    Just bought a 66 GMC with that engine and it is awesome...I have no complaints!

    I'm sick and tired of hearing that crap too!! Those are great old engines!! Tough! If you run a 3:08 rear axle it will get decent gas mileage!! And tons of torque!! I have a 66 GMC stepside identical to yours,,, unfortunately i messed up my 305c by flushing it out,, and stopping up the oil pump screen thus spinning a rod bearing!!! But i know where another engine is and I'm probably going back with it!! I loved that old engine!!

    Just started working on a 1962 GMC 1000 flairside with the 305 V6 that I bought in July.
    I haven't gotten it running yet. It turns over but the distributor was missing the negative wire that connects to the coil. Ordered a electronic ignition, hope to have it running soon. It was sitting for a few years before I bought it.

    worked for a freight company that could not get enough of these v6 motors. they ran them on big straight trucks as well. they always got 300 k plus miles on them. my dad had one with the 305 E the small motor and we put a camper on it and pulled a boat with it. they made a 355 magnum and a 401magnum that were popular, this engine was the base for the 12 cyl motor put in busses an large trucks, bullet proof. block was nickel not cast iron. seemed to eat gas at 10 mpg and fuel pumps but those are the only down sides. torque monsters.

    The reason I like these engines is because, with a 305 the truck could tow a pickup to the top of Dugan's mountain in 4th gear.
    Later Dugan swapped in a 350, and he could not do any better than 2nd gear towing a car up the mountain.

    I have a Stromberg on my 305 e as well but I've had nothing but problems with it leaking in and now it's running too fast I'm about ready to put something else on there you have any of these problems?

      A lot of weight for a vehicle so small, may rip your frame apart, but it will be a powerhouse.

      These sbc 350 people are suffering from what I call a Major national obsession , they have to have a sbc in just about anything they drive. There is life beyond Chevrolet. Nothing wrong with those big GMC V6 engines!!

      I've heard some neat stories on hopping these up. Not much in the way of custom stuff. Best and most common thing so far is dual exhaust and a 500 cfm 2 barrel and HEI swap. Helps a lot with power and torque throughout the curve. Stock is 160 hp and 270 torque. With the swap you'll probably see around 185 hp and 285-295 torque. More compression and more cam lift makes the real difference on these.

      Drain all oil out of crank case first...

      Actually the pressure is not that much at idle, If you rev it up oil is going to fly..........
