a string of mini incandescent Christmas light in a pan under your starts and it will heat the soil enough to expedite the germination. I love that your teaching this! It works really really well! I am growing lots of extra plants so I can share with our friends, family, and neighbors. I'm encouraging everyone to at least grow a pot of edibles if not a full garden.

    good ventilation is the key to avoid moisture, mold and seeds that will go bad in their seedling beds. Love your videos as always. Thank you.

    Just my 2 cents! You'd better gradually start converting those T8 fluorescents to LEDs now! My husband has been an electrician for over 30 years. Navy Electrician, residential, commercial and now industrial specializing in robotics. A few years ago he gave me T8 shop lights he got for free from work because they were upgrading to LEDs. I have started expanding and adding more shelving for my grow lights in a different room. We are expanding with LEDs. . My husband says that although florescent lights are cheaper than LEDs, they don't last as long, are becoming more outdated and will become obsolete because everything is being converted to LEDs. Even T4s and T5s which are newer than T8s are becoming obsolete. Which means they are going to become harder and harder to find. So he says down the line you are still either going to have to buy an LED converter for those T8's or replace them entirely with the latest LED units and lights. Which from his view point delaying and having to replace them all at one time once they become obsolete is costly & unwise. Since prepping is planning for the future, then going with LEDs now is upping your game!

    Thanks for another great episode! I agree wholeheartedly with the need to "up your game" in producing more food in these uncertain times. Used growlights for the first time this year to start my seedlings on January 1st! I used card tables, but really like the shelving that you used. We found 4-bulb fluorescent shop lights for next to nothing on Marketplace, but they increased the electric bill quite a bit. Will invest in LED next year. Really got a headstart on the garden! Cabbages already forming heads, tomato plants already loaded with tomatoes, loaded pepper plants, everything thriving outside! I even followed your advice and used winter sowing for some things, which turned out great.

    Way off subject but wanted you to know I tried your 'freezer/root storage' system this past winter. I had contacted you with a question or two last year and you had answered and said to get back to you after I had tried it-and here is me getting back to you. That worked even better than I had hoped. I left 5 or 6 potatoes in it just to see how long I could push it and as of 3 days ago they were like I had just put them in. THANK YOU-great idea and thanks for video showing the how-to.

    I've been using these for decades and they totally work. My advice? Play rock music for them. I leave the radio on for them with Classic Rock and say a prayer when I plant the seeds. They grow like crazy! Crazy being a good thing in this situation. :D

    This is amazing! There is no way I could afford a $1000.00 ready made seed starting rack. I bought a rack like yours and a set of 4 shop lights from Sam's. It sounds like I need more shop lights.
    We haven't put it together yet, but this is fortuitous timing.
    How long are you supposed to have the lights on seedlings?

      Hey Ann...here are 2 options from Home Depot for you to consider:
      Option 1 is a set of 2 LED shop lights (with 2 lights each) for about $50. These come as a unit ready to use.
      Honeywell 4 ft. 50-Watt Equivalent 5000 Lumens Linkable Integrated LED White Shop Light 5000K (2-Pack)
      Model #SH450505Q200
      Option 2 is the 2 items below. The Lithonia 1233 RE is the fixture to hold the Phillips bulbs.
      Lithonia Lighting 2-Light White T8 Fluorescent Residential Shop Light
      Model #1233 RE
      Philips 32-Watt 4 ft. Linear T8 ALTO Fluorescent Tube Light Bulb Daylight (5000K) (2-Pack)

  • @Adol666
    @Adol666 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    This sounds like a great Idea and you can do it but dont. Ill tell you why. First shop lights are HIGHLY inefficient and produce a ton of heat. Also your Electricity bill is going to go through the roof. Especially with this many lights. Trust me spend the money and get good Efficient LED lights. You might have to spend more upfront but you will save a ton of money on your electricity bill

    Ice Age Farmer said to start seedings in containers big enough to grow a 4-5 inch plant. I didn't have 5-6 inch containers so I used smaller 3 inch ones. FAIL! As they grew the roots didn't have enough depth and they became thin and weak and many eventually died. Transplanting them to a larger container shocked the plant and most died. My next batch was large containers and all are doing great.

      There is a gentleman who does a really nice job of teaching how to handle seedlings from germination to transplants to care once established. He lays it out very simple and it's very informative. I have had many gardens and I still glean lots of great info from him. Gardening is one of those things that you never stop learning new tips and tricks about! I think that is why I'm enjoying Kylene's videos so much! She does such a great job of including tons of valuable information!
      His channel is the rusted gardener (I think, it may be the rusted garden). Another great learning tool is migardener. Both are great educational resources for even fully seasoned gardeners. I'm glad your new starts are doing well! I'm sure it was frustrating to loose the first batch! Always a bummer to have your plants die!

    So, if I get this right, each shelf needs a minimum of 5000 lumens? (2 lights with minimum of 2500 lumens each)?

    • @JonathanBJones
      @JonathanBJones 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Hannah...Most of our shelves have 4 bulbs each at around 2500 lumens each, so 10,000 lumens. But you can certainly do some good growing with 2 bulbs or 5000 lumens. Each situation is different. I would start with 5000 lumens and do some experimenting. Also, the amount of natural sun your plants get will influence this. I would love to hear where you end up! Thanks for being part of the solution!

    • @JonathanBJones
      @JonathanBJones 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@cuocsongtaiarapxeut4988 Some plants will grow in "normal" light. However, most plants need more intense light, often for longer duration. With grow lights you get the right spectrum of light along with an intensity that promotes growth and fruiting. With good grow lights, the amount of food you can produce increases dramatically. If you cannot have grow lights. You can do some reasonable growing in a sunny window, preferably one without the low e coatings. Way to be getting it all figured out!
