    Not saying they don’t cost more where you are but DeWALT 5Ah batteries are ridiculously expensive in the USA too. Certainly not “next to nothing.” If you did a search that gave you that impression you probably saw fakes.

    I just bought some brand new 5Ah DeWALT batteries and I could very clearly see a dielectric grease on the contacts before ever inserting them into a tool or charger. It stands to reason that people should try some fresh bulb grease before assuming there is anything wrong.

    Mixing high-current and normal cells might not give the result you're looking for. Tool batteries are usually low capacity but can deliver silly amounts of power (20-30C is common, so they'll deliver 40-60 amps), while laptop cells are higher capacity but can't deliver the amps.

    • @MyPlayHouse
      @MyPlayHouse  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Luckily the other old cells was old and beat up 🤕 with some luck, they can deliver the same now. But you are right.

      It would be fine for a dewalt light or something but yeah in a drill it would become unbalanced after the first screw😅 good video though that first battery was really in bad shape

      @@markhumannjr.5585 Replace all five / ten cells with new ones or find the same cells from a similar bad pack and cobble together one good pack. Note that Makita blows an electronic fuse somewhere when the pack goes bad, so you can't as easily repair those.

  • @a-aron2276
    @a-aron2276 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Looks like there's no BMS, meaning those other tabs are for the charger to see the cells, if you have one bad cell in both batteries, it may be worthwhile to get a new charger. Not for this case but just for someone else who may be watching. Whenever I see cells in this condition, it just proves to me how safe these Genuine cells are.

    • @MyPlayHouse
      @MyPlayHouse  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I believe the charger is the BMS, there was wires for that.

  • @einfelder8262
    @einfelder8262 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    These batteries are essentially "dumb". The charger regulates them while charging and the tool regulates them and prevents over discharge. Dewalt sells an adapter that enables these batteries to be used with the older tools, which can result in the batteries over-discharging, then will not charge because they are too low. Ask me how I know, haha. A quick tickle with a power supply will bring them back enough to re-enable charging on the charger.

    I opened a Dewalt battery to rebuild. The nickel strips are really thick and my spot welding machine could not weld them. But the wires going to each series of cells were very thin. The board is also too small. Strange arrangement. The bms is in the charger?

    • @MyPlayHouse
      @MyPlayHouse  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The thin wires are most likely the balancing from the BMS,, they mostly measure voltages,, they do not need to be thick.

    I wonder if the TH pin is for a thermal measurement, and the ID pin tells the charger that a battery is present and to what voltage to charge it to. I have no evidence of this, but it sounds good.

      Try Ohm/Resistance ground and TH. Depending which type I think it’s something between 2k and 11k ohms

    • @a-aron2276
      @a-aron2276 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Th is the thermistor, the ID pin is just that, it tells the charger that this is a 2-5ah battery. This is because some of the xr range of cells can take different amounts of current. It's the reason why a 2ah battery charges in the roughly the same amount of time as a 5ah battery (charger depending)

    To clean them up you can use some distilled water and submerge them, then brush it's best to separate the electronics as it's not a good idea to get chips wet while passing any electricity though them, but the cells are ok (though the electrolyte that's leaked can cause the water to be conductive so i wouldn't leave there for long), cleaning it on a tap should also be ok they're bad anyway XD, alternatively you can use mineral oil or even after you clean them up just use a brush and some mineral/motor oil and that will surely stop the corrosion or at least preserve the battery as is for a little longer. Oh and i'm not sure what electrolyte is used on these cells but some baking soda or some citric acid even can help depending on what it is :D but i would look up online for the composition of that particular cell that will stop further corrosion.

    Very interesting and informative video - I don't have the technical knowledge to understand all you said but I think I got my head around the basics so I can strip my batteries down and take some readings. I have 3 20v batteries for my Graco paint sprayer and they are all dead, or at least very, very ill. I try to charge them and it looks okay for a few minutes and then the green light stays on saying they are charged. Put them back in the gun and press the trigger and there is a few seconds of the pump working and that is it. I have not used the gun for two to three years and I know this is not good for lithium-ion batteries. Could you please tell me how I identify the batteries so that I can order some new one ? Many thanks. Just s a matter of interest the paint sprayer is about 6 years old and of course Graco have re-designed them and the new design uses DeWalt batteries. Replacements for mine where over 200 euros each !

      Usually a couple of cells will be dead. ( it happens on my LIPO too, ive notice)
      It's sort of a pain in the arss to resolder....I recycle , rebuild different packs for
      other usage....Mostly for Kiddie's toys, R/C, powerwheels...ect.
      I usually build 6s at 6600 mah...Try to keep all the good cell for best or good packs..I know I wont get 6600 mah out of them....but 1/2 hour of play time
      on powerwheels at 24V is plenty fun for the kids....
      I have 6 packs...i can run 6 powerwheels all at the same times.
      i can take all my grand kids (3-ea) on a 2-3 mile drive or to the park.
      1 hour drive time for each car.....I have multiple lithium r/c chargers.
      I can recharge all the batteries within 2-3 hours,,,
      Sometimes the kids drives there powerwheels 2-3 times p/day.lol
      The grand kids loves it..i get use powerwheels for only $50...
      Most of the time the acid batteries are missing...( I dont mind.lol)
      I have over 10 powerwheels....i rather save my lipo for my R/C..
      Powerwheels 12V batteries are $60.lol
      The Lion Batteries are FREE...i got from the contractor working on our house.
      He has better things to do than to save Lion batteries....Im retired.lol
      It's hit and miss ...some pack...only 1 cell drop below 2.2...
      Other times..the diaphram has to be reset...They'll simply come back up to
      3.6 once the connection is made again.
      other times 3-4 cells are dead.
      I usually try to recharge the cells...see which one will hold charge.
      i have couple of FAKE Imax chargers...they're STUPID,,
      It'll let me recharge at .3 volts.lmao
      My real Imax..is too damn smart to revive cells...hahaha
      Sometimes they'll charge back up..but lose charge ( So I just toss them out)
      I dont mix the C RATINGS or mah.
      You'll have to look up the part # on the cells...
      I also recycle laptops cells...they're only 10-15C..It's fine on the power wheels
      at 6s...not as fast as 30c......but it's still faster than 18V-20V.
      Definitely faster than 12V.lol
      My 5s 50c lipo has about the same power. Those batteries are expensive.

      Yes,, there is 5 cells of Li-ion 18650 inside and they go from about 3 - 4.2 volt,, so from 15 - 21volt
      the cells nominal voltages is 3,7volt and 5*3,7 is 18,5Volt witch is why we in EU buy a 18volt battery. The same battery in the US will say 20volt so that is probably what the battery shows fully charge.

      I got 2x R510s with 32GB of ram from a security company that wanted someone responsible to repurpose them (found them on marktplaats) here in the netherlands i paid 200 EUR for both, really good deal i think it's a good deal for your R710 specially if it's shipped, ram is cheap so. Make sure it's got all the bays drives and controllers though mine both had 12x 2TB SAS (24 drives total) and both power supplies only missing the rails.

    that first pack should just be disposed of. Batteries are in bad shape with none safely salvageable, and the battery case was not very pretty either. If your pack isn't more than 4-5 years old and hasn't seen really heavy use, then many times changing a bad cell is worth it, or possibly salvaging some good cells from them to use in other projects. A good money maker if you have a spot welder, is to purchase dewalt plastic casings, and add in your own salvaged cells. Refurbished packs can make you a decent amount of money but I would suggest selling locally to avoid costly shipping.

I have 6 batteries, 18-24 volt and each battery cost less than $15. Some under $10. Just goes to show you how being locked into an ecosystem costs.

    This video is totally insane. Don't be a cheapskate. It's better to buy a new battery pack than to replace your house when it burns down. These batteries are dangerous. You might succeed in getting the battery pack working again but the safety will be compromised.

      Keep in mind that the 18650 batts are offered with or without safety fuses the cost is the same for both so that leaves a little room for those that like to fiddle with things. The only draw back is that the Chinese cheapo ones sometimes pop the fuses but will work again if you remove the fuse.
