The most important message I have to add :
This guy is passionate at his gardening. But you can do things simpler and not as optimized and it will still work. If u never grew a plant from seeds just do it!
For Kids and Beginners that want to try to start from seeds i recommend sun flowers or beans. Both is a very easy and is a fast germer/grower.

Best video on the subject I have ever seen! The only thing I do differently ..is that I loosely over fill the plug trays which are in a larger tray to catch the overfill... I quickly level them off with a wide plastic trowel typically used for drywall. Then I give the tray one quick drop which gives me about 3/8th's of an inch to drop the seed which I then lightly cover with soil again and level off again. Works well and is quick.

Thank you so much for explaining everything so carefully. You have made everything so plain that I think I'll be able to do it right this year. I am a 60-year-old disabled veteran that is learning that I better learn how to garden quickly so that we can grow our own food. I feel like it's a huge responsibility and that having a garden is a lot like having a baby it requires a lot of attention and care. I live in Eastern Kentucky but I never had to grow anything before. I'm thankful for your channel and I'll be watching all your videos.

@MoniHeiser Thank you for your service! 🙏🏼
I started gardening at about 5 yrs of age & have always found joy in the whole process.
It's a great lesson for *all* children to witness the miracle of a seed turning into food.
Now I'm a disabled pensioner & live in a tiny apartment. I usually start a container garden on my balcony in late spring.
But this year I tried gardening indoors in the dead of winter with a couple of grow lights. I feel as you do about a responsibility to grow food with all that's going on.
Well, it worked! I have more food than I can eat or store. So I'm sharing with the other pensioner neighbours!
      Cheers,
      🐱

Just remember plants know how to grow and once established really shouldn’t be that much work except for enjoying your harvest. Stay observant to catch Insect issues, water problems either to much or or not enough and those pesky little critters that can reek havoc. Yes gardening is work but should be enjoyable work sometimes we gotta remind ourselves that. Thanks for your service cheers

i just watched this again, march 28th 2023, and i thought i was late starting my seeds. good to hear the second week of april is when to start tomats and peps. i started about 10 days ago with everything i will grow this year. kales and lettuces, radishes and beets, tomatoes and peppers.i still have a dozen or so chards growing from last year, and fed me all winter. this is my second year and i planted direct in the ground last time. dang, i thot the seedlings were weeds and pulled them up. wondered why i didn't get any peppers last season! this year i am using trays, and i see what they look like, they look just like weeds! i am gonna keep a close watch on temps, my greenhouse got over 100 degrees today. all my stuff is up so i will have to keep those temps down now. thanks for this important tip. also raccoons are digging big holes everywhere so i will put up a fence. not sure if that will keep them out since they are really good at climbing. a dog would do the trick, i don't have time to take care of it so that's out. maybe i can borrow yours!! HAHA!

Makes me feel like I can do this too, as I have long struggled with anxiety and trying new things has been something of a sore topic . it's so hard to get started sometimes- but you're right, the failures in gardening are the most important part. How else would we learn? It's easy for me to get discouraged when something fails in the garden, and then I won't realize that I learned new techniques until the next spring when I know what not to do. :)

I started as a teenager, digging a new flower and veggie garden for my Mom. Once I reached 20 I got into studying, big time, about horticulture... whatever books, etc I was able to get my hands on. I really commend you on doing a fabulous job, getting as many details as possible about seed starting into a short video ! People who are just beginning to grow from scratch really need to know these details, as it saves a LOT of trial and error, money, and heartache.... having done all the prep, planting, and everything that goes into it...only to have their hopes of something beautiful happen as the result of all they put into it, as I had experienced many, many times when starting out. So, again: GREAT JOB !!

I live in South Central Minnesota (zone 4b) And I found all of his information about tomato starting absolutely brilliant. We must have a similar growing zones. I always start my plants too early. I am so ready for spring that I feel like an almost will warmer weather is by starting my plants indoors... And I almost always regret it because they get long and spindly And absolutely ridiculous to try to maneuver. I will definitely be trying this method with my tomatoes this year... Starting late April and transplanting mid-may. 1000 thank yous!

Once you've known an avid gardener that got cryptococcal meningitis (probably from potting mix), you'll always be overcautious and wear a mask when opening a new bag of potting mix.
It really can cause massive damage if it's not caught early.

Thanks so much! I’d never thought of sifting my potting soil before! And the proper timing really makes sense to me now. I was really trying to get my garden in the ground as soon as my last frost date but even after my last frost date, things have still been too cold for anything to thrive. It’s just now starting to warm up and I’m having to do a lot of replanting of things that just didn’t do well in the colder weather.

I noticed this one year when I bought tomato and pepper plants from the local garden center. They were nice looking in the store, makes me want to start off my garden. But when I got them to my garden, they didn't take off for several more weeks. They looked like they were the same size all that time. I finally figured out that the stores may be selling them early on but it doesn't mean it's actually the right time for them to be growing in my local area. So up top, they didn't do much, but down below, their roots were still doing OK and continuing to get bigger..

So it was always there as a working station, and I could use the bungeeness of the ropes to quick like clean whatever I was cleaning out of my soil, sometimes roots for reusing the soil after adding nutrients to it
