very clever sealing the roof like that! i just began my own pallet building journey making an $80 greenhouse for my lady. it is surprising what a dirtbag can accompish with a few pallets and minimal fucks. this is quite inspirational and i am looking forward to seeing more.
Thank you and I’m glad you’re here!! I love hearing what scrappy stuff folks are building. I used to give many fucks. I now give less and life is much better lol
do you draw up plans before you start building and on what? Also, for the cabin do you use anything to insulate the walls? I'm wondering how recycled plastic or cardboard would work for insulation.
Sometimes I do yeah, if it’s a structure I always do a little preplanning, just to get my basic dimensions down. But then I just go for it and adapt as things inevitably change hah. I usually just use paper/pencil or my iPad. Re:insulation, ya I’m wanting to try cardboard in the cabin as well. I’ve used it before and it works okay. But this time I’m looking to shred it and do a loose fill somehow.
Any worry about the pallets leaching chemicals/vapors into the sauna? I know heat treated pallets would be less likely to have any residues but there’s no knowing what warehouse floors they’ve been sitting on or what they’ve been exposed to
Ya it’s a fair concern. Firstly I’ll be using cedar for the interior, so the heat won’t be exposed directly to pallet wood. Secondly I’ll burn it pretty hot for the first few days as a test run to see how it smells and feels inside. If it all feels good, I’ll give it a go after that :)
FWIW pallets are almost never treated wood, because capitalism. Pallets wear out faster than they would succumb to rot or termites, so they don't spend the extra to use treated.

Watching with interest - what will you use for the heat source?
I’ll be building a barrel stove and seating it in a clay rock situation :)
Hoping to copy what you do - I’m also broke with expensive tastes 🤣

How do you plan to isolate it?
Torn between wood chips or nothing…
Do you do anything to prepare the wood like planing or joining? Or just put it together as is ?
Currently just slapping it together as is! I’m interested in exploring some planing to make t&g in the future tho
If i fake my death would you let me live off grid close to your land?
Most likely yes. We’d have to ask my landlord or hide you really well
@jacobcochrane don't worry, my cat noise are on point
💪💪💪

He can just keep it hot a couple of days until all the residues are out

That’s what I’m thinking too
