Leatherman Skeletool's MAJOR FLAW & How To Fix It!

  • The Leatherman Skeletool is a minimalist multitool that performs amazingly well as an everyday carry item. It’s small enough to slip into a pocket but has enough functionality that it can accomplish the majority of tasks you stumble upon throughout the day. ↘️↘️Click “SHOW MORE” below to open the full video description! ↙️↙️
    However, there is one drawback to the Skeletool and it has to do with the bits that Leatherman sends out with them. There are two driver bits, both double sided. One has two sizes of Phillips head, the other has two sizes of flat screwdrivers. The problem being that when you need to switch between Phillips and flathead you have to remove the bits and swap them out - tedious, time consuming, and you’re much more likely to drop one of the bits into the grass.
    Thankfully, Leatherman sells replacement bits that offer a Phillips on one side and a flathead on the other - that way all you have to do is flip it around! Easy peasy and it really takes an already impressive pocket tool and gives it the final touch to make it 100%.

      Hi Kiwi, I just purchased an add-on item called "Leatherman Skeletool Hammer/Jammer" I'd post a link here, but YT doesn't allow that. Not only does it have a small pry bar, but a hammer and a 1/4" slot for bits. Gander Flight, thank you for your suggestion, I've taken it up. I did replace the secondary bit in the handle with a Torx bit since I find I often need one. It's such a handy EDC tool.

    Seems like a great solution! pretty much everything is a #2 Philips so that would be the best one to have on there, then a flat head opposite that would be way more useful than a different Philips. Put the smaller philips in the handle for those rare occasions. I like where your heads at!

    Great video thanks, I’ve just got the skeletool as a present, I’ve had 2 wingman in the past and loved them. One thing I noticed straight away with the skeletool is the pliers head doesn’t naturally stay open like the wingman did. is this something that changes over time with use or is it closed and you need to awkwardly handle it to open and close it when your are using it? Big deciding factor for if I’m going to return for another wingman or not as I don’t have the time or the hands when I’m 10 foot up a ladder trying to loosen a stubborn nut on a lighting fixture .

    Cool video, up here in northern Canada at the hardware store I work at we have sold roughly half a dozen Skeletool tools and each one has had the dual bits in the package, so your bit problem seems odd to me. P.S. in the old days long before Covid we used to get the wave, surge and Skeletool with a loose ROBERTSON (or square) number 2 and 3 double sided bit loose in the box (I called leatherman and tried to order more and they said they didn’t know what I was talking about) a shame as square bits are super popular up here eh 🇨🇦.

    • @GanderFlight
      @GanderFlight  ปีที่แล้ว

      Have these sales been recently? Maybe they updated the packages? Hopefully? Very interesting that you got a few loose Robertson bits - that would be a very unique shape for a skeletool bit!

    • @IamACanadian47
      @IamACanadian47 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@GanderFlight when Leatherman released the free series with the grey coloured sheaths was when we STOPPED getting the spare double sided bit loose in the package with each tool, a real shame since at my hardware store almost every single screw we sell has a Robertson (or square) head and since no one at Leatherman customer support appears to know how they were made (and therefore I can’t order them as I was told they “don’t exist in our product catalog”) so I hold dearly onto the 3 I have as I use them many times daily to help customers and keep them preloaded in my wave or surge as we hardly ever use Phillips up here. I received the bits when I bought my regular skeletool, wave and surge over a period of roughly 5 years but like I said, when the grey sheaths and new Leatherman logo and packaging released, well that was the end unfortunately. Very long winded but I thought you should know.

    • @IamACanadian47
      @IamACanadian47 ปีที่แล้ว

      P.S. I just noticed your comment about unusual shape, if you look at a standard 24 piece (I believe) bit set you’ll notice one of the bits is a square number 1 and 2 bit (known as a piece of the Canadian bit set) but up here we use the number 2 and 3 and rarely the number 1 bit driver, so that is why the rare 2 and 3 bit is so useful eh.

    • @GanderFlight
      @GanderFlight  ปีที่แล้ว

      Not unusual shape as in the Robertson bit- but unusual as in the Robertson at the end of the flat bit shape required to be used in the skeletool

    • @IamACanadian47
      @IamACanadian47 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GanderFlight just like all of the other Leatherman bits appear to be “flat” it’s the same for this one except their shape was a very small square to begin with so the profile is as flat as your American Philips bits. As long as you don’t put a ton of torque on them I think it’s amazing you can have 24 bits in such a small package (I keep my bit set in the back of my sheath) and I have used at least half of the different bits to solve a variety of problems at the hardware store I work at.

    I snapped the knife on mine. I really think they should beef up the knife because it snapped where the giant thumb hole is. A knife has no business being that thin like it is in that spot, and having it thicker wouldn't add much weight. It was replaced under warranty no problem. My job often places me in the office for lunch, so being frugal, I often eat out of cans. I have the skeletool, and I know about the bits that are available and I have a few replacements, as for the warranty I had to use it on a different tool, which was shipped to me defective, never used, brand new but defective. Well the return process was difficult, I didn't like leatherman's request of proof requiring photographs or a video explaining my problem. At the time producing a video was not something I could do. So I sent them a letter and photographs, plus receipts. This was also an engraved item which I paid for under Leatherman's additional charges. Leatherman did not want to give me a refund or replace it, so they fought the whole thing. Their reason was that there is no refund or replacement for an engraved item even though it came defective upon shipping. They simply wouldn't do it, that is until I told them, that I am a collector of multi-tool and that I have a showcase which I sent them a picture of that has 20 of their products in my showcase, all of them brand new. And I threatened that if they didn't honor their warranty, I not only would never do business with them, but everybody I bring over to see my showcase and talk about multi-tools the subject of Leatherman's refusing to honor their warranty will undoubtedly come up. Due to this threat, leatherman replaced and engraved the tool, but of course I had to send back the defective multi tool so that they could evaluate my claim that it was their fault not mine, but no apology, just silence. All of this took a lot of time and patience. I nearly gave up more than once. That's my story, and it's 100% true, so don't trust leatherman to replace or repair your tool, especially if it's been engraved. Thanks for listening. Interesting video.

      @@GanderFlight In response, I would say since Leatherman would be receiving the tool in the process of the return, they need not put their customers through such an ordeal to provide prove with video evidence of the defect, because they could see it themselves when the Tool arrives. I own five Leatherman multitools. The skeletool is by far the worst one.
    You are right about the lack of being user friendly with regards to changing screwdriver bits. I demonstrated this as well in my review video.
    I showed the tool being used in various situations and went over many of the pros and cons.
    I got mine for $40.00 off the shelf. And, I feel this is overpriced for the quality and functionality of this tool.

    Yes of course that's kind of a no-brainer answer to that question they should definitely come with the Phillips and Flathead replacements. Just add saved by dollars to the price and then you get all three of these items in your kit and there's no having to wait or making a special order everything you have is in pocket and isn't that what it's supposed to be for? Good customer service and thinking about what a customer's needs are and providing those needs without charging the customer extra money really in the long run is the smartest thing to do for a business because if a product works and someone is happy with that product they are more than willing to say so and good publicity goes a long way the same with bad publicity. If a customer has a good review and tells his buddy about the excellent performance the quality and craftsmanship of a product plus the customer service and the forethought that to add certain little things such as the extra bits really goes a long way for the customer and not only will we say so to others about it but we are much more likely to maybe even buy another product just like this just to have as backup or in our backpack or whatever bag
