Dave E Mac performed his song "Baby Don't Get Hooked On Me" on the Helen Ready show back in the seventies. After the show, back stage there was a group of angry women from the Women's Lib movement who approached Mac and asked him, "How could you go on Helen Reddy's show and perform such a male chauvinist song like that"? Mac replied, "Well ladies, if I can be so presumptuous, she asked me to".

Mac had a great variety TV show in the 70s. At some point during every show, he would sit on stage with his guitar, and audience members would yell out song ideas, and he'd noodle around for a minute, and then come up with about a15-second song. He had a real comic gift, too, so the songs were usually pretty humorous. Unlike a lot of songwriters, he also had a great singing voice. Top picker, top songwriter, top talent. I've always loved Mac. Thanks for the analysis!

RIP Mac Davis . I found out about MD today. Nice voice .
    Beautiful Job.Thank You .
Another beautiful reminder that we can still help others in need, a smile , a random act of kindness is something I do every Christmas. I choose a family who have little. I pack up a box and fill stockings and drop off supplies for a Christmas dinner. We take so many many things for granted. It makes us better people, and it changes lives . I run to my car afterwards,so I don’t know them ,but it’s my little way of helping my community,or if I hear of a family in need . This song was very touching.

Your description of Mac Davis as "songwriting extraordinaire" is definitely spot-on. Mac had me fully engaged in his performance of his compositon via his musicianship and storytelling. I enjoyed your analysis of his performance--as always, you have me thinking musically. Your mention of how the best songwriters utilized relevent lyrical content affirmed that talent mattered. From your analysis videos, you both teach and remind me musically. I truly appreciate what you do, Fil.

Fil, you didn't mention that Mac was in the movie North Dallas Forty. I mention this because of an interview he did on Johnny Carson talking about the "wrap party" after the movie finished filming.
Mac was talking to the film's director when John Matusczak walked over (John was HUGE-6'8" and extremely muscular). First John said:"I like your shirt" to which Mac gave a quick thanks, then tried to resume the conversation with the director. John then put his hand on Mac's head and said:"I like your hair." Mac then told Johnny Carson that he was beginning to fear for his safety. John then laughed and walked away. He had rattled Mac, which was the whole point.

Mac came from the hot bed of country rock music of Lubbock, Texas.

In the U.S. he had a weekly show in mid-late 70's (maybe early 80's), during the show he would take 2,3, or 4 suggestions for topics from the audience then make a song on the spot from the ideas given. He made it work every time.

Wow Fil, I just went to see the movie Elvis, and knowing that Mac Davis wrote the tune, In the Ghetto, decided to check out what had happened to him. It was from there that I found out he had passed away over a year ago, and also found this great tribute to his songwriting greatness. I am old enough to remember his old TV show from the late 70's, and I remember a segment he used to do where the audience would give him a song title and he would write a song on the spot based on that title. He truly was one of our great songwriters, and I thank you for highlighting his immense talent.

Another outstanding job Fil. I was most certainly around when Elvis did this song but I'm one that usually just listens to the music more than I listen to the words and as Mac did this song here this is the first time I really heard all the words to this song because being it was Mac just with his guitar and was very easy to hear all the words to the song and I have to say that this song is so relevant today that I think it should be rereleased its like Mac had a crystal ball when he penned this song. I was never a real big Mac Davis fan because I was more into Rock but I never realized that Mac wrote all these songs and I'm really truly impressed by his accomplishments God rest your soul Mac.

Thanks Fil. There's more to Mac Davis than I realized. I remember his variety show here in the US when I was a kid. I never knew what a good songwriter he was! Thanks also for the guitar demonstration of 'In The Ghetto' This is definitely a guitar friendly channel👍
Now we have lost Eddie Van Halen.😢

I remember watching the Mac Davis show as a kid with him making up a song from something an audience member shouted out to him , only a couple of times did i see him get stumped but only got a couple of seconds and then he would come up with a song, maybe not the best even to his own admission but he came up with something. Miss ya Mac. ✌

Thank you for a lovely tribute to Mac. I'd love to hear an analysis of a Bobby Vinton performance sometime. He played many instruments and was a terrific artist. Thanks again.

Greetings, Matt Davis was some one who's music I grew up on and watched his show as well, my favorite through the years was Baby Don't Get Hooked On Me, and actually got to watch him sing that song on his show. He was so gifted. Thanks Fil, just love your platform. 😉 Cheers, Marty Kozee Masden

Rip Mac Davis. Sorry to hear he has passed. Super good analysis.👏 I think you are a blessing Fil to us❤. Your a "Rock" musician but you love & appreciate different genres of music. That's probably why your analysis are top notch. You are "world class" Fil and such a good hearted person with loads of talent who is talking and teaching us all with a million dollar smile.❤ Have a great day.😊
