  • The results of misdirection and subversion are surprises and twists. In this video, we'll look at a few examples and techniques to achieve this. You'll learn how misdirection leads to mystery, and which genres often use this tool.
Misdirection can be used by the screenwriter, but it can also be part of the story itself, as you will see in our example from HEAT.
Watching these videos may be fun, and it will give you some insights. However, it is no substitute for actual writing.
If you're interested in learning the actual craft of screenwriting, consider the course I designed after working in the industry for 30 years. This is an online, self-guided course that helps you navigate the best screenplays in some of the top genres. You will not just read the scripts, but properly PROCESS them, and actually learn the craft as you work through the course.

    Thank you for considering this.

Excellent video ... One of my personal favorite examples of misdirection is the Lost season 3 finale.
For 3 seasons, every episode has contained a flashback to a characters past.
In season 3, Jacks flashbacks at the beginning and middle show him at his worst.
Then, in the 2 episode finale, we watch him finally lead his group towards rescue in the present even though hes been warned not to do so, meanwhile we follow a tormented, suicidal bearded Jack in the flashback who is burdened by someones death.
Just as Jack makes contact with his would be rescuers on the frieghter in a thrilling high, we find flashback Jack outside a landing strip as a car pulls up.
To our surprise ... its Kate.
And in that moment we discover ... this wasnt a flashback .... this was a flash forward ... and we are left in shock by the ultimate clifhanger as Jack pleads "We have to go back Kate. WE HAVE TO GO BACK!!"
    Brilliant.

Yes, fantastic twist, playing with our assumptions about time. Similar to the one in ARRIVAL, and the end of THE PLANET OF THE APES. Thanks, Eric!
      Cheers,
