At the start when James Brown sang, "it's a man's world" (the 2nd time) the camera pans to Pavarotti, and he's having a great chuckle...ever wondered what he was thinking?
      .
      .
      .
      .
      .
      In case you were:
      James Brown: It's a man's world, it's a man's world.
Luciano Pavarotti: You might think so, but that's only because you haven't performed, or worked with Marilyn Horne and Joan Sutherland yet.

Thank you, Fil, for this really interesting analysis. Since I listen to opera a lot, I found it particularly interesting. Though Pavarotti was a great opera singer, I have always felt that there are many in the ‘great’ range, but each with different aspects of greatness. The greatness of Pavarotti, for me, was always his wonderful vocal timbre, his unique voice, and his effortlessness of range. But for hi Cs, there are quite a few great opera singers who can achieve this, but of course, have their own unique vocal timbre. The Bel Canto singing repertoire that has all the high C’s is more popular now, and Pavarotti came in at a time when it was just coming back, and he really rocked the world with his gifted voice, a very powerful and beautiful voice.
The falsetto aspect is also really interesting when you look at countertenors who sing in the range of a mezzo soprano - some with higher ranges, some with lower ranges. But they are reluctant to call it falsetto, as it indicates something false with that label. Rather, many prefer to refer to it as simply the true head voice in conjunction with techniques of control. I was surprised to find some of the most beautiful voices in opera in this group called countertenors. Though they are in opera, their greatest repertoire seems to be the Baroque compositions.
Some opera tenors who only sing with the chest voice would never consider using a head voice. Others used both, as you described. Pavarotti would use his head voice at times to get a soft sound, as in the last act of Il Trovatore when his character speaks gently with his mother. Of course, he didn’t have to, but used it for its effect. ‘Nadir’s aria’ in the opera, ‘The Pearl Fishers’ by Bizet can be sung entirely in the chest voice, but because it is describing a dream that happens as the character is about to sleep, some sing using both voices, allowing the head voice to give it a softer sound without the power of the chest voice.
Just love your analysis, and just wanted to share. Thanks!

Ha - G4-A4 has also been the top end wall of my purely chest voice for years! (I can routinely sing down to a C#2, even a A1 [no vocal fry lameness] in the morning, but who wants to hear that?) Used to be able to do Sammy Hagar style chest-head mixes up to E5-F#5 late teens to mid 20s. No more!

Fil... Great analysis I thoroughly enjoyed it! I have seen this video several times and it is one of my favorites. I have been a fan ofJamesBrown and Luciano Pavarotti for years. Their musical styles and approach to performing are light years apart but it works when performing together. You can tell by the glances and smiles they have when the other is performing that they are definitely members of mutual admiration.Even though the title of this song is not PC, it provides an excellent platform for these two fantastic singers to display their talents. These two guys are in their 60s and still performing at this level of excellence...is truly amazing.

Well, thank you so much for this. Your ability to make totally accessible videos about a subject like vocal technique and applying it to two such different artists as James and Luciano is fascinating and a clue to their greatness, whatever the musical genre may be. It makes us look at them in a different light.
The one singer who I think just simply ignored moving through chest voice to head voice and falsetto was the incomparable Ella Fitzgerald and I hope you might find a slot for her and the last of the great classical pop/jazz singers Tony Bennett who's still singing well at 93 years of age! Thanks again.

Again, I had the great fortune to film James Brown. He was performing at the River Rock Casino in a Vancouver suburb. It was difficult for me to concentrate on my work because I was in awe of a legendary singer I had admired for ever. It was a great show but you could tell he didn’t have the energy to do his old act. This was in January of 2006, and sadly he was gone by December that year. I never had the good fortune to meet Pavarotti 👍🤘

Pavarotti was an incredible singer and sounded even more incredible in an opera house... He wasn't as loud as people think he was, but he had a very big voice. I loved this performance but, alas, I would have preferred it if Fil had analyzed Pavarotti & James Brown in their classic duet of Papa's Got a Brand New Bag. It is remarkable to see Luciano doing windmills & other advanced break dance moves. In fact, there is an ongoing debate in Europe about who invented the moonwalk: Pavarotti or Michael Jackson.

@@wingsofpegasus I highly recommend it. A great place to start familiarizing is her cover of i Put a Spell on You where she plays tribute to the original artist by following his style rather than the many others who covered it. She was 9. She is Norwegian and began singing at about 2 or 3 and was raised on jazz from birth practically. Once down this rabbit hole it's an amazing journey. Along with The Warning she gives me great hope for the youth of today. 14 now and was amazing on AGT champions (she won Norway's GT at 7-8)

April S thanks man. He has a similar duet with George Benson I stumbled across a while back. It looks like the same location and setup. I’ll have to check out the series. Thank you so much for the info.

I had no idea there was so much vibrato in his singing. In fact, slowed down, it' pretty sour.

I gotta say.. Im underwhelmed. Never heard the song before today and considering the amount of pro musicians and singers they threw at this I expected better.
Thumbs up for the vid anyway Fil👍

I have a girlfriend she's totally into Opera. She goes to New York every year and stays a month and takes in shows. She buys the tickets that include backstage and meet the artist. Admission plus one package.
You get to bring somebody with you backstage. Opera freaks are special kinds of freaks. She's got a picture of her with Pavarotti. Oh my my.

A friend of mine at University was an Opera singer and even placed at the Met competion. He was a great guy, doing musical theater now. He used to sing the National Anthem at the Football and Basketball games, and worked at a sandwich shop in town. His nickname was "My Hero". BTW he was the one that encouraged me to try to take courses to have a stage voice.

Even though opera is not my thing, I was invited ( forced) to go see the Three Tenors at Skydome in Toronto back in the mid 90's and even though this is a 50,000 seat stadium which is normally not the best for acoustics and I didn't know one word or one song, I was blown away by the power and control in their voices. It is always good to experience new music of any type, even if done reluctantly

@@HamiltonRb What opened up Opera for me was when they started providing the translation from Italian to English. You could listen and even if you didn't speak Italian, you could enjoy the drama. Now I know what the Opera is about, before I was just enjoying the magnificence of the human voice, the music, the costumes, and the staging.
And a brandy at halftime- intermission?..... "interval."

Starting in 1992, LC collaborated with many big names in the pop/rock genres to make 10 cds for charities that provided aid to children in war torn countries. I'm sure many of the artists donated their time, but maybe JB was offered some compensation. LC's expression is priceless in the video with joe cocker.
