D&D Starter Set Unpainted Miniatures: Dragons of Stormwreck Isle

- Learn how to paint at a beginner level from a true beginner setting up the ultimate beginner adventure! The last piece to complete our quest to Stormwreck Isle has us paint the remaining 3D miniatures that are featured in this epic introductory adventure.
Join me on this tutorial as I show you how to paint some of Dragons of Stormwreck Isle’s featured miniatures: the Giant Octopus (Spore Servant Octopus), Bronze Dragon Wyrmling and the main villain 'Sparkrender', the Blue Dragon Wyrmling to level up our experience with the new D&D Starter Set!

Right on! The only thing I might’ve done a little different when painting it is dry brush a subtle light blue in some areas (even though there isn’t fungus on the actual mini, but their picture of it has the highlight). I’m going to hit mine up with some Glow In the Dark paint from Golden Acrylics & maybe some pinks and purples.

I purchased the same octopus and bronze wyrmling. I got the blue wyrmling from the game store pre-painted. I bought the kobold warband set so I would not have to paint the kobolds. There is a an Adult Myconid pack of 2 so I got 3 and then there is a pack with the sovereign that has two young myconids got 2 packs. The owlbear 3D printed. Bought a pre-painted Harpy. The zombies and ghoul got from a set of minis my son-in-law bought from Origin Miniatures. The striges I crafted out of plastic plant pieces suspended them on clear coated wire used to hold toys in the packaging. I have not worked out how I am going to put the cavern together yet. Not sure if I am going to buy the Wizkids cavern sets, 3 D print or craft something. I'll save mentioning the other elements I have completed that are inline with your continuation videos.
That’s so awesome that you were able to secure the other minis for the adventure! Even cooler how you were able to make your stirges work. I totally get it and want the same experience by having every mini in the adventure. The only ones I do not have are the Adult Myconids…but I am using other minis from the Warlock Tiles Mushrooms & Pools set to represent. As well, there is a Fire Snake I need to get eventually (which is only available prepainted in a booster box) and some fume drakes that currently don’t exist. Other than that I’m good to go! That’s where that 3D printer would come in handy to complete the remaining minis!! When it comes to the caverns, I am excited to show you how I was able to replicate the map provided using 4 boxes of Cavern Tiles. The goal is to have the video up in 2 weeks if all goes well 🤞🏻
@@darliniansdungeon One of the game stores in my area opens the booster box sets limitedly of course and sell the minis individually. I was able to get the fire snake. Its hard getting the most sought after ones, but since I mostly go after the everyday creatures can pick up some pre-painted standard creatures. I personally do not enjoy long hours of painting minis, and if I am painting would prefer to paint terrain. Yep the fume drakes I have not figured out yet only missing them and the unarmed kobolds for the cloister. Thought about buying another kobold warband and removing the weapons, but hesitant due the cost.
@@friedrichhack1407 That is so cool you were able to get the Fire Snake!! I always go for prepainted first too…and then get any unpainted to complete my adventure. I actually only started painting miniatures because of the original Starter Set Lost Mine of Phandelver coupled with the Essentials Kit: Dragon of Icespire Peak (before 2D minis were released). I had to have every NPC and creature for that adventure…so that was my catalyst to learn to paint. It was worth it as that adventure is incredible and I can’t wait to share! I didn’t expect to actually love painting minis as I had never painted model cars or anything before. I think I ended up painting over 100 minis (terrain pieces included) for that adventure. After this new Starter Set, I will be doing the original Starter Set with every map replicated using the Warlock Tile system. That’s actually what was my original project (to make this channel), but the new Starter Set just came out and I had to demonstrate how cool it would be to replicate it!
@@darliniansdungeon That is cool - I will follow you on that. I have purchased the Lost mines and the Dragons of Icespire Peaks as well. I DM'd some one-shots and Goblin Arrows then the Stormwreck Isles released. Put Phandelver on hold as Stormwreck is a better starting adventure for new players. I started the adventure in Leilon played two basic encounter sessions in the town getting them ready. Played two session on the ship in route to Stormwreck Isle which they are currently at the cloister. Thanksgiving weekend we are going to go to the Myconids cavern.

The next time I buy a similar mini to these here, I’m going to try and prime over it.
Cool cool, I totally find it helps (at least with those paints I used). I’ll be reviewing the new Prismatic Paint sets coming soon as I hear it’s a much better paint all together than The Army Painter…can’t wait to use them see how much better they are!✌🏻

I really love the look of those washes 🤩 Do they come in a set? If so, how many colours?
They really do add a lot to the minis! The ones I purchased are by ‘The Army Painter’ Warpaints Quickshades set that comes with 11 washes for about $50 CAD. I highly recommend it👌🏻
hey could you do what you've been doing with this starter set and do it with the other one lost mines of phandelver, getting all the minis and terrain for that maybe the same for the essentials kit one dragon of icepire peak of one of the bigger campaigns out of the abyss or dungeon of the mad mage.
That’s so awesome to hear 😎!! I literally made the channel to feature the original Starter Set (LMOP) and the Essentials Kit (Dragons of Icespire Peak) combined using the Warlock Tile system. I already have all the minis, terrain and have played through the adventure these last 2 years. I only featured the latest Starter Set because it was just released and knew it is currently trending. Right after this Starter Set (early next year) this is my next BIG project!! I hope you’re able to watch my Dragons of Stormwreck Isle adventure unfold in the next few days…my party had a play through last month and I ended up making the adventure into a movie using my minis, terrain and Syrinscape✌🏻

i have to ask what issue you have had painting directly? all of the minis from that brand i have painted i did not prime first and i haven't noticed any issues, im just curious what you ran into
Very cool, I’m glad to hear! When I was learning about painting minis 2 years ago, many channels had recommended priming them for yourself. I didn’t at first, but then when I did prime it…it does seem to tack on better. When I apply thin paint directly onto the unboxed mini, it didn’t catch the same way (seemed to roll off more than when I primed it). Also, if it’s not primed I have had some minis flake off some paint over time. I haven’t had that issue since priming and varnishing. I actually failed to show you guys how to varnish afterwards to protect from dust and fingerprints…next time. I hope that answers your question and thanks for watching ✌🏻
I rly don’t like the blue dragon wrymling mini (it’s one of the harder minis to paint and doesn’t look very good) so I ended up just getting the young blue dragon, it also seems like a much better final boss for the adventure
@Derekyouan Fair enough! 😀 Just as long as your party isn’t actually fighting the Young Dragon stats (wyrmling stat block is ideal for beginners)…it should be a blast! 🐲 I recommend when using that size of a monster (Large), please allow the Observatory in Chapter 4 some more room as it’s a very small space for Sparkrender to sleep and the party to do battle 😎 Also, (if you’re interested) please check out how my party handled this adventure in my Miniature Movie✌️😀

I've been painting for a few years and decided to try the D&D paints. I really wanted to like them, but they are easily the worst mini paints I've ever used. Try another brand like Vallejo or ProAcryl and you'll be surprised how much nicer your minis turn out.

Phew 😅
@@darliniansdungeon Right on. There are a lot of good paints out there. It's a huge shame that the official D&D branded ones are so sub par. D&D is a huge brand right now and could bring a lot of people into the painting hobby and for D&D fans to be served paints that they will have to fight against to produce a decent paint job kinda breaks my heart. So much wasted potential.

bruh Aidron is so much bigger than Sparkrender, how did that wimp loose?
Interesting…were you thinking Runara, the Adult Bronze Dragon? I’m only asking because of the stat blocks I’m seeing for both Sparkrender and Aidron are medium sized. Sparkrender has 20 more Hit points than Aidron, and has a Challenge Rating of 3 where Aidron is 2. Runara…the adult Bronze Dragon would definitely wipe the floor with both of them! If I’m missing something, please let me know! I hope you stick around to see the adventure unfold very soon using my Warlock Tile system!✌🏻Unless you meant the side by side size comparison at the end of my video…Aidron does look bigger lol 😆

Female dragon?
Hmmm…I was just double-checking the manual for Dragons of Stormwreck Isle (Blue Dragon wyrmling named Sparkrender) and found that it references ‘his’ ancestors from the past. It doesn’t outright say Sparkrender is a male, just that his ancestors were at the same location. Hope that helps and thanks for watching 🐲
@@darliniansdungeon ya sounds like male if it said his. But then again not surprised cause when have you ever encountered a innocent female dragon? Usually, its males since they love to try and prove themselves because they are young and not smart enough to know not to mess with them.
Eh…I would’ve just purchased a Toy Octopus for the group to fight against. They got plenty of differently sized ones just about everywhere you look.
To each there own, as long as they’re using minis (and the mini is not proportionally out of scale lol) I’m happy!✌🏻😎
