- This is an excerpt from Norman Finkelstein’s address to the UCD Philosophy Society, University College Dublin, on the current state of the occupied territories.
In his address, Dr Finklestein discusses the recent conflicts in the occupied territories which followed the kidnapping and killing of three Israeli youths and a Palestinian teen; Israel's anti-missile defence system, the Iron Dome; Isreal’s Operation Protective Edge; and possible ways to resolve the conflict.
Finkelstein, a political scientist, has written extensively on the political, social and historical state of Israel and the occupied territories. He famously and successfully dismantled and deconstructed 'From Time Immemorial' by Joan Peters which, at the time, was considered a foundational and invaluable text on the Palestine - Israel Conflict.
Finkelstein received his doctorate in 1988 from the Department of Politics at Princeton University. He currently teaches at Sakarya University’s Center for Middle Eastern Studies in Turkey. He is the author of ten books that have been translated into 50 foreign editions. The title of his latest book is Method and Madness: The hidden story of Israel’s assaults on Gaza.

The comments are so weird. BDS is not a radical group. It’s a consumer based solution, what could be more milk toast and liberal? How could finkelstein’s issues with them be a symptom of centrism or moderate-ness?
Which consumer can impose 'sanctions' on a state?

@@BlackLabelSlushie I don't think he's changed at all. Notice how he specifically says how BDS is behaving NOW. His positions is that BDS is not nearly enough and people should not presume that BDS is the end all be all to Palestinian liberation.

refugees status is not a title to be passed from generation to generation. once we apply the same definition to all the people claiming to be a refugee, we can agree on the return conformations.
1948 the arabs kicked all jews out of their lands and stole their property, about 600,000 jews. There are no Jewish refugees. Meanwhile not 1 arab state takes in any palestinian refugees except the country they are supposed to rule, Jordan, which anyways is historically Israel. BDS is just a hate movement to destroy Israel, it has nothing to do with peace or helping refugees or the poor. The PLO leaders get rich off the war and pocket billions from UNRWA while arabs suffer under Hamas and tribalism. In short, when the arab nations have an ounce of respect for their own people and stop perpetuating war, there will be peace. So long as people call to destroy Israel, which is exactly what BDS calls for, there will be war.

This is nonsense. There isn't even a P sound in Arabic. The word Palestinian comes from the Hebrew, not Arabic and from the Torah no less. Find me one source otherwise! The root of Palestinian in Hebrew is Polesh, 'Invader'.الغازي in Arabic, and they were from Greece millenia before Mohammad.
The contested region, from Gaza to the East bank of Jordan, was Judea and renamed Palestine by Roman emperor Hadrian after Tiberius destroyed and scattered the Jews from Judea. Jesus was a Jewish rabbi around that time, and his disciple 'Judas' is a testament to Judea, a common name in Judaism. Josephus Flavius wrote about it. Augustine wrote about it. All of history and genetic testing attests to the fact that Jews are from Judea, and that modern Jews are from historic Semetic people. Even the Koran attests that Israel is the people of the bible. So the 'Ashkenazi' story does not hold up not even a little. Ashkenazi Jews were exiled to Italy, then moved north to the German region, before being dispersed to Russia/Poland and Eastern Europe. Regardless, there were 600,000 Sephardic Jews who were in Morocco, Iraq, Algeria, Yemen - throughout the middle east and northern Africa. There are Ethiopian Jews and other African Jews. The narrative is bubkis.

I would guess that he is sorry for his view on BDS back then. He should have realized that it's the only way for change. That the world would see israel as an aparteid state, and isolate it culturally. And then slowly would come change as in S A. (not that israel would suffer do much economically, because of US and western support)

Israel is not facing any sanctions unlike Iran which is imposed financial and other sanctions by U.S.A. Israel receives a lot of money from U.S government each year.
Iran brought those sanctions on herself by constantly threatenning very powerfull countries with violence and terror , and by destabilising the entire middle east because of its own grandeur delusions. Iran will be tought a lesson.
