Bang & Olufsen MX7000 CRT TV and User Guide

  • Ultimate retro gaming CRT - user guide included below
    The Beovision range of 4:3 standard definition CRT TVs are in my opinion some of the very best for retro gaming as I will explain in this video. The one featured is the 26.5 inch MX7000, featuring 2 x RGB Scart inputs, active stereo sound, great picture quality, de-interlacing function, full service menu adjustments and of course the iconic Danish design. Many believe these to be the most stylish CRTs ever made.
    To enter service mode press MENU, 1, 1, GO. For anyone trying to get the service menu on an MX4200 the code is MENU, 0, 0, GO (not 1,1 as used on other sets). Press the right arrow on your BEO4 to scroll through the following. Use the up and down arrows to change a value.
    Hfq - Horizontal frequency, Vertical hold. Adjust to avoid picture rolling.
    Hph - Horizontal phase, Horizontal position. Higher values move image to the right.
    Ham - Horizontal amplitude, Lower values increase horizontal size
    Vam - Vertical amplitude, Higher values increase vertical size.
    Vsc - Vertical s-correction, expands centre and compresses top and bottom
    Vsh - Vertical shift, Higher values move the image towards bottom of screen.
    Vli - Vertical linearity, compresses top, expands bottom. lower numbers squash the upper half height of the screen
    EWc - East/West corner, shifts the top and bottom horizontally to expand corners. Higher numbers flare the top and bottom L/R corners outwards, lower numbers form a bulge in the middle of L/R sides
    EWp - East/West parabola. To make vertical lines at sides of screen parallel with sides of screen
    EWt - East/West tilt, trapezoid correction. Tilt the picture. Higher numbers tilt the picture clockwise.
    Here are some useful "default" settings from my own MX7000, which you could try using particularly if you get into trouble. As all sets are different, you will need to customise your own settings for the best picture.
    Hfq 26, Hph 55, Ham 22, Vam 30, Vsc 31, Vsh 20, Vli 20, EWc 16, EWp 20, EWt 48
    You can only access service mode from the TV input (snow screen if you do not have an analogue RF signal on this channel). The inability to view the picture (on AV input channels) whilst altering geometry is annoying but not a game stopper.
    You may only be able to access Service Mode with a Jumper Mod for B&O MX models with chassis revisions earlier than 3.1 as well as any MX series TV where you do not have a beo4 remote or beo4 copy. You will need to build a bridge across the jumper on the AV board. The jumper is located right above the inputs on the AV board. It's the first thing you'll see and it's clearly marked.
    Chassis revision model is shown on the sticker on the rear of the TV. Look for SW 3.1 or similar version number, on the top right of the sticker. Any chassis with revision number 3.1 or later should have the preferred functionality and picture quality.
    One of the most unique feature in this range of CRT TVs is their ability to take an interlaced signal (480i for example) which will typically look flickery and without clarity of scanlines, and to process this to simulate a 240p signal. Please see my other video on de-interlacing.

    WARNING: These TVs are getting on 20 years old so be prepared that one might have or develop a fault.
    Common problem: Standby light shows as red but the TV won't turn on (degausse). The faults are normally located on the main PSU board. You will need an expert to take the set apart and replace capacitors. Normally these faults can be rectified with fairly simple capacitor replacement so don't throw the TV out without finding out if you have any local TV repair shops.
    The following guides are from the B&O archives. Even if you can't fix the fault yourself, this guide will help the TV repair people know where to look (if they don't already).

    To be able to adjust the screen in AV, do the following:
    - Hook up a device to Scart port 2.
    - Go to tv mode and enter the menu from there (the regular one, not the service menu).
    - Go to the "Sockets" section, and set AV2 as "Decoder".
    - Also set Decoder option to "yes" or "on" (whatever it is).
    Now the device you have hooked up will show its picture in tv mode. You can go to the service menu and make your adjustments.

      Do that work with a MX7000 v 2.0 as well? I'm asking because when I hook up a device to Scart port 2 and set AV2 as "Decoder" I got no picture at all...
      And that feature you are talking about at 06:46, it doesn't happened anything when I try it as you explain. Do I have to have a MX7000 version earlier than 2.0?

      Does this work for the MX3500? On mine, the only RGB-capable port is AV1, but i'm not able to adjust anything but the brightness ("brilliance") and contrast, but the colors look very washed out. Should I still plug something in scart port 2 and adjust it from there?

    I just scored myself an ME 6000. = Winning. My ideal goal is an RGB/SCART switch and all my consoles tapped into that. Reason being is that SCART is versatile for composite video, s-video, and component video capabilities if I really need to use them (with adapters or special cables). Saves me changing channels all the time and remembering what's plugged in where, keeps it very simple and organised.

    well there's a couple of things that will be difficult, namely selecting V-AUX with the list function for your AV-2 input, or getting SHIFT up if you want to de-interlace. Both rely on you seeing what option is displayed on your remote before hitting GO. Other than that, you can select AV-1, access menus and service menu settings without needing to see the LCD screen.

    OK, we can get that sorted I'm sure. Can you get the TV into TV mode and press MENU, 1, 1, GO, and does that bring up the serial number etc>? If so, you are there. If not, I don't know why: the MX7000 was released over a few years and I'm sure all models could enter service mode via the remote. There are also two pin terminals on the back panel, if you temporarily connect them via a wire (low voltage, don't worry!) it will automatically go into service mode, and you can make the adjustment.

  • @futurematt5
    @futurematt5  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks mate! The MX4000 is the slimmer of the two, and probably a lot more sensible for a multi system game room but the massive screen on the 7000 is pretty cool.

    V-AUX is the name of the "device" which you need to select for the AV-1 RGB socket, I also sent another reply below. For Saturn you won't need the de-interlace function so I don't think you will suffer much. Very few of these TVs come with Beo4 working remote anyway so if you think you are getting a good deal, go for it and good luck.

    awesome that you like the picture and sound. Yes, it really is a first rate CRT!! The menu settings are all stored in flash automatically so it remembers most settings ie contrast etc, but when you actually go into the menu, it displays in non-RGB mode which increases the brightness of the image while you are adjusting it. A bit annoying but not a showstopper.

    • @Brugzeikers
      @Brugzeikers 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, on my MX7000 the image in non-RGB (menu) mode actually seems to be better. White is more white, the image when not in the menu's is quite blueish when compared to the image while i'm in the menu's. Could my tv be faulty?

  • @futurematt5
    @futurematt5  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    you will be able to set up the input as mentioned in this video, but actually selecting V-AUX requires use of the LIST function on the remote, as V-AUX is not on the keys (ask the seller, it may be a different version, there were several). V-TAPE is on there for AV-1. However, every BEO4 remote will have V-AUX on its LIST, so in theory you could use trial and error, by pressing LIST, GO, LIST, GO, LIST, GO but in the meantime it will select some other crap, not going to mess the thing up though.

  • @futurematt5
    @futurematt5  12 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    hey, I've not used an Avant; sure they were the highest spec CRTs that B&O produced, they could output 480p through component, and I think they had 100hz refresh rate, but the screen is 16:9 which is never perfect for old school 4:3 games, and they got pretty big and cumbersome at that size (28" I believe). The MX range is a design classic, and the screen, while not quite as sharp as the Sony's of the time, still does an amazing job. As a package the MX is better IMO.

    yeah you really need the original beo4 remote to work properly, and unless you're lucky and find a cheap auction with both, you might pay over the odds for separates. The thing with the de-interlace function is that CRTs display 570 odd lines of image but in two sweeps, so there's always a flickering which on the B&O looks a bit rubbish.

    No, the 3000 I cannot vouch for on any account, you would have to research that. I reckon the MX4000 is the prerfect allrounder but if you're after info on other TVs you'll need to ask around as I don't have much experience other than the odd Trinitron.

    Hi . I got an MX7000 as a birthday present , and I love it . I just have a few difficulties with it . I can't find the " SOUND " cue to add to the list when accessing " ADD ? " , and , because of that , I can only play in Mono . I also read from someone that they can access " SOUND " , but mono remains mono ( I also tried tuning it , but , it doesn't change it ) . My other issue is that when I plug in my ps2 through scart , the image is less bright than my android tv box for example , which I have hooked up through a converter to SCART .

    Just over a tenner is still a real bargain! If you can get one for under £50 with the remote, in my bag that's still Snoopy Tennis! Well, I suppose if you add travelling / shipping it's more Parachute. If you go for the MX7000 the result will be totally Donkey Kong!! Apologies for the irrelevent game and watch analogies. Good luck hunting one down!

    I don't doubt that is a very smart bit of cathode ray wonderfullness! The Marty 2 is the smartist bit of dark grey plastic console known to man. How I covet one. Was that guy really a diehard gamefan if he sold a diehard system like the Marty?! Maybe he owned two. Mind you gamers sometimes need the cash for their latest collection craze. Don't think I would part with any of my classic consoles though. Thanks for watchin'!

    Do the 100Hz refreshment create ghosting? I remember my late 90s/early 00s high-range Widescreen Sony Trinitron (or was it Wega) was 100Hz and had a LOT of ghosting. Maybe the B&O can manually disabling.

      MX7000 isn't a 100Hz TV.

    Hi, since a week i have this television. When i play Gamecube and N64 trough the standard rgb cable the screen is slightly moved to the right (black border on the left side of the screen). But with my dreamcast I get a lot of overscan on the left side. (black border on the right side) I have fiddled with the service menu options. But i never can get the screen the right size for all my consoles. When i adjust the screen for the DC, so that it fits the screen. The image on the gamecube and N64 after this setting is shifted more to the right side. Is it because i use a Dreamcast RGB scartlead? Do you also have this problem with your consoles?

      I am working on this since I got the TV 3 months ago.... So far, I made settings for 8 consoles, wrote them down and switch constantly, which is not the best solution! But now it got even worse: I have to fiddle with some games specifically, allthough onthe same console! Meaning, there are some PSX title, that have overscan issues allthough the general settings are fine for my PSX.... I am at the point of giving up and opting for a Sony Trinitron.... This really is a bummer and allthough some years old: have you guys found a solution yet???

    Thanks, all my 60hz consoles work fine. I also believe that withe correct leads an NTSC console will display in color. But I don't know any more than that, and can only vouch for it displaying a Saturn, JP and Japanese PS2.

    You really want the MX4000, 4002 or higher models. I don't think the smaller models have 2 RGB inputs, or take NTSC even. They probably don't have great screens either.

    Looks like I'm going to have to. Would love to add a B&O or even a Loewe but now I have everything outputting through D-Sub15 I'm most likely going to stick with another PC CRT monitor for convenience as much as anything, unless I can find a Hanatarex display. A housed vga ready arcade monitor. Yeah ya do!

    I saw one for £40 and you can get replacement remotes, but only through specific B&O linked German companies it seems (not your usual "all round" remotes are they?!?). Sale fell through anyway though so I'm a Sony Trinitron boy, but happy with that! Its interesting the Beovision can have the option of *not* showing scanlines - I thought that was just a feautre of CRTs? Or is this because its a bit funky and futuristic (for its time)? Anyway, cool you got the bigger brother version as well..

    I hope to fix my Bang & Olufsen BeoCenter AV5. The problem is that the tv has a "pincushion" problem (sorry for my english), and some technicians have told me that it will be expensive to fix it, and other technicians said me that it can't fix. I've never opened a crt television, I get a little scared.

    I have good news on a remote as i have a Beo4 on the way! I would have picked up the television that came with it but it was situated 160 miles away so i had to leave it which was a shame as it was a MX6000 :)

    And people are just throwing these things out not knowing their value. I hate to break it to you but Arcade monitors had scanlines, i had a Nanao it had scanlines like many CRT TV's, it was exactly like my CRT TV in my video, except less clear, the games looked good on it but it was really difficult to browse with, your one is great for really old games like pacman, i don't think Arcade monitors that far back had scanlines.

    Dear futurematt, I already own 4 different CRT models, including one 50hz / 50 cm Thomson that is nice and went after cheap 100hz/72cm and 82 cm Sony's. I can see some defaults but it is still a great experience. Sound is a blast as well as colors on the Sonys. Do you think this B&O would be a superior investment ? I'm not a scanline guy, I'd just be sure that I have the best CRT for playing my old systems from Snes to Gamecube & PS2. And I hear a 50hz Sony would be better than 100hz? TY!
