    The only reason I didn't test the i3 against the i5 7400 is because I don't have one. Plus, I wanted to get this video up close to launch ^_^ Let me know if you guys want to see the 7350K against the 7400 and I'll make it happen if there's enough interest.

    Doesn't quite make sense at $180 when it needs a huge overclock and an expensive Z board and an aftermarket cooler to compete with a locked i5 that can work with a stock cooler and a cheap motheroard and doesn't cost much more.

    Question: Why does intel keep making 2 core chips when they are obviously inferior? Is it really that much more expensive to make 4 core chips?

    • @tubadude45
      @tubadude45 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      peter poulsen a dual core cpu is just a quad core that has 2 cores that dont work. linus did a video about it

    • @jaturnley
      @jaturnley 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      The same reason they make a chip for every $10 increment - market segmentation. It's all about squeezing every last dollar out of the customer's pocket.
      The real question you should be asking is why do they disable hyperthreading on any of their chips. HT is just a trick they do with the instruction pipeline and the L2 cache - there's no reason it would ever not be able to be there on any of their main series chips.

    • @FM4AMGV
      @FM4AMGV 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      perhaps the hyperthreading bits are hit and miss on getting to work in manufacturing.

    • @jaturnley
      @jaturnley 7 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Mr. Milky Not true anymore; i3, i5 and i7 chips all are produced on different wafers since the core chips began production - the cost savings of getting more chips per wafer are greater than the loss of the few chips that don't pass muster. Chips that don't spec out become lower end versions of the same chip now, unlike the old days when they would laser off parts of the die. The do still do that for GPUs though.

      Okay then.. How about a i5 3570 (non k) for ~£80. It is only slightly worse than this i3 here. I really can't justify the ~£100 difference for slightly better single core performance. I'm personally all about value for money and it makes no sense why someone on a budget would but this instead of scrolling through ebay to find a used i5 for £100 less. My advice is buy used if on a budget.

      You do realise that ALL K-series processors come without a cooler?, you'd still need to get the same cooler (or better, given the heat given off by quad-core CPUs is typically more than dual-core ones)

      $170 + $60 is still just $230, cheaper than the i5 without a cooler at all, which means that there's some sense in getting the 7350K (which even on a low-profile air cooler, never reached any higher than 65 Celsius @ 4.8GHz)

    This test is missing something very important: minimun framerates, because the I3 7350K even at 5 GHz is bottlenecking the gpu (as we can see in the average results at GTA V) CPU usage is higher in the I3 and this does the minimun framerate, drop too much every time that got spikes in the cpu usage (sorry for poor english)

    Im running a 6600k currently and I think it's a Problem that it has only 4 cores. I built a system 7 years back with a 6 core Phenom II and it felt like a downgrade when I got the i5. Now hyperthreading simply doesnt do much in most situations. Even in the best scenarios for Hyperthreading it's only a 20% performance increase on average so it simply cant replace 2 more cores.

      John Same number of threads doesn't mean that it also has same number of cores. GTA V and rendering tests are enough for me. That is cpu power. And why would Intel make 60-70$ cheaper chip to perform same like the most powerful i5? I am not a billionaire but i just said that it is clickbait since i3 can't be i5 killer.

    • @zionlee1004
      @zionlee1004 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Who said i3s were i5 killer? If you have eyes use them. The video title clearly says "i5 killer?" with a question mark. Since the unlocked i3 is clocked higher than an i5, many would assume the i3 would yield similar performance to an i5. And this video answers those question. Hence the question mark at the end of the title of the video. If you have a brain, use it, else just donate it to somebody who can use it better. LOL

    If i get the i5 7600k, would it work on a "Z170 ASROCK FATAL1TY Gaming i7"? It's the same socket, LGA1151? though the mobo only says it supports 6th gen i7/i5/i3/pentium/celeron processor. Would it still work if it's a Z170 board with the same socket? I want to know before deciding on a i5 6600k/7600k. Thanks.

      But it says on their website currently, it would need a BIOS update for it, and the mobo i have doesn't have a bios thing for the kaby lake yet, for some reason, and i don't know how i can update it if it doesn't have the update, and if i just buy it, i cant put it in or the computer won't start with a different processor that needs new bios to run, so how do i do that? I don't want to buy a skylake processor just to update the bios for a kaby lake processor. How do i update my bios if the mobo doesn't have it yet (when the bios comes out eventually) when im using the processor that can't work without the bios update? I don't get it. If i get the 7600k and need a bios update, how can i update it if it doesn't start when i put it in and start it to update it?

    Frame time numbers are also something to pay attention to. Even if the average frame rates are similar, the dual-core hyperthreaded CPUs tends to have more problems running a consistent frame rate than 4-core CPUs, which translates into games not running as smoothly.

    The thing that really kills this i3 for me is that you need a pricy Z series chipset to even overclock a "budget" cpu. It would make most sense to me to buy something like a locked i5-7500 and pair it with an inexpensive motherboard. It would probably cost you less and in the end you would have a real quad core.

    When I built the PC I'm using now, I went with an FX-6350 simply because there were no unlocked Intel chips at that price without going a few generations back (and I was iffy about using used parts at the time). Obviously, I'd go with a locked Intel chip over anything AMD currently has on the market now, but this is good for competing with AMD at the lower end when AMD actually starts releasing new processors. Even if Ryzen can't compete at the i7 level, it should still be great for budget builders, and this will help Intel compete in that market.

    Man, the reason why the G3258 was so damn good was because it gave monster per core performance for $70. Stock cooler and just setting the multiplier you can easily reach 4.2-4.4ghz. But that's the problem, the 7350K is $180, that's A TON. That is the price of an i5 6500 at my local Micro Center!!!!! I'm a huge fan of having cheap dual core processors that overlock like nothing else (gives me nostalgia tbh). Key word: cheap. $70 is cheap, $180 just isn't. And Intel is really just being a blood sucker for having it "unlocked". Let's be honest, the i3 should've always been unlocked and this processor should be marketed to the $110-130 market at the most!!! I can't wait for Ryzen to come and at least drop all the CPU prices! WHO IS WITH ME?

    The i3-6100 for $120.00 overclocks to 4.6ghz on stock voltage. ASrock Z170 motherboard's still utilize the (sky oc) bios. Even the latest bios still enables non K over-clocking. For $120 oreven less for a used one, The i3 combined with a a GTX 1050 Ti would be a fantastic low power1080p gaming rig

    @LaxMan2k 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    when you were talking about deciding between the i5 6600k and the i3 you mentioned the potential price difference. You mentioned that the i3 goes for around $170 while it's i5 6600k counterpart goes for $250. I just built a new gaming rig with the i5 6600k and was able to go to my local MicroCenter and pick it up for $200 after tax while amazon had the same processor for $225 before tax. If spending an extra 50 dollars on a processor will break the budget wait a week or a month and shop around for a deal. Many times there will be bundle deals for instance MicroCenter gave $30 dollars off of a compatable motherboard with the i5 6600k. Just throwing it out there that it does pay to shop around and you might be able to get some good deals and not have to settle for something with less performance for almost the same price.
