These suspension seatposts do absorb some road noise and jolts from rough pavement but they are not really great for longer rides. Because they only move up and down in a vertical plane, they alter the distance between the saddle and the cranks as they move (as if you are constantly raising and lowering your seat). This is not good for an efficient pedal stroke and can cause knee pain and injury. A much better design is the parallelogram, which has 4 pivots that allow the seat to move in an arc (down and back). The distance from the seat to the pedals remains constant so there is no strain on the knees. If you tried the two styles side by side you would immediately notice the difference. While there are none as cheap as $30, you can get a very good one for about $70. Its a one time investment and priceless when you consider how much healthier it is for your knees and how much more efficient your pedal stroke is.
@@RobMacKendrick here is a link to one I put on my gravel bike. It works great and is even less than $70 on Amazon. Just pay attention to rider weight limit and make sure you get one with the correct spring size for your weight. Additional springs are available but its less hassle to get the one with the correct spring to begin with. I'm only 130 lbs so I got the 70kg spring and have it set at the lightest setting and have still never bottomed out. These are not the lightest but unless you are a weight weenie it really doesn't make a difference. They are well made from quality parts. Good luck and let me know if you get it and how it works out for you.
@@RobMacKendrick Search for Venzo Suspension Seatpost. Its about $55 on Amazon with free shipping I believe. As I said, I have this on my gravel bike and use in on pretty rough terrain. It smooths out even the roughest sections of trail and allows you to remain seated and pedal through the rough stuff that you would normally need to stand up for. This saves your energy and keeps you fresh while improving traction. On paved roads and light trails it will feel like you are riding on air. Cane Creek makes one very similar but the cost is 4x higher and the quality it not any better.
Thanks for the link! After our 30 mile bike ride yesterday, I just order 2 of these posts for my wife and I. Should make the upcoming rides more pleasant!
My Himiway's haven't arrived yet and I was planning on that suntour. "budget" is relative so I'm trying this DJC first on mine and if it's not that great get the suntour for my wife. I feel like I saved a lot by buying Himiway so I've got more for the "budget". However things are adding up with new bike rack, locks, trunk bags, Cloud 9 seats, cell phone holders etc
I ordered one and it's on a FedX truck to be delivered today. I have a 2019 Rad Rover, and I usually keep the seat all the way down so I can throw my leg over it and my feet hit the ground when sitting. I think this seat post is going to be about 2" higher, so I've been riding with my seat raised 2", and I can get used to it for sure. At least I can throw my leg over it and the balls of my feet can reach the ground, but not real comfy. I'm in town most of the time, and we have plenty of curbs for an easy on/off.
Rad Update. Well, I got the seat post a few days ago and got it on the Rad. It fits perfect, 27.2, but a bit higher than I was hoping. I could not even touch the ground with the balls of my feet, just the toes. I almost fell a few times on the first day out. The suspension seat worked pretty good though. I could feel the difference for sure. I took it off yesterday and put the old seat post back on. It was not worth a fall.

It should be here in two weeks. :)
