Slight delay by me due to being a bit ill BUT what do you think of these latest Criterion announcements? Any films here you want to add to your collection?
Thank you Elliot. I have never seen Performance and since I loved Don’t Look Now which I got based on your review and discussion, I am going to give it a look. Thanks as always!
To be fair, the criterion blu-ray of Punch Drunk Love still looks near 4K standard already blew me away watching it through my OLED.. Though I imagine with HDR it would look fantastic.
brought two releases from my local HMV during the current sale, Bottle Rocket and Risky Business, the latter is definitely an improvement on the previous Warner Bros. bluray especially in the audio, just wished the "sale" included all Criterion UK releases and not just a select few, these special editions are expensive in the UK and not often on sale.
Hi Elliot - Drugstore Cowboy is not a feel-good movie, but its dark humour and sharp storytelling make it compelling. If you like films that mix grit with intelligence (Boogie Nights or Seconds come to mind), this could be right up your alley.
Im happy with many of the titles coming to criterion or getting upgraded to 4K in February, especially Crossing Delancey. Mainly because I loved Chilly Scenes of Winter so much. It was one of my favorite purchases of 2023.
The Mother and the Whore is an event and thank God Criterion aren't delaying the U.K release. Performance is a masterpiece too. But until The Devils is ever released, it's is the only film people really want from Criterion and, yes, I'm well aware of its history on home media. Drugstore Cowboy is great too. I have a Spanish blu of it from DVD Spain. Saw it when it opened in 1990- still holds up. King Lear was a Cannon Film/MGM starring Molly Ringwald. The contract for the film was made on the back of a napkin in a hotel at the Cannes Film Festival between Godard and the heads of Cannon, Golan and Globus back in 1984/5
I wish they’d do a different PT Anderson movie like Magnolia, Boogie Nights or There Will Be Blood. Those are my favorites of his. I am underwhelmed by these announcements as a whole.
I wasn't a huge fan of Crossing Delancey but I've watched three Joan Micklin Silver films this year and loved them all, so I'm hoping with this announcement and previously Chilly Scenes of Winter being released, others will be coming into the collection. The three films I watched were The Fish In The Bathtub, Between The Lines, and Hester Street! Perhaps I'll like/appreciate Crossing Delancey more on a rewatch now that I'm a bit more familiar with her work.
I'm curious to see which of these titles will be announced for Criterion UK this month. I watched Drugstore Cowboy for the first time this year and thoroughly enjoyed it. It's definitely an instant buy
Not familiar with these films and not really the sort of fare I go for, but I can't complain too much when I'm getting such a treat in December with No Country for Old Men and Paris, Texas in 4K and then Seven Samurai and Godzilla in 4K this month. I have been wanting to see Cronos at some point, though.
From what I have seen Drugstore Cowboy have only been released on blu-ray in Australia from Imprint and I was sad for missing out on their limited edition of the film, but now I'm hyped for the Criterion 4k! I already have the Cronos blu-ray from Criterion so will most probably get the BFI 4k.
Picked up Yi Yi, Stalker and Midnight Cowboy in the 40% off sale - feels beautiful getting a criterion for just over £10.00! Tempted by performance and Drugstore Cowboy on 4k but not sure as the import cost for 4k is a bit hefty - and punch drunk is great but I personally feel quite satisfied with my current criterion Blu Ray
Makes me hesitate on getting the latest Columbia classic set. Since age of innocence and on the waterfront both might get a standalone release. If the set drops more in price then I’ll get
I do agree with you on February releases I have that Punch Drunk Love 4k you refer to, I do like the sound of the Godard film but its only a bluray and Performance sounds good, i do.like Gus Van Sant i would like to see Elephant come to Criterion more though, Drugstore Cowboy was an Imprint release.
Australia's Imprint label released a Blu-ray of Drugstore Cowboy in 2021. It's been a couple of yerars now, but I recall it looking much better than my ancient dvd. It's meant to have a grainy look too it, so you don't want it too clean. I'll wait for the reviews before I decide; the extras don't look too different, so I may give the new version a shot. I am really looking forward to Performance. I watched it for the first time in 2020 and loved it. The extras look far more extensive than on the Warner's archive. I love Punch Drunk Love, but it gets expensive upgrading, so I'll pass. I did enjoy Crossing Delancy when I saw it upon release and I may get it because I am a big fan of Joan Micklin Silver's earlier films, especially Hester Street.
Would rather Roeg's Bad Timing got a release, the film hasn't ever had a BluRay release in the US & the UK BluRay, which I have, that was put out by Network, is subpar & also out-of-print. Can't complain about Performance mind, Roeg is my favourite filmmaker after all. Crossing Delancey is a great surprise though. Your typical 'girl wants the charismatic handsome womaniser over the dependable, kind but rather unexciting & average looking other guy' bittersweet romance. It's well written though & 80's NYC plays as great backdrop, the city is practically a character in itself.
Not interested in any of the movies announced this month. Criterion has been trending in a direction that I don’t really like, but it’s okay because others seem to really enjoy it and there are some great other boutique labels releasing things I like (Radiance, Deaf Crocodile, and Second Run especially).
That's what I like about the market currently. If one label isn't doing it for you, there's a bunch of other labels doing different and interesting things. I love those 3 labels you mention!
Not really impressed with releases we have seen previously. What about films like Welles' Journey into Fear? Ossessione? A Peter Greenaway box set? The collected works of Shirley Clarke? I am sure there are all kinds of rights issues, but it seems to me the same films are being released over and over with fewer and fewer original releases.
I'm no longer interested in Criterion. They have the best catalogue, yes, but also the poorest packaging of all the boutique labels. And whereas they once could boast about their special features, they've long since been outdone by their competitors. Not to mention that their transfers are no longer up to scratch. I wouldn't mind having a 4K version of Performance, but not from Criterion...
"The mother and the whore' is an event, as it was said. But nothing very appealing in february. I'm waiting for Magnolia and There will be blood 4k. Punch drunk love blu ray is enough for me.
*** SPOILERS *** I watched all of them in a row after the announcement and I was underwhelmed as well. The only one I’m getting is: _Punch-Drunk Love_ (2002) because I related to it as someone on the spectrum. _Drugstore Cowboy_ (1989) was good all-around, I love Gus Van Sant, but I’m not enticed to see it again. _Performance_ (1970) was a little too disorienting for me to stay fully engaged and I don’t think Mick Jagger is the best actor. _King Lear_ (1987) is probably Jean-Luc Godard’s worst film as I found it pretentious and absurdly dull. _Crossing Delancey_ (1988) was an okay romantic comedy, though I’m biased towards rom coms. _Cronos_ (1993) was engaging at first, despite the low budget and terrible acting, but it lost all that potential with a reductive second half.
For me, these releases for 2025 have been incredibly incredibly dull. I don’t care for a single release announced from Criterion for 2025. I say this, as I loved their 2024 lineup and wanted so many new titles that I didn’t have cash to buy from my backlog list of older titles.

Im so excited for Performance Not a Lot of people Talk about that Film and I Like That its getting the Hype it deserves

I love «Drugstore Cowboy». my favorite Gus Van Sant. So excited since I have not seen it in over 25 years.
It’s the only one I’m excited for.

@@benvanasse3397 thanks, Ben - I’m looking forward to watching it when it releases! Cheers
I’m cool with performance. Just a few wish list 4K titles for me: Pink Floyd the Wall, Barfly, Rock & Rule, Armageddon, King Kong (1933)
Im happy with many of the titles coming to criterion or getting upgraded to 4K in February, especially Crossing Delancey. Mainly because I loved Chilly Scenes of Winter so much. It was one of my favorite purchases of 2023.

@@ElliotCoenme too!
Happy with Performance getting a 4k. Now we (I) need Bad Timing, Castaway, and The Witches.
We need Insignificance more than any of those.
@SpaceCattttt I'm happy with the Criterion blu ray release.
King Lear by Godard is a revelation. Thanks.

oh man I just finally upgraded my Punch Drunk Love DVD to the Criterion Blu-ray...
The blu-ray still looks great, so don't worry too much about needing to upgrade again soon.
Crossing Delancey might be good. I'll check it out

Eyes wide shut, Magnolia, the game on 4K uhd would be amazing from criterion.
Yes, yes they are
Im excited for Cronos!
It's a wonderful film from del Toro!
Just had eyeball 4k special edition collector's set with limited edition artwork new on 88 films 🎥 😊
@@garyturley2435 Nice, i’m hoping to get it soon!
I@@ElliotCoen its out Monday with mortuary which came today as well I order direct off 88 films and they send them out early

Performance 🤌
the crying game is also getting an Australian blu ray release early next year might get a few of these movies early next year in 4K by uk criterion
Very intrigued by Performance, which I hadn’t heard of before the announcement-might be a blind buy for me!
It's weird but the good kind of late 1960s weird!

Short answer...EH? Still hyped to cop No Country for Old Men, Wages of Fear, and Seven Samurai but damnit where the hell is THIEF from Michael Mann? 😂
Yes I'd love Thief to get a 4K upgrade. Brilliant film!

@ElliotCoen It's in my top three of Roeg's after Don't Look Now & Walkabout. It's fantastic.
Bad Timing is one of the best Films I've ever seen and it surely needs a Blu-ray asap. I'm surprised Criterion has not done one by now.
