- In this episode, we will evaluate law 13 in the Sopranos by starting with one of the main problems with the Corinthians approach as show through Junior Soprano, before moving on to Vito, through whom the benefits and consequences of the law can be seen both in how he dealt with others and how his situation was handled once he was outed. Then we will be moving on to the one thing you should never do, as shown through David Scatino, and ending with a reversal of the law as shown through Tony and Finn

Finn was one of the smartest characters in the entire series. He was gracious to Tony for calling him out immediately for the disrespect, and he completely got away from anyone in that life the second he had to worry about Vito coming-up-from-behind. David Scatino did the opposite and lied when called out, then dug himself deeper into trouble. Reminiscing with Tony Soprano while owing him thousands of dollars seems like the gambling addict’s equivalent of searching out new injection sites after every vein in the arms has collapsed 😬
Vito laid the groundwork but how Meadow just put him in this room with Tony and the other through her gossiping and ignorance of his concerns was the real reason.
@@vlad_47 if Meadow hadn’t gossiped then Vito would have been able to just make Finn disappear.
@@hithere4719 She gossiped when that was already off the table because Vito was exposed.
At this point Vito should have made the 2 guys who spotted him disappear instead of worrying about Finn.

And then melted into mercury only for him to reappear on season 5 as Christopher's tourniquet in one of Tony's dream sequences... 😮

I don't believe people who discuss the past a lot are necessarily unpragmatic. Depending on how you look at it could be the more pragmatic thing if you can learn from it (or if say you believe gratitude is the most important virtue)

Let me tell you a couple o’three things. Another great analysis. Vito was up his own ass, pun-intended. Finn was always respectful, and carried himself well - he’s one of the few characters to make it through unscathed.

Yep thats a clear thing though. Even though Silvio is probably more open-minded than Tony even. He just knows.. now that Vito is (not out the closet but) out in the open as a homo - those who envied him now pretend to take insult at his sexuality- they just want to take his share of the cake - and possible chances at future promotion.
You also see what makes Tony and Sil the top guys though, they are the only ones who show their true thoughts about Vito - the rest just show contempt - except for Patsy, who ends up being one of the higher ups in the family.
That last line was one of my favorite endings to your videos, haha
Tony looked pretty good in the earlier seasons, slim(ish), well-groomed, nice dresser...then he got fat and sloppy. Was this also part of the character's evolution, do you think?
The actor was a real person. If Gandolfini had gotten really into fitness after season one they would’ve written that into the character. As it was they took the other route.
I remembering James Gandolfini saying in an interview somewhere that the weight gain was intentional in the last few seasons. He said something about how Tony's lumbering, threatening presence felt more authentic when he was just literally a bigger guy.
@@HistoryWithMrE Thanks, that's kind of what I thought. As Tony's mental health declined, and his life spun out of control, so did his weight and physical health---because so much of this show, story and character development seemed to be really well thought out and planned.
David Chase also wanted to Tony to slip more into his sociopathy… sociopaths generally take less better care of themselves.
In the first season he wasn't the boss so he was overall more active

This is why people frame requests as "asking a favor". Those familiar with the idiom inherently recognize a 'a favor' as a promise to make the effort worth it. If you come through for me on this, I *have* to make it up to you later or it'll severely hurt my social credit.
This is also the only way to make the past a practical concern. When you "call in a favor", you're challenging the other party's credit, and if they fail the challenge by stiffing you, their ability to ask not merely you but *anyone* who knows you for stuff on this basis is shot.

Tony was always trying to piss off junior for some stupid reason or other. Don't know why. If he would have just stayed with the jersey crew and not mess with NY crew things would have been different I believe

I wouldn't say Tony is being emotional or unpragmatic about Vito's homosexuality. Perceived image is just as important, if not more important, than money or usefulness. If Tony keeps Vito around after this revelation it makes him look dishonorable and weak. At this point in the series when tensions with the other families are high he cant afford to be perceived as being weak and dishonoring the rules; that's just giving the others ammo to justify going after him. Sil maybe right in noting the money Vito brings in and getting rid of him could jeopardize that. But at the end of the day some else could take over the role Vito had, and its Tony's reputation that is at risk for letting Vito slide, not Sil's.
Reputation is worth more than gold. You can always get back lost money. But lost reputation is far more difficult to regain.
