I have been doing hair for 14 years and just now heard of zero gapping. I already do this...lol....but didn't know this was called that. I LOVE the baby brush idea!!! Never thought of that! We use clippers brushed provided to us at my shop and they are so thick and wirey, I hate using them because I feel like they dull my blades! Thank you so much for this video! Much appreciated!
I always wondered how barbers were always able to cut closer than any clippers I've ever purchased. The whole time it was something as simple as this. Thanks for the video!!
I forgot to like this earlier. My clippers actually work now! Before I'd have to trim with scissors then touch up without any blade guards. After zero gapping it instantly took off chunks with the 3/8". Thank you so much!
I gave myself a haircut last night. I have had my Wahl clippers for a few years so I took them apart and cleaned them after my last use. I did ASSUME that the blades should be flush when I put it back together. It stung quite a bit when I was cleaning up the hair on my neck an I instantly realized that my assumption was wrong. Only minor nicks on my neck BUT it literally took enough skin off that I have a new tan line. Wish I would have seen this video BEFORE!
Good info. My wife used my clippers on our huge 115lb fluffy dog. Dulled them to where they wouldn't cut. I was going to just buy some blades, but instead took the blades off, and laid some 400 grit sandpaper flat on a countertop. Laid the blades flat, and slid them up and down the paper about 20 times. I reassembled and oiled, and they just cut like new. A few minutes of work saved about $20. After that, I took one of my wife's fancy shoes, and played some fetch with the dog. :)
Hmmm, after years of personal use, I would say the most important #1 instruction is: One blade (The cutting blade) moves sideways and one blade is stationary. I call the large bottom blade (With the screws) the stationary blade. You must not allow the moving blade teeth to project beyond the stationary blade teeth or the moving blade will then cut your skin open and give you nasty surface sores--acting much like the teeth of a saw moving across a wood board. My biggest problem over time is--as said---when you tighten down one screw, this action causes the stationary blade to shift on the other side due to rotational forces caused by turning the screwdriver.
Pain in the backside when you can't get it back together. Your video helped me understand how it fits. Once you know and see how it fits it's rather easy.
Once you got the blades snug with the big top blade facing you just lightly push the blades down at a 30-40° angle on a level surface like a counter top etc and tighten the screws. The top blade will ever so slightly overlap the bottom blade.
Thank you for this video. I just replaced the dead NiCd batteries in my old Remington by NiMH batteries. While it was all apart I cleaned the whole thing. Adjusting and oiling the blades made them cut like brand new.
Really good video, I'm going to try this in the morning on my clippers. I can use these to "shave" my head. I find that a fake teeth brush work the best when cleaning your clippers. It has a small set of brushes on the back to reach all parts.
Wahls instructions manual booklet gives clear instructions on how to do a perfect alignment on the blades. Top blade's 1st left teeth should be aligned with the bottom's first big teeth. The first top blade's Right teeth should be aligned with the bottoms side wall of the blade that's before the bottoms 1st Right teeth. The top (smaller moving) blade should be 1mm apart below from the bottom adjustable blade.
Thanks for sharing the video. I've just bought one Wahl Cordless Super Taper, and replaced the screws from an old clipper i had. It's really easy and simple but it works!!!
This is a great tutorial. I've just turned 70 and decided to buy a Wahl Elite Pro home kit. While waiting for it to arrive it's nice to study all this info. Just a thought, isn't the fixed blade the one on the bottom and held in place by the screws, and the top blade the one that moves?
Thanks I’ve just acquired a new (to me, only used once) Wahl set and the other instructional videos I watched before yours weren’t this informative. No owners manual included in mine. I appreciate your sharing this. Now let’s see about getting rid of this hornets nest uni-dread covid hairdo that got entirely outta control lol . Wish me luck folks 😊
Sure seems like lot folks don't know about this. The difference between the two like us is we cut as well as maintenance are equipment. Here I am looking for a ol school sz set up when I am finding vids of maintaining equipment thx for this. Man
Great video. Maybe a daft question, but I thought if you zero gapped the cutters by making the tips of the top and bottom blades be in line with each other, made the cutters nick and cut, or is this only the case if you use the clippers with no guard?
Some time ago I had to change the head of out clippers. However, they have been cutting us every now & again ever since. After removing the blade, doing some cleaning, oiling, & putting it back together while looking at your video has helped. I tested it on my index finger to see if it would cut my skin & it didn't. Thanks for the video! Query: Do I need a specific type of oil for the blade or can olive oil work in the long run?
Mine came with Wahl Clipper Corp ‘Blade Oil’ says made in Vietnam. Hopefully you won’t have to go there to source it directly. I imagine most if not all blade oils are quite similar.
So this way you can get that zero line out with no problem right? Im having a problem with that zero line! Should I start a skin fade with this or just to get them lines out! I use my Andis Master to blend but to get them stubborn lines out, it's a real challenge! What you recommend?
I have the Wahl Magic clip and the Andis Master! The Wahl has the surgical blade and zero gap! The Masters are zero gap as well but has the regular blade and the cutting blade is from the fade blade! I really like using the Masters but those Wahl really get them lines out when you gap them....Thanks for the videos bro...keep them coming!
does the left tooth of the cutting blade have to be in line with the top blade, so it has like a little gap to the left, and is uneven because the cutting blade is more to the right? Or just make it flush even on each side?
Awesome video Ricardo very informative.. can you make a video doing/explaining the clipper over comb technique?.. the way you explain everything makes it very easy for one to approach a haircut. Let me know , thanks in advance.
Probably, the most important of the blade to be oiled, besides the teeth, would be between the blades to prevent friction between the front and back blades. Your comment deserves a thumb down. I suppose next you will be telling people not to place oil in their cars to oil their cars' engine bearings. - What do you tell them when the engine seizes up and stops working?
Being a professional barber do you sharpen the blades yourself? Or do you just order new blades when they go dull? Does moving it flat across a honing stone really work? Do you have to sharpen the inside edges of each tooth?
I wanted answers to how to sharpen blades, too, but what I shall do ask the question within TH-cam how to sharpen clippers' blades? I shall also ask Google Chrome the same question also and select < Video >.
the quality of the closeups especially of the teeth is dreadful because the gaps between the teeth are blurred and out of focus. I can't usually see the gap between the top and bottom blades.
whats good ricardo, can I zero gap the cordless version of the seniors the same way?? I just ordered a slimline too with the blade adjuster, do they hit when u zero gap them? good look
Hey,i had a question ,i bought a Wahls recently and it doesn't work very well,Ive always had this brand and my last one would make you bald in 5 seconds and i loved it, when i bought this new one its like it wasn't even cutting,i was able to shave my head eventually but not very good, so i started playing with the blade settings and that didn't help but i also probably wasn't doing it right,i noticed when the arm was all the way down (closest cut) the blades weren't really moving?? then when i would move the arm upwards they would but of course you dont get a close cut that way, maybe it needs a whole bunch of oil? maybe it just needs breaking in? i remember when i bought the one before this one it was perfect out of the box, cutting fool for sure, any ideas? thank you much for your time and the video!!
Thanks for making this amazing tutorial Richardo! It helped me a lot trying to zero gap my Wahl Icon :D, and just started going through the Barber Game right now at 13. Keep up the good work man! Btw man can you please make a video Tutorial on how to do a Fauxhawk fade using Wahl Clippers? Thanks if you will :)
Ricardo The Barber Ricardo : Bro, I Have A Stupid Question... What Is " Zero Gapping " ? ? ? I See That All The Professionals, Like You, Do That... Thanks ! ! !
Ricardo The Barber Hey, Thanks, Bro ! ! ! I've Watched This Video Numerous Times & Read All Comments... You're A Good Teacher, And Know How To Explain Things Diligently And Have Patience.... I'm DEFINITELY Recommending You To Anyone That Needs Sound Advice... PEACE
I don't have the Wahl brand of oil, so, I lubricate the 2 blades with a few drops of 'Johnsons baby oil'... it's a colourless 'light' mineral oil and it at least seems to do the job. One question, how do you align the blades 'from left to right...'
Ive been cutting for a couple months, my barber and i both own magic clips and they arent zeroed gaps, they are failrly close to it , should i zero gap mine ? I usually take out a line with my andis slim lines if the line doesnt come out but usually it does just with the magic clipz.
ArcanePath360 Y‘all never hat one of these things in your hand, right? Did show and tell everything for somebody who knew where to look and what he was telling about. And at least I thank him for showing me!
If you turn up the volume on your speakers you can hear a difference. I've got special speakers attached to my computer and can indeed hear a difference after he's applied the cooling agent plus oil.
Is it a bad idea to zero gap the Wahl Magic Clip clippers? They have the fade blade with short and long teeth on the botton blade. I don't want to have any issues when cutting hair.
VERY NICE EXPLANATION MAN. THANK YOU. BEST ONE SO FAR. Quick question by the way, do you use any cordless hair trimmer ? if so any preference and why ? thx again
Nice video man. I have a pair of wahl seniors myself I'm learning how to cut hair and I decided to get the wahl seniors . I was wondering why my clippers have the washers on the top blade where the screws go in. Is that for people not to zero gapping them. I tried zero gapping them but had no luck . Any suggestion or tips ?
hola hermano te digo que te admiro mucho soy peluquero y aprendo mucho de tus videos mil gracias por ser tan generoso ojala entiendas español feliz año que DIOS te bendiga ati y familia
im a home user i dont need a chargebole machine i am bold so all i have is very littel hair from the sides and from the back (cllasic bold)1 all i want is a machin that will cut my hair softly and will not stuck what wahl model do you reccomend for me to buy ?
Yoo bro I have a question that maybe be a bit random but... what would you say is the best machine to line up your beard? Like what gives the neatest finish, as I'm thinking about getting a pair of t trimmers because they cut real low and I don't necccasrily want to use a "Razor" to sharpen the detail... so basically I want to just use a trimmer that would give a detailed finish, what would you suggest bro?
ExpectBass YEah I just brought the detailer yesterday. Was worried at first b ut they are sharp and cut great. They even come with a little plastic tool to help you zero gap them. When the blades get dull ill be getting the t-wide blades just to make it a little easier, but even the stock blades will do the job.
say man i was gna check these clippers out after using the masters for the last 4yrs, do they cut shorter than the masters when open? would you know what detachable blade is equivalent? thnx again for your videos and help man
+Benjamin Jones Yes they cut shorter by a little bit. I dont have the exact detachable that matches but its probably a oa since thats right under the 1 detachable.
if i do this to my wahl clippers it wiil give me a zero overlap so there would be no point in buying the wahl balding clippers ? plus it will give the benefit of adjusting the blade up and down from zero ? correct ?
The thickness of the set blade will still be thinner on the balding clippers. So if you zero gap the adjustable clippers, they still don't cut quite as close as the balding blade
I think that Wahl's officially says without combs 0.25 mm instead of zero because there must be a tiny gap between both blades' teeth. - In this video it also states that there should be a small gap when the blades or lever is closed because either you will damage the blade, cut yourself, nik yourself, or also place scars on your face.
i got another question for you. i been noticing another problem on the masters i had 2 chrome masters an they felt smooth you couldnt feel a thing and i had 2 regular black masters not the limited ones but the regular black master i compare them with the chrome master an they are alittle bit loud i want to know what can i do to fix them
hey Ric, I just purchased a new Wahl Senior (grey) and they are loud. I've oiled and adjusted the blade however, they are still a bit loud. Any tips would be great. Thank you.
Good video. Question, are the clippers in your video consideted Wahl's best? Thinking about getting some clippers for the home, what do you think of the Elite Pro ($49.99)?
Ricardo The Barber But I will not be using the clippers commercially. They will be for home use only but I want a decent clipper. What would you recommend for the home?
Wahl doesnt make masters. Im a full time barber and i know somebody will clown me for this, but i love the elite pro. I use it in the shop pretty often. True, not designed for commercial use, but they will hold up pretty well. Ive been using the same one for over a year, at least one or two Hours a day total. Initially i only got them for the guards they came with, but i had to use them for like two days straight when my seniors broke. Good clipper.
I've been cutting my hair for awhile now, but want to go from a fade to a skin fade. I use my clippers from Walmart and a razor, but I can't get rid of the line between the razor and lowest setting. Would a Wahl Professional 5-Star Balding Clipper #8110 help get the line out or should I get an entirely new Wahl clipper set and just do the zero gap that you showed in this video?
Hello my dear barber,I"m working for putting my barber shop in Dominican Republic, I was buying two wahl senior v9000 and c-15 (the year) I put away the cover and I saw that the arm is different now, now is continuous it doesn't have the traditional space than in the past,do you know why now they do wahl senior like this?
Hey there, I've got a Wahl 300 series, and after a while of using it, the clipper gets extremely hot, is that normal to the point I can not hold it? Cheers! Love your work!
Great vid, question I myself am starting to thin out a little up top overall. The last 2 years I been getting the top trimmed 3 times a yr with scissors. Will it damage my hair if I get a #2 or 3 up top with clippers constantly zipping on my head?? Side note I have your type of hair from what it looks like. Thanks, may be dumb question but who knows lol.
Id keep it long because once you go shorter it will looks real bad. Im only saying this because you say you kind of have my hair and this is what happens to me lol
Thanks will keep it long and do the trims 3 times a yr like Im used to. Its hilarious how my sides grow so fast and I end up having that Bozo the clown look if not cut for over a month. Blowout & burst fade are my 2 cuts I usually roll with. Thanks again!!
My ajuster leaver wont screw back on so when it all togever the screw is loose nd the bits fling off. Do i need a new screw due to oil maby rounding it off
I use my Masters a lot, but looking to getting a Wahl clipper to use on the side, which do you reccomend? Was thinking either these, the sterling reflections or the magic clip?
Hey man, did this with my Wahl Elite Pro's and the clippers are making all kinds of noise, and when I do get them a little lower (than what you've shown here) the blade stops moving. I've done this right as I've Zero Gapped my other few Wahl's, but wondering what I could do to stop this? I've returned the first set thinking it was just a weird issue, but now I know it isn't with the second pair as it's done the same thing.
I have been doing hair for 14 years and just now heard of zero gapping. I already do this...lol....but didn't know this was called that. I LOVE the baby brush idea!!! Never thought of that! I thought zero gap was this entire complicated process, never knew it was such a simple task. Thanks man, great video.
I always wondered how barbers were always able to cut closer than any clippers I've ever purchased. The whole time it was something as simple as this.
Thanks for the video!!
Mark Robertson yea I bought some clips and it doesn’t come out how a barber does it

Thank you for this video. I just replaced the dead NiCd batteries in my old Remington by NiMH batteries. While it was all apart I cleaned the whole thing. Adjusting and oiling the blades made them cut like brand new.
Thank you. I just bought a clipper Wahl classic serie icon. Now I know how to make a zero gap
Really good video, I'm going to try this in the morning on my clippers. I can use these to "shave" my head. I find that a fake teeth brush work the best when cleaning your clippers. It has a small set of brushes on the back to reach all parts.

How are you at it now? Fire I hope.

Thank you will do
Good day Sir, what kind of oil do you use in your clpper?
Worked great! I use the wahl balding clipper. The curved blade was throwing me off but got it squared and zeroed
Okay - I think I got that wrong, I'm still learning.

An old soft toothbrush works great for brushing out accumulated hair inside clippers. Don't need to buy anything special.
I would just use one of my shaver's brushes. the brush in the video appears to be overkill far too big.
Some time ago I had to change the head of out clippers. However, they have been cutting us every now & again ever since. After removing the blade, doing some cleaning, oiling, & putting it back together while looking at your video has helped.

Stupid question, is it ok to use motorcycle chainoil to oil a clipper?
Thank you bro, you really know what your doing man. "I appreciate you".
Good video, can I zero gap Wahl pro clip clippers?
So this way you can get that zero line out with no problem right? Im having a problem with that zero line! Should I start a skin fade with this or just to get them lines out! I use my Andis Master to blend but to get them stubborn lines out, it's a real challenge! What you recommend?

I have the Wahl Magic clip and the Andis Master! The Wahl has the surgical blade and zero gap! The Masters are zero gap as well but has the regular blade and the cutting blade is from the fade blade! does the left tooth of the cutting blade have to be in line with the top blade, so it has like a little gap to the left, and is uneven because the cutting blade is more to the right? Or just make it flush even on each side?
So after zero gapping, fully closed would be a 0 and fully open would be a 1/2?
is this the same as the wahl designer? are they basically the same clipper?
Great video. Is there a way to remove minor rust spots from the blades?
Which model Wahl clippers is that? It looks super high quality!
Awesome video Ricardo very informative.. can you make a video doing/explaining the clipper over comb technique?.. the way you explain everything makes it very easy for one to approach a haircut. Let me know , thanks in advance.

Great video, and great quality of video. If you don't mind asking what camera / camera lens did you use to make this tutorial video?
This is shot with a canon 6d and a 50mm1.8 lens

You do not have to take the blade off to oil them.Just put a few daps on the back and sides of the blade then turn it on and move the arm up and down
Probably, the most important of the blade to be oiled, besides the teeth, would be between the blades to prevent friction between the front and back blades.
Your comment deserves a thumb down.

Hi Ricardo how about the detailer zero gaping, I waited for that, thx in advance.
I prefer the sterling reflections senior clipper. Also I would place some oil in the actual cutting blade a few times a day.
Thanks. What camera did you use to record this? It's nice quality
the quality of the closeups especially of the teeth is dreadful because the gaps between the teeth are blurred and out of focus. I can't usually see the gap between the top and bottom blades.

Get it as close as you can with out putting the blades flush or accidentally overlapping them.
you can use air duster can the stuff is for key boards .
Hey Ricardo...what are your thoughts on the Wahl legends...
great walkthrough !!
I wouls just change to the wahl designer blade and use that given you get the wide screws that come with them. Then you can zero gap no problem
I will try that. Thank you.
I have wahl seniors that have three screws in the blade. You have two. Should I switch? Does it make a difference?
Having three screws should be better than having two screws in theory.
Screw the outer two screws first, and screw the middle screw last.
can anyone tell me what is the benefit of this?
i bought a wahl clipper today..it works fine
sadman hossain you get a shorter cut by zero gapping any clippers almost a shave cut
Makes your trimmers a sharper to blade zero balding ratio
press the blade on a glass then tighten the screw it works you could angle the blade on the glass as well...
hola hermano te digo que te admiro mucho soy peluquero y aprendo mucho de tus videos mil gracias por ser tan generoso ojala entiendas español feliz año que DIOS te bendiga ati y familia
I used google translate lol. Thank you for watching and im glad to help out. Enjoy the new year.
im a home user
i dont need a chargebole machine
i am bold so all i have is very littel hair from the sides and from the back (cllasic bold)1
all i want is a machin that will cut my hair softly and will not stuck
what wahl model do you reccomend for me to buy ?
Mine has to spring prongs that extend upright and need to be compressed by the movable blade, Is this normal?
Yoo bro I have a question that maybe be a bit random but... what would you say is the best machine to line up your beard? Like what gives the neatest finish, as I'm thinking about getting a pair of t trimmers because they cut real low and I don't necccasrily want to use a "Razor" to sharpen the detail... so basically I want to just use a trimmer that would give a detailed finish, what would you suggest bro?
ExpectBass Wahl detailers with a wide blade on it.
The "wide t blade" that already come with the wahl detailers right? Thanks for the reply back btw :)
No its a seperate one thats a little bit wider but its cutting are is thinner making it cut better.
would you be able to link me to the "wide blade" that your talking about? :)
ExpectBass YEah I just brought the detailer yesterday. Was worried at first b ut they are sharp and cut great. They even come with a little plastic tool to help you zero gap them. When the blades get dull ill be getting the t-wide blades just to make it a little easier, but even the stock blades will do the job.
i just bought a baby brush today and youre right works great thanks!
say man i was gna check these clippers out after using the masters for the last 4yrs, do they cut shorter than the masters when open? would you know what detachable blade is equivalent? thnx again for your videos and help man
+Benjamin Jones Yes they cut shorter by a little bit. I dont have the exact detachable that matches but its probably a oa since thats right under the 1 detachable.
+Ricardo The Barber thnx man yeah i figured the 0A or 1 since the masters blend to the 1A, stay up man
Are the seniors and andis master a good set of clippers to start my journey to become a barber?
Me too bro
if i do this to my wahl clippers it wiil give me a zero overlap so there would be no point in buying the wahl balding clippers ? plus it will give the benefit of adjusting the blade up and down from zero ? correct ?
Correct man.
The thickness of the set blade will still be thinner on the balding clippers. So if you zero gap the adjustable clippers, they still don't cut quite as close as the balding blade
When masters are zero gapped should they be eating the guards when closed?
They will yes just dont close all the way
I think that Wahl's officially says without combs 0.25 mm instead of zero because there must be a tiny gap between both blades' teeth.
Thank you.
Adjust the plastic screw on the side of the clippers to stop the sound
Good video. Question, are the clippers in your video consideted Wahl's best? Thinking about getting some clippers for the home, what do you think of the Elite Pro ($49.99)?
No these are not the best.is consider wahl masters if your going to use wahl. Do not get the elite pro that's not for commercial use
Ricardo The Barber But I will not be using the clippers commercially. They will be for home use only but I want a decent clipper. What would you recommend for the home?
Yes then the elites are a good choice.
Wahl doesnt make masters. Im a full time barber and i know somebody will clown me for this, but i love the elite pro. I use it in the shop pretty often. True, not designed for commercial use, but they will hold up pretty well. Ive been using the same one for over a year, at least one or two
Hours a day total. Initially i only got them for the guards they came with, but i had to use them for like two days straight when my seniors broke. Good clipper.
try wahl 5star legend, its best clipper l've ever had, plus l got with premium metal guards, and also upgraded (wegde) are simply stunning
Awsome video mate, may I ask what that "Jeris" bottle is for?
+Emiliano Morado its hair tonic used to clean off the skin after a haircut
Ricardo The Barber oh ok thanks
I've been cutting my hair for awhile now, but want to go from a fade to a skin fade. I use my clippers from Walmart and a razor, but I can't get rid of the line between the razor and lowest setting. Would a Wahl Professional 5-Star Balding Clipper #8110 help get the line out or should I get an entirely new Wahl clipper set and just do the zero gap that you showed in this video?
Hi. Good video.
My question is why they mark and cut my skin ???? Advice please. Thanks
top blade is set back too much. Need to pull forward more
Hello my dear barber,I"m working for putting my barber shop in Dominican Republic,
I was buying two wahl senior v9000 and c-15 (the year) I put away the cover and I saw that the arm is different now, now is continuous it doesn't have the traditional space than in the past,do you know why now they do wahl senior like this?
RAYMONDROCKSTAR Maybe you had a v5000 in the past. Just a guess
yes true
damn!...how hard is it to use a pencil to point out what your talking about when describing the blade gaps?
Hey there, I've got a Wahl 300 series, and after a while of using it, the clipper gets extremely hot, is that normal to the point I can not hold it?
Cheers! Love your work!
A good pair of clippers should not get hot to the point where you can't hold it.
Ricardo The Barber
Thank's, I'll return it then. :)
Thanks mate you really demonstrate professional
You need to be setting the gap and right to left setting at the same time... Otherwise the blades won't criss cross each other and 2ont cut hair.
Horizontal adjustment of the blades needs to be performed also.
Hey. Bro where can I buy that machin?
My ajuster leaver wont screw back on so when it all togever the screw is loose nd the bits fling off. Do i need a new screw due to oil maby rounding it off
I use my Masters a lot, but looking to getting a Wahl clipper to use on the side, which do you reccomend? Was thinking either these, the sterling reflections or the magic clip?
Sterling reflections over the magic clip. Or a pair of 5 star seniors is good too
i use rem oil works awesome
Will u detail about side button??
Hey man, did this with my Wahl Elite Pro's and the clippers are making all kinds of noise, and when I do get them a little lower (than what you've shown here) the blade stops moving. I've done this right as I've Zero Gapped my other few Wahl's, but wondering what I could do to stop this? I've returned the first set thinking it was just a weird issue, but now I know it isn't with the second pair as it's done the same thing.
